Anthrax Drummer Talks About The Invention Of The Blast Beat
In an interview with The Quietus, Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante speaks out about the invention of the blast beat. Get your Sonisphere tickets here!
Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante is well-renowned for being the pioneer of the blast-beat while in side-project band Stormtroopers Of Death and here’s what he had to say about that:
“Ha! If you mean that I decided to sit in my room and invent it, no it wasn’t like that. The thing was something that had been around the NY hardcore scene for ages but hadn’t been used for other things. The first time it really happened was on S.O.D’s ‘Milk’ song, so I guess you could say I had a lot to do with it. Now a lot of bands are using it, and doing it really well.”
Sonisphere will be headlined by Metallica and Linkin Park and will take place on August 1st – 2nd at Knebworth. Also on the bill will be Nine Inch Nails, Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, Machine Head, Lamb Of God, Alice In Chains, Mastodon, Anthrax, Airbourne, Thin Lizzy, Killing Joke and The Sword.

didn’t suffocation have something to do with the invention of the blast beat?
Suffocation didn’t have nothing to do with inventing it. Milk was probably one of the first though. Some people claim Anit-Chirst by Sepultura was the first blast beat. Personally i don’t think it’s much of a blast beat but whatever.
My favourite drum style.
Hail Boecklin!
oh ok, fair enough kris, its just that in the roadrunner united dvd, some guy (cnt remember who) mentioned that the drummer from suffocation started blast beats….but 1 thing is 4 sure….SOAD really did take blasting to a whole new level lol
actualy, blast beats have been around since the 60’s coz jazz bands had drummers that used them…
