Help A Reader…

Monday, August 11th, 2008

We at Metal Hammer like to help out a metalhead in need at any opportunity we can and when a reader wanted help with what bands he should get into next, we were only happy to oblige and put his plea on here…but there’s a catch. We know that you guys are the oracle when it comes to the wide and wonderful world of metal so we want you to suggest some bands for this guy.

Here’s his plea:

“Recently, I got into Brainstorm, Symphorce and The Sword but I pretty well bought up all their albums. I also really like Bruce Dickinson’s three most recent albums because the music is good and heavy yet the vocals are clean. I have a lot of the older bands like Iron Maiden (my favourite metal band), Judas Priest, Megadeth, Metallica, and Sabbath. Other bands I have include Arch Enemy, Bathory, Behemoth, Death, Dimmu Borgir, Dream Theatre, Nightwish, Sepultura, Shadows Fall, Symphony X, Testament, and Tool. “Non metal” bands I listen to include AC DC, Boston, Genesis(their old material), The Moody Blues(their old material), Rush and Yes(their old material).”

“I tried listening to Accept, Blind Guardian, Dökken, Edguy, Gamma Ray, Hammerfall, Helloween and Saxon. They’re OK but I wasn’t overly excited about them. I can’t seem to get into folk/Viking metal and I don’t like hair bands. ”

“What I’m looking for now are metal bands with cleaner vocals and perhaps long instrumental parts. That’s why I really enjoy Maiden and Rush. They are not just good technically. Their words and music are well thought out so that each song has variation throughout.”

Got any bands you can suggest? Put them in the comments and help a metalhead in need.

The Best Joke Ever?

Friday, August 8th, 2008

For those who didn’t catch Never Mind The Buzzcocks last night, a conversation between Simon Amstell and makeshift captain Noel Fielding went a little like this.
Simon: “Why don’t I get to hang out with cool people like you. Could I hang out with Courtney Love?”

Noel: “Not really. Courtney would snap you like a twig.”

Simon: ” Yeah…that or kill me and make it look like suicide.”

Following this joke, a disclaimer appeared in huge letters and we’re going to make a similar disclaimer right now. This was a joke made by Simon Amstell on national television and not a Metal Hammer quip. Once again, it was Simon’s joke and not ours.

S-I-M-O-N  A-M-S-T-E-L-L.

We’ve got Amstell’s lawyers phone number if you’re reading this, Miss Love.

Gill: The Definitive Iron Maiden list (according to me)

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

The definitive order of best Iron Maiden albums (according to MH’s Gill)

1)     Number Of The Beast
You only don’t think it is anymore because you’ve played it too much for the last 25 years.
2)     Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
You know this. No one but the insane and the ill-educated will argue with this.
3)     Powerslave
Remember that this is not YOUR top ten, maybe you think it should be higher. What, like number three isn’t high enough for you?
4)     Iron Maiden
And don’t forget that this is where it all started, one of the best and most important heavy metal records ever. And I don’t care if Steve says it could have been heavier. So could Cannibal Corpse’s second album.
5)     Somewhere In Time
Just shut up! This is the album that people always miss, forgetting Adrian Smith is an ace songwriter and that the album is all about being on the World Slavery Tour.
6)     Piece Of Mind
Sure, The Trooper is on there, but so are the classics To Tame A Land (about Dune) and The Flight Of Icarus.
7)     Fear Of The Dark
If the album only consisted of the title track it would still be up there. And Judas My Guide is a lost gem.
8)     Live After Death
It’s not a political move to put a live one in. If it was I’d put a new one in. Just awesome, I still listen to the regular albums and fill in Bruce’s woah-oahing from LAD.
9)     No Prayer For The Dying
Your ‘entry point’ is usually high on any top ten. And this was mine. Aged 10, I had my Holy Smoke shirt and told to take my Bring Your Daughter flag off my wall. Feminist parents, eh?
10)  Brave New World
Bruce was back. And has Ghost Of The Navigator on. Which I always mistakenly call Flight Of The Navigator.

And before you say anything, Killers can get fucked.

Think yours is any better? Send it in.
