Blog: ‘Hammer’s Take On The Last Astoria Show

Metal Hammer’s James Isaacs pops in to the last night of the Astoria and is less than impressed with the venue’s lack of rock and metal.

“Like mourners shuffling into a dear friend’s wake, ‘Hammer, along with Classic Rock, make the short walk for the last time from the Cro Bar to the condemned Astoria to witness it’s last night before demolition. Like buzzards circling a fresh carcass, the builders are already outside taking down scaffolding and looking for weak spots for the wrecking ball.”

“Inside is no less of a sad scene as the decades of heavy metal history contained within the Astoria’s structure is shunned in favour of wall to wall indie fops, acoustic singer songwriters and a distinct lack of respect to why this venue is so revered by the rock community. So with this in mind, we pay our respects, neck our beers and head off to find something to steal as a momento.”

We all hold our own memories of fascinating gigs at the Astoria because they can NEVER be taken from us. I really am gutted.

R.I.P. Astoria – you’ve served us well.

Many a good night (and ladies met) in the old place over the years. Very sad to see it go! Same old story! If people enjoy something someone else will try and spoil it. Must say though, many years ago, the bomb scare at 2am was a bit worrying. But I’m still here to tell the tale!

R.I.P Astoria!

Why didnt you go to the METAL gig downstairs? ;)
