By the time the band come on the Astoria was crammed to bursting with long-haired fans of all ages, all bobbing up and down trying to catch a glimpse of the spectacle above the shoulders of those in front of them. From our cramped spot on the balcony (like nine llamas in an Austen Allegro), the crowd looked like cells multiplying under a microscope: growing, teeming and jiggling about to the best of their abilities considering the limited space.
The Children’s masterful frontman, Alexi Laiho may only be five foot nothing but he can still growl lyrics like, “I’m in chains of bestial rageâ€?, with all the menace of someone twice his size.
Such a great show. I took a mate who isn’t into metal, and rarely goes to gigs, and he was transfixed. That’s a sign. Amazing.
