Architects interview: “we’re not a hype band”
We spoke to Architects Sam and Tom, here is a sneak preview of the interview which will be in Metal Hammer.
As we point out, it’s a good thing to get as much writing in now while the guys are young and the fire is hot. There are depressingly few bands that we can cite who released great, important and impressive music after 10 years or 10 albums.
“We’re not a hype band, but there are times when I wish we were,” says Tom with a knowing smile. “But I can sit here and not give a shit because things are always getting better for us. There are more kids at the shows, and the kids who are there are more psyched about it. Things are on the up, but maybe just a little slower than some of our peers. That’s fine. You kind of get used to it.”
Architects are good: the music is pumped with both controlled rage and unhindered heart, accessible and ambitious, aggressive and beautiful. But doesn’t a band this heavy have a limited future? Even Slayer have reached a glass ceiling of popularity.
“It’s different for every band,” says Tom diplomatically. “You could guess how long we’re going to last. You can cite comparisons and parallels but it’s never the same twice. It’s impossible to say whether we’ll split up in five years or 10 years. When we wrote the first album, Nightmares, we were all about 16. We started touring properly when I’d just turned 18. I’m 21 now so we’ve done about 17 tours through the US, Canada, and Europe. If I quit this when I’m 26, I’d still be able to sort my life out. We’re all still… kids. I went to college, but we’d book a two-week tour and do that instead. It’s funny because I’d tell my tutors, ‘I’m going to be away for two weeks’ and they’d say, ‘Oh, that’s fine, are you going on holiday?’ I’d say ‘No, I’m going on tour with my band’ and they’d be all dejected like, ‘Oh…’ Oh what? So it would be better for me to sit on a beach doing nothing than do something worthwhile?”
The force is strong with you, young Jedi.
Tom concludes: “We’ll just stop doing it when it stops being fun.”
