Don’t think you like Journey? Power ballads make you puke? You’ll soon change your mind once you treat your ears to these sumptuous gems from the San Francisco AOR behemoths glorious back catalogue. And if you don’t, you can blame Dom Lawson, who probably likes Journey a little bit too much, bless him. Get your Download tickets!

1. DON’T STOP BELIEVING [from ESCAPE, 1981]
Probably the greatest AOR power ballad ever recorded. Playing in the restaurant, just before Tony Soprano was either killed or not killed at all at the end of the last ever episode of The Sopranos. Thus, cooler than fuck itself.

2. WHEEL IN THE SKY [from INFINITY, 1978]
Proof that Journey really do rock, this super-awesome country-tinged anthem is either based on the story of Ezekiel in the Bible or an ancient Egyptian myth. Contains one of the few known references to “sleet” in a rock song.

3. ANY WAY YOU WANT IT [from DEPARTURE, 1980]
Trust us. You will be pissed when you watch Journey at Download and you will shriek along to this like a 10-year-old girl. Especially if you actually are a 10-year-old girl. Good work on sneaking past security, by the way!

4. NEVER WALK AWAY [from REVELATION, 2008]
The opening track on Journey’s first album with current singer Arnel Pineda, this kicks serious arse and has a tune so vast that it can be seen from outer space. You know, like the Great Wall Of China. Only in tune form. Think about it.

5. SEPARATE WAYS (WORLDS APART) [from FRONTIERS, 1983]
So, you think you’re a tough metal guy, huh? This song will prove otherwise, as it reduces you to a blubbering wreck with its heart-rending account of a relationship in tatters. We’re welling up just thinking about it. Sniff.

6. LIGHTS [from INFINITY, 1978]
You may need to bring an extra lighter or three to Download this year, because if Journey play this fantastic ballad you’ll be getting through Ronseal even quicker than you’ll be getting through your stash of warm lager.

7. CAN’T TAME A LION [from TRIAL BY FIRE, 1996]
Technically, you can tame a lion. Not sure what vocalist Steve Perry was on about here, to be honest. Still, it’s one of the most ridiculously catchy songs in the band’s entire repertoire with a typically awesome Neal Schon guitar solo to dribble over.

8. OPEN ARMS [from ESCAPE, 1981]
Memorably ruined by Mariah Carey, Barry Manilow and, terrifyingly, that fat bloke off last year’s X-Factor, this turbo-ballad is guaranteed to make any large group of people sway from side to side like a bunch of dewy-eyed numpties.

9. FAITH IN THE HEARTLAND [from REVELATION, 1981]

An enormous, arena-filling rock epic that has is so good, Journey have recorded it twice. This version, featuring pint-sized powerhouse Arnel Pineda, is the superior one. It sounds like a rocket taking off, but with more guitars.

10. ONLY THE YOUNG [from GREATEST HITS, 1988]

Recorded for the soundtrack of rubbish romantic comedy flick Vision Quest, this is one of Journey’s most enduring anthems. It’s about how the kids are brilliant and everyone else is rubbish. Can’t say fairer than that, can we?

If you hadn’t already heard, Journey and 11 others have been added to the Download bill.

Download will take place on June 12th – 14th at Donington and will feature sets from Faith No More, Slipknot, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, The Prodigy, Limp Bizkit, Motley Crue, Marilyn Manson, Korn, ZZ Top, Down, Journey and many, many more.

Best song IMO.

Great list though

dude! Great list! But I do believe that

“What it takes to win-Revelation” and “Remember me-Armageddon”

should be in the list.

Philip Birtwistle

Lady Luck, probably about as heavy as the band ever got!!

Philip

I listen to Journey, its like a dirty little secret that no one knows… Until I’m jumping in the sofa with a lampshade on my head after half a case of beers, singing:

“Just a smalltown giiirl. Living in a looonely world!”
