Alex’s weekly punk blog (now with added hotlinks): Turning rebellion into dollies

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

They’re a bunch of silly sods all these new US punk bands, eh? Still, those American kids need to spend their hard-earned allowances on something and what better way to spend it than on dolls of their favourite band? But you’d expect that from MCR, wouldn’t you? But Danzig? Not one, but three? But punk merch doesn’t end with the living. No siree. There’s more. Much more.
Can things get any worse? We’re still waiting for the poseable Henry Rollins Action Man but yes, things could get worse. Much worse.

Conflict’s two-volume live double DVDs turned up this morning, titled respectively ‘Conflict In London’ and ‘Conflict In England’. Out now on the “newly relaunched” Mortarhate. We have’t had time to watch them yet but they smell nice.
Bad Brains have got a new DVD out on Weinerworld this week. Shot at the height of their career at CBGBs in 1982, it’s a raw DIY punk rock production but that’s because they were a raw DIY punk rock band. If you live in the USA you can go and see American Hardcore at the flicks this week. It’s a Sony Pictures documentary on the US unmderground punk scene 1980-1986 and adapted from the book by Steven Blush of the same name. Made in a similar style to Dogtown & Z-Boys, it features much footage from the era and interviews with usual suspects Keith Morris, Ian MacKaye and Henry Rollins etc. Watch the trailer here. Sony have no plans for a UK cinema or DVD release as yet but a compilation soundtrack CD is released by Rhino On Oct 9th.
That’s about it. The new album from the fearsome and mighty Send More Paramedics, ‘The Awakening’ came out this week on In At The Deep End Records but of course you should have already bought that by now.

Katie: The new Radio One Rock Show

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

Yep, another post from me. And yes - we are busy in the office - I just love communicating on the world wide web.  :)

Anyhoo, this is a blog about the new BBC Radio One Rock Show. I have been working on the show for about 18 months now, doing little reports with bands on the road, and interviews with kids etc, and was working with mainman Mike Davies. Well, the Rock Show now has a new main presenter: the lovely Daniel P Carter (the bassist from ‘A’ and from The Lucky Nine). I will still be doing my stuff too, so tune in and listen to the two of us talk rubbish together. The show will now be on Monday nights on Radio One, from midnight till 2am. You can hear this week’s show online at the Rock Show Website, 24/7 through their clever streaming player. You should also go check out the Rock Show Myspace page.

That’s it really.

Over and out.

Katie: Breed 77 at The Underworld

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

Hey everyone,

I went along to the Underworld in London last night to check out Breed 77. They were totally amazing! I think that they are one of those bands that no one thinks of as very ‘cool’, but have steadily worked their way up from the UK underground - and transformed themselves into really good performers and songwriters. Their new album ‘In My Blood’ is out now, and definitely worth checking out. There’s even a kind of Kelly Clarkson ballad on there (not metal really, but still pretty awesome). Check out their Myspace here.

Bye!

Katie: Rock club at the Mean Fiddler, London.

Monday, September 25th, 2006

Howdy all,

So… on Friday night I went out dancing with about 30 pals to the Rock club night in London at the Mean Fiddler. It was so much fun, and - even though I was just drinking water - i was able to stay dancing and prancing about like an idiot till 3am! Ha ha. (I am proper hurting now…) Anyways, I love dancing to metal, rock and hardcore - and was thinking I would start using my weekends to travel to other cities and sample other nights of magical metal madness. Like the Corporation or Rock City or something… Any tips? Any good clubs in your area on a Friday/Saturday?
We could all try getting a metal club blog started!  If you wanna paste up a review or blog about a metal night near you, or you wanna let me know about where’s a good place to go dancing, drop me a line/blog at katie.parsons@futurenet.co.uk

Thanks!

Gill: f Enslaved, Immortal and SAHG go I

Monday, September 25th, 2006

Nuclear Blast have just signed I, the new band from Abbath from Immortal and some other dudes from Enslaved, SAHG and Gorgoroth. And it’s awesome! Here’s a bit of biog: “…Abbath has assembled his troops and returns with a vengeance. ‘I’ picks up where Immortal left off, but with a new edge. With classic riffs, monumental choruses and epic arrangements, the upcoming album will make a great impact on the scene.”

Check out some tunes at www.myspace.com/abbathi they are like nothing else!

Peace, love, metal
Gill
