Beez: Is Newsted Coming Back A Good Idea?
With news breaking today that Jason Newsted may be playing in place of Robert Trujillo at Metallica’s Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame induction, Beez wonders if this is a good idea.
Let’s get this out of the way straight away, I’m a huge Jason Newsted fan. When I was a kid, it was he, Gene Simmons and Nikki Sixx that made me want to pick up a bass guitar, I still miss that mental screwed-up face that he pulls when he headbangs and the “Die! Die! Die! MUTHAFUCKA! DIE!” part of Creeping Death still doesn’t sound right without him.
In fact, Newsted seems to be more appreciated by the Metallica camp these days than when he was actually IN the band. It’s heart-warming to see because Newsted still remains one of the finest four-stringers that I’ve ever witnessed in the flesh and always came across as a genuinely awesome guy whenever you saw TV/print interviews with him.
Even with all of this on his side, the current rumour that Newsted is going to play the whole set with Metallica at their upcoming induction to the Rock n’ Roll Hall Of Fame is worrying to say the least. Don’t get me wrong, I’m firmly expecting this to turn out to be crossed wires between Ulrich and Newsted, and for current bass-slinger Robert Trujillo to take the stage for at least one song with the band.
It’s not even that this would be ‘that’ much of a big deal if this rumour came to fruition, but Metallica seem a much more stable unit today than they’ve been in a long, long time. ‘Death Magnetic’ was an absolute rip-snorter of an album and if that’s the first thing that this incantation of Metallica has stamped their name on, can you imagine what’s coming next? Ho-ly shit!
Even if Newsted was to play the full set with the band on Saturday, it probably wouldn’t be that big a deal in the grand picture. Even still, put yourselves in Trujillo’s shoes? It’d make you feel a little awkward, wouldn’t it?
It’s worth reiterating that this is all purely rumour at the current point. Seeing Metallica rocking out with Newsted once more will be a really stirring thing for all of us (especially the old school ‘Tallica die-hards!), but Trujillo is part of the band right now and has been part of a successful album and touring campaign. Hell, the band’s o2 shows in London were both immense! That cannot and should not be discounted and I think that the Metallica guys know this.
I’m expecting a statement from the Metallica camp denying that Trujillo will be excluded from performing with the band any second now. What do you think?
‘Til next time,
P.S. thanks to everyone who came and rocked out at the Guitar Hero: Metallica party at the Indigo2 party on Saturday. It was kick-ass for so many of you to come and hang out!
Metallica will be inducted into this year’s Hall Of Fame by RHCP bassist Flea. The band have also recently announced a US tour for this fall and have just released a trailer for Guitar Hero: Metallica where you can watch James Hetfield blow up a house.
Sonisphere will be headlined by Metallica and Linkin Park and will take place on August 1st – 2nd at Knebworth. Also on the bill will be Nine Inch Nails, Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, Machine Head, Lamb Of God, Alice In Chains, Mastodon, Anthrax, Airbourne, Thin Lizzy, Killing Joke and The Sword.
