111 Arrested At Iron Maiden Gig
Yep, you read that correctly. 111 Iron Maiden fans were arrested before the band’s show at Bogota’s Simon Bolivar Park in Columbia on Saturday (March 7th) as a riot broke out outside the venue. Aye carumba!
111 ticket-less fans were attempting to gatecrash the 25,000-capacity show, and it is reported that riot police attempted to quell the chaos with tear gas, after rocks were thrown.
Of the 111 fans arrested, 40 remain in custody. One police officer, Rolado Arturo Girata Mora, required reconstructive surgery after being injured.
Police said that the riot was caused by “embarrassing acts perpetrated by a group of malcontents who wanted to enter without tickets”.
Quite incredibly, local authorities are set to debate whether heavy metal acts should be allowed to take place in Bogota in the future.
Iron Maiden’s show still went ahead with the band are yet to comment on the riot.

Another reason why Maiden won the Best Live Act award at the Brits, people are that desperate to see them play they’ll gladly riot. Can’t see Coldplay fans being that passionate…
“Quite incredibly, local authorities are set to debate whether heavy metal acts should be allowed to take place in Bogota in the future.”
thats quite possibly the most retarded thing i’ve ever read. It would be like banning pokemon when it was popular cause someone stole a copy.
metal has the most passionate…sometimes silly…but still the most passionate fanz on the planet!!!
i was in that concert all was bullshit, if the cancel metal concerts on my city, Bogota they may have be worried because metal is our porpouse in live
Damn right Jas!
Too bad a bunch of assholes might ruin it for everyone else.
BlakNo1 – I don’t know if they’re arseholes or not, maybe just a bit more hardcore than the rest of the world. No one likes to see agro and violence and I hope the metal brothers in Bogota don’t lose out on seeing more metal shows because of the trouble. Living in London, it becomes pretty easy to take for granted the amount of bands that play here every night and being able to walk in the local HMV and buy pretty much any CD you want. The rest of the world doesn’t have it so easy. Max Cavalera used to tell stories about the Brazilian punk and metal scenes and it sounded pretty full-on, I doubt that too much has changed since. Also, bear in mind that a lot of South American countries are heavily controlled by the Catholic church who look at metal shows as the end of the world so not many bands find it easy to book tours there, so when they do (as is the case with Maiden) it’s pretty much a given that it’ll go OFF!!
I’m surprised more people didn’t get locked-up to be honest. “Scream For Me Bogota!!!”
The same thing happened when Deicide played a show in Chile.
How do the metal bands get in then if the church controls things? Hope that sort of crap doesnt happen here (the religions controlling the music i mean- not the riots) What happened about the Russians trying to ban emo music?
It may not be happening here on a huge scale but it won’t take long I reckon. It already happens in the USA, who you’d think was a pretty free place. Lamb Of God recently had to drop out of their support slot with Metallica at the Forum in LA because the Christian owners of the venue took offence to their name. Be afraid, people.
Russia, on the other hand, seems to be perfectly sensible…
I’m from Bogota, and I attended to both Maiden shows in my city 2008/2009. I try to give my opinion in my “school” english. What happen during the gig is the reflect of our social and economical situation. Simply, not all the Maiden fans can bought the ticket, because the price is about half of the minimun salary earned by a colombian worker.
Believe me, there´s lot of Heavy Metal fans in Colombia, most of them are very young people, from the workclass that unfortunately, can’t pay for the show, so they try to stay arround the Simon Bolivar Park, just to listen the show and drink a beer, then the police arrived, and the riot started. But that is quite normal in Colombia, so we don’t pay too much attention for that.
Despite the fact that “authorities” study the possibility to ban Heavy Metal concerts, we’ll got Opeth, Kiss, Motorhead, Arch Enemy, Amon Amart, Dragonforce and Heaven & Hell confirmed for this year, so you can be calm, we don’t lose any of these shows, Bogota’s headbangers are very passionate.
Authorities aren’t considering banning heavy metal concerts, for fuck’s sake. What they are considering is banning that venue (Simón Bolívar’s Park), because it is hard to control -it’s an open park- and riots always occur. Get your facts straight.
