19 Bands Who Can Play Download’s Classic Rock Day In 2010
So, we were buoyed by the news that Van Halen and it got us thinking about who could play this year’s Classic Rock Sunday at Download. Come on in for our guesses and add your own in our comments section.
Possible headliners:
Aerosmith
Heavily rumoured since the end of Download ‘09, Aerosmith could perfectly handle the baton passed on by Def Leppard. With 35 years of experience beneath their belts and hits in three different generations, this one would be a sure fire winner.
Van Halen
We can dream, can’t we? In all likelihood, Van Halen will stay in the States and watch the dollars come a-rolling in but to see ‘Runnin’ With The Devil’, ‘Ain’t Talkin’ About Love’, ‘Dance the Night Away’ et al rounding off a mad weekend at would be something else, wouldn’t it?
Bon Jovi
Before you all scoff, we suggest you think about what it would be like to spend a day on the lash and then be faced with a 100 minute Bon Jovi greatest hits set. Can you honestly say that you think you’d have a throat left the next day? Sneer all you like, you’d still sing along to ‘Bad Medicine’.
The rest of the bill
Steel Panther
They rammed out the tent, they rocked the Golden Gods, their UK tour is completely sold-out and they’re going to be playing arenas with ZZ Top next month. You want a party-started on classic rock day? Steel Panther are your boys.
Posion
When was the last time Poison played on British soil? If you can pull Brett and his wigs away from boffing loads of balloon-breasted lovelies for 5 minutes and get him to bring ‘Nothing But A Good Time’ with him, it’d be a sure fire winner.
WASP
The new album’s a belter, they’d provide a hard-hitting edge to an otherwise fun-filled day and Blackie Lawless has always been able to command any stage of any size.
The Black Crowes
Especially if Aerosmith end up as headliners. The suns out, the whiskey’s flowing…The Black Crowes would be a perfect backdrop.
Deep Purple
Always great for a festival crowd, Purple went down a storm when they headlined the last Monsters Of Rock
The Darkness
They were offered major dollar-dollar bills to headline the Dubai Desert Rock festival, what price Download to up the ante?
Lynyrd Skynyrd
‘Simple Man’, ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, ‘Give Me Three Steps’, ‘Free Bird’, ‘Tuesdays Gone’…you get the idea.
Alice Cooper
He’d fare better than Manson did this year, right?
Chickenfoot
Maybe not if Van Halen end up playing.
Hawkwind
Stay away from the brown acid.
Saxon
Because they smash it when they’re part of any bill, anywhere at any time.
Sebastian Bach
He’s not been part of the Download festivities yet and we’d love to lose our shit to ‘Piece Of Me’.
Dio
You like the Killswitch version of Holy Diver? See the man himself do it in the flesh and then you’ll really be knocked out.
Foreigner/REO Speedwagon/Toto
By the above suggestions, you can tell how much we enjoyed seeing Journey at this year’s festival. Bring on the MOR!
Who have we missed? Add your suggestions in our comments box!

Sebastian Bach is an ignorant prick. Would be cool but he is ignorant.
All the rest are rad, seen Steel Panther in London in June and seeing them next week at Shepherd’s Bush. Seen Skynyrd live, twas amazing, seeing Dio at Forum. Most of the others would be amazing to.
Sorry guys but you wouldn’t get The Darkness. Stone God’s mabey, but you had them this year. Also that Justin prick wouldn’t and non of stone gods would go back to them.
Where is AC/DC?
Pretty much all of those would be great. I’d actually really like to see Bon Jovi.
If i am not mistaken, didn’t Sebastian Bach come on stage with Guns N’ Roses in 2006? This is what I heard cause I left after five songs cause they were shit but yeah…..?
There should be a little more AC/DC on this list.
Er wheres Iron Maiden I have heard they dont often do festivals but please let it be Iron Maiden.
Bands that sound like Classic Rock:The Answer,Stone Gods and Blackstone Cherry
Motorhead could play ..
Sadly, I’ve never seen AC/DC and don’t expect I’ll ever have the opportunity to see them in the UK. If they can sell out 2 Wembley Stadium, why would they play a festival?
I wouldnt say the darkness are classic rock, and i hate steel panther their joke is wearing very thin. cant stand bon jovi either. But apart from that the rest seem ok to listen to, i would definately go given that lineup
Van Halen would be great but unlike KISS they dont seem to be interested in coming over for the fans when they can make more money in the US.
all of those wood be awfy cool lyk, obvious ommisions are ac/dc and iron maiden. you said sebastian bach hasnt been a part of the download festivities yet, but what about download 06 with gnr? ha. heed b gr8 to see lyk
the darkness? i’d love to see them, but the stone gods are just so much better
wheres black stone cherry?
i think they should spilt download into 3 separate genre specified days next year and get rid of the side stages:
friday is heavy metal day with maiden, priest, heaven and hell/dio, motorhead, saxon, and a couple of newer bands like wolf and cauldron
saturday is thrash day, with the big four plus testament, machine head, and a couple of newer bands like evile and municipal waste
sudnay is classic rock day, with preferebly ac/dc headlining but there too big probs, so van halen headlining, then the likes of deep purple, skynyrd, wasp, motley crue, poison, black stone cherry, airbourne, the answer, stone gods, etc playing.
how wood that go down?
Download classic rock day headliners…The Scorpions.
@Daz: I don’t think BSC were included because they kinda, y’know, played both Download 08 and 09… it’s kind of unlikely they would play three years in a row.
AC/DC,Motley Crue,Motorhead (Poison suck),The Answer
Please not Stone Gods again so boring its The Darkness wiithought the talented one.
the darkness & system of a down.
if anyone can do it, it’s copping.
Ratt, Dokken & White Lion.
And at the risk of sounding like a prick and losing loads of mates… ahhh, fuck it, I don’t give a shit. I saw Stryper twice when I was in high school and they fuckin’ rocked out!! The “To Hell With The Devil” tour and also the “In God We Trust” tour. One of the best live bands I ever saw and that’s a FACT!!
I thought Aerosmith were on hiatus?
Black Sabbath/ Hevean and Hell, Saxon, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Motorhead,…………… Rolling Stones??? maybe
Rush, anyone?
Love\Hate ! About time they where back on big stages agin
motley crue r gonna headline , they pretty much said so this yr at download something along the lines of “how would u like 2 see us come back mainstage nxt year” (i was fucked so cant remember exactly) but motley crue ftw
VAINS OF JENNA!!!!!
Yeah Rush! Bring ‘em on!
Queensryche, Cinderella, Tesla, White Lion, a reformed GNR, maybe Marty Friedman with Megadeth? Great White anybody?
Little Angels, Warrant, Thin Lizzy, Bachman Turner Overdrive
Hola dudes, the question was for classic rock bands guys…how are you all missing the fact that Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath practicaly invented heavy METAL?
AC/DC was a bit of an omission though.
its basically the same thing when it comes to Download Merk ¬_¬
Oh, and where’s the old Led Zepellin rumour?
Bon Jovi won’t ever happen, sorry to say it. They can sell out stadiums all over the country no problem, why would they play a shorter set for less money and less prestige?
As there’s a new album out before the end of the year I wouldn’t bet against Kiss returning. they wouldn’t be able to draw a crowd as big as Download on their own.
Van Halen would be a dream come true for me and I think it’ll happen maybe not 2010 but 2011. Too much money to be made in the states. Like Kiss they wouldn’t draw as large a crowd as a Download festival on their own so I think they’ll turn up eventually.
Aerosmith might be a good shout depending on the health of the band.
AC/DC? Yes please. They should come and say Goodbye in style at Donington.
I suspect the classic rock day may move to the second stage next year as really big classic headliners are becoming less available due to big money american tours.
I could see the line up being:
Deep Purple
Alice Cooper or Rush (special guests)
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Queensryche
Steel Panther (if the joke is still funny in June next year)
WASP
Hot Leg
Million Dollar Reload
I could also see Heaven and Hell turning up after Iommi’s hand heals.
Reef would be fucking amazing for a mid-afternoon slot. Oh yes…
Im thinking Aerosmith
Cant see rush playing download
Interesting. And Metal Hammer only like Steel Panther for that song ‘Death to all but metal’ just cause of the name.
So narrow minded
KISS could get a bigger crowd then they would get at Download, i no allot of fools dont like them because Gene speaks his mind rather then putting on an act but you cant just make stuff up because of that.
bret michaels wears wigs?….shocker…….
AC/DC
Heaven & Hell
As Dio is suggested, how about Benedictum?
@COBHCJQ
YES! HOLY FUCKING YES. Vains Of Jenna are my favourite band, so amazing. New album is better then first. Dirty Penny (a band who sometimes plays with VOJ and are close) follow me on twitter for some reason, I sent them a direct message saying they should tour over here with VOJ and they said it’s in the works and hopefully 2010!
Can’t. fucking. wait.
Where the hell are Maiden??
They could fill a whole day on their own.
I have yet to go to a download but I would not miss it for the world if Maiden headlined!
AC/DC…obviously.
Bon Jovi?
My perfect sunday lineup
AC/DC
Scorpions
Motorhead
Dokken
The Answer
all of them are shit
AC/DC would be fantastic, but they don’t do festivals these days so I highly doubt it’d happen, but never say never.
Maiden did it in 2007 which wasn’t long ago so they won’t do it, they’re more likely to do Sonisphere next year.
Aerosmith would be fuckin rad. As would my ultimate guilty pleasure, The Darkness (stone gods aren’t that good).
And Rammstein of course.
Sigur ros,
Killswitch !
Prince !?
The CRUE! Oh and get sebastian to re-unite with skid row!
CLASSIC ROCK bring on helloween!!! would also love to see REO speedwagon on the main stage good times!!!
The Scorpions.and bon jovi!
yes bon jovi r playing the o2 but if you give them enuf money and just tell them to play their greatest hits plus 1 or 2 songs from the new album it be rocking

I want to see Billy Idol

ACDC and steel panther have been confirmed so they a safe bet.
Would love to see the orginal black sabbath but tony and ozzy have had a major falling out and dio unfortunately has cancer so sabbath are pretty much out
Love to see Deep Purple, Cinderella and Billy Idol play
