People of MetalHammer, in these pragmatically tempestuous times it’s good to see a little bit of acknowledgement being thrown towards the deftones, and their morose duran duran cover :-)

System of a down - Snowblind
Janis Joplin - Summertime (i don’t care that she’s not metal, it’s a good cover, and that’s the sentiment to this list)

my taste of best covers ever:
metallica-stonedead forever
metallica-astronomy
children of bodom-dont stop at the top
cradle of filth-hollowed be thy name
iced earth-the number of the beast
metallica-the more i see
apocalyptica-nothing else matters
death-painkiller
metallica-blitzkrieg
moonsorrow-for whom the bell tolls
iced earth-its a long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Hellsongs yet. Or is Hellsongs a dirty word at Metal Hammer? Their cover of Paranoid is worth a listen.

I always thought the Children of the Damned cover was a Sebastian Bach solo thing, rather than Skid Row. I must be wrong.

Most of all my favourite covers have already been mentioned, so I won’t bother repeating them, but here’s a few more;

KISS - God Gave Rock n Roll To You (you can argue that by re-writing lyrics makes it a KISS song all you want, but the fact remains Argent did it first).

Megadeth - No More Mr Nice Guy (originally by Alice Cooper)

Twisted Sister - It’s Only Rock n Roll But I Like It

Stevie Ray Vaughn - Voodoo Chile (the only man who can cover Hendrix and better it…)

But my 2 favourite covers of all time are both covers of Bohemian Rhapsody. If you’re gonna cover quite possibly the greatest song ever then you’re gonna have to do something very special to it;

First up, this truly haunting cover by Grey DeLisle with nothing but a drumbeat and an Autoharp - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4kXXTe6M1PE - Sends shivers down my spine, as the song says. Believe it or not, her day job is the voice of Daphne in the Scooby Doo cartoons.

Second is this truly fantastic cover by American comedian Rick Miller who does Bohemian Rhapsody in “The 25 most annoying voices in music”. Has to be seen and heard to be believed - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bPpIFzjv6rE
