Hitchens Vs Rev Al!
Christopher Hitchens Vs Rev Al Sharpton...
I've been watching a lot of debates lately. Hitchens V Sharpton being the one I'm currently watching. It seems to be what I do when left alone. Instead of reaching for my cock I find myself typing "loud mouthed Atheist" Vs "Moronic Theist", and I'm having great fun.
It's not just debates. I have been watching lectures at Atheist Conventions but also stuff on Physics and Biology. WakingTheFallen sent me a link to Bill Maher's Religulous, which I had already seen and enjoyed.
Something I've been avoiding is Politics but I have lined up a debate between Hitchens and George Slimy Gobshite Galloway.
Anyway, you get the sort of thing I mean. So, I was wondering about you lot, do you have an interest in this kind of thing? Debates and lectures in general, not just the topics I mentioned. If so, what topics do you like? And what would you recommend to others?
As an Atheist I think my basic list is fairly obvious:
(Gah! I'm crap at remembering names so this will have to do for now)
I would also recommend these blogs/sites:
I have no idea if any of this will interest anyone. I'm basically spouting because I made plans which got rather side tracked when a 6 hour gap formed that I hadn't planned for but should have. I'd have very probably stuck this in the Appr/Unappr thread but I already used my nights quota in their I think.
All my friends like watching lectures on things like TED.
I usually get the highlights off them but haven't watched much without prompting.
The thing of stephen fry scolding the church about condoms and gays was good.
Also 'Richard Dawkins reads his hatemail.'
Do you have a decent link for the Hitchens/Sharpton debate, KingBollock? I can only find a couple of highly pixellated ones on youtube.
But I don;t think the picture quality matters so much with these things. The Hitchens/Galloway debate I watched had terrible picture quality, and to have been able to see proper facial expressions would have been nice. It was a cracking debate too, of all the debates I've seen I've never seen one where the audience acted in such a way.
In case you'd like to see it:
Unemployment has SOME benefits...!
ARGH! I have discovered Dinesh D'Souza. That man is so incredibly intellectually corrupt it makes my blood boil. It's not just that his argument is absolute bollocks but that he tells blatant lies about what others have said. He bases his whole debate method on the ignorance of his audience and it's insulting.
Physics and Biology were my favourite subjects in school. Unfortunately, after two years, my school merged all sciences into one lesson which failed to cover either. Most of what got covered afterwards was Chemistry and Electronics, at such a level that I was already doing the stuff they were teaching at home on my own. I had a Chemistry set which was more indepth than what school was teaching and electronics I had more than covered, it's what I ended up doing in college.
With all the anti-creationism and pro-evolution, both Physics and Biology get talked about a lot, and they both scare the shit out of me. It was probably a mistake at 4am but I have just watched Lawrence Krauss's lecture on A Universe From Nothing:
It was absolutely fascinating and surprisingly easy to follow. I recommend everyone take a look.
I'm really looking forward to whatever videos come out of this years The Amazing Meeting (TAM) put on by James Randi's Educational Foundation. Should be fascinating, just wish I could be there.
An interview that Dawkins did with the creationist Wendy Wright has started to pop up online. I think that I should thank channel 4 for not allowing part 2 of the 7 parts to be shown (because they're wankers), just so I didn't have to suffer quite so much of it.
Watching D'Sousa talk is frustrating because you know he's actually intelligent, he just uses that intelligence in a bad way, but now we have the polar opposite in Wendy Wright. Fucking hell she's thick! And this vacuous turd has the gall to imply that Richard Dawkins isn't clever enough to understand what she's dribbling on about. And she was the one that started accusing Atheists of Ad Hominem arguments!
When unable to provide evidence for her argument against evidence that has just been provided to her, contrary to her argument, she has the habit of just saying that the evidence against her is a lie and she seems to think that that is enough to prove her right. Very weird. And at one point, when she accidentally admits that evolution is true, she actually says "let me back track...".
