Beez: Rammstein And The Greatest Show On Earth

rammsteinhammer_90Beez recaps one of the most elaborate stage shows to ever grace metal. (Contains spoilers). Get your Sonisphere tickets here!

My friends call me Beez. I’m a 26 year-old male who loves rum, action films where lots of shit gets blown up, massive boobs, boxing and brutal horror movies. Bearing this in mind, the question that runs through my head in the wake of Rammstein’s mind-blowing Wembley Arena show was: why was I stood applauding and whooping at the top of my lungs at the sight of a German built like a brick shithouse riding a 10-foot penis that’s spraying faux spunk into a crowd of rowdy metalheads?

The answer is simple – because it’s easy as pie to get carried away when faced with the greatest spectacle in the live environment today. Don’t get me wrong, there are better live acts out there, but in terms of visual excellence, no band on the planet gets within a billion miles of these German mentalists.

From the first seconds, this was a jaw-dropping demonstration in showmanship of the very highest quality. Opening the show by smashing through a wall, Till Lindermann then blasts through ‘Rammlied’ with lightning appearing inside his mouth. It’s as unsettling as it is impressive and that’s the tone that runs throughout the evening.

Over the course of 90 pulsating minutes, there’s more fire than a dragon can manage after Bombay’s finest curry, a ‘stage-invader’ being set on fire, explosions aplenty, the incredible sight of Till battering keyboardist Christian Lorenz in a bath before showering him with some of the maddest pyro you’ll ever see and Lindermann’s flame-throwing angel wings at the show’s finale is truly breath-taking.

It’s almost a minor detail at a Rammstein show but it has to be noted that sonically, the sound and power that the German industrialists brought to the plate felt like you were being rhythmically punched square in the chest over and over again for an hour and a half. Yes, this is metal theatre, but ‘Ich Will’, ‘Keine Lust’, ‘Ich Tu Dir Weh’ et al provide a hell of a soundtrack to accompany the bedlam going on onstage.

If anybody out there left any arena on this jaunt and said that they were either bored or unimpressed, I encourage you to grab them by the ears and yell “they blew up fake dead babies who had lasers for eyes! What the fuck is wrong with you?!” in their faces instantly.

If you missed this show, your Facebook and Twitter feeds will doubtlessly have been flooded by people saying how incredible this show was. They weren’t exaggerating and if ever you needed a reason to get a ticket for Sonisphere, this is it. August can’t come quickly enough.

Sonisphere Knebworth will take place from July 30th – August 1st and will feature performances from Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, The Cult, Iggy & The Stooges, Slayer, Anthrax, Placebo, Bring Me The Horizon, Fear Factory and Henry Rollins with more to be announced.

Bring on Sonisphere! This sounds nothing short of epic!

NINTallica

The crowd surfing in a rubber dinghy was pretty awesome too. Good night out, lot of respect for CombiChrist after a good performance.

AshesArise

That show was amazing, Manchester was off the hook! and that effect flake did that went busting through the crowd, the kind that goes right through you, those in attendance will know what im on about here.

truly the best live show i have ever witnessed without a doubt

Kroneis

Less than two weeks left for them to get to Oslo!!!! =D

Psyniac

I was there and every single second was amazing. The best night of my life.

The Manchester show was fucking amazing <3
Best live band ever, without a doubt!

Mosher Sam

I travelled up from Brighton to Birmingham and it was AMAZING, definately worth all the money etc etc…my brother also went to see them at Wembley the day after but the cunts took his ticket and then wouldn’t let him in!

Siobhan

Travelled down from Glasgow to the Manchester show and it was so worth it. Possibly the best live show I have ever seen in my life, Combichrist were ace and then Rammstein just came and destroyed it! Roll on Sonisphere!

The Birmingham show was the best night of my life. I’m the happiest man on God’s green Earth.

Agreeing with AshesArise and Acey

Manchester was absolutely incredible, and easily one of the best gigs I have ever been too. However, do not think you saw Rammstein at their best – as I was discussing after the gig with a friend, when they play Sonisphere the outdoor stage will allow for bigger explosions and better pyrotechnics. Rammstein may have been incredible on this tour – when it comes to Sonisphere, they will be out of this world.

Manchester was amaazing, totally worth the 6hr round trip from newcastle :D

they should have had a disclaimer ‘Warning: any gig you go to after this will be slightly disappointing’ :p

I was right at the front and almost in the exact centre at Manchester, perfectly placed to witness this awesome show. I touched Richard when he jumped down off the stage at the end! Best live show I’ve ever seen by my favourite band in the world ever!!!

Honourable mention to Combichrist as well, I’d never heard of them up until I found out they were supporting Rammstein and now I want all their albums too.

Carl Loves Malefice

Wembley last night was out of this world.

That introduction was so amazing.

manchester was awesome, this was the second time I have seen rammstein, the first being back in 2005 in manchester, and it was my finaces 3rd the lucky bastard! we both are going sonisphere and cant wait, manchester was amazing, but I know sonisphere is going to be even better. We was on the rail as well, and shall be there for soni! and, yeah, that effect flake did, it was like sonic boom or something , mad, could have almost knocked you off your feet.

Was there on wednesday at the LG. Fuckin incredible. Before the gig, I thought they might have been getting on a bit, but fuck no, imo the perofmence was on par with volkerball. Surprised at how brutal the pits were n all, let alone the circle pit during Ich Wil

Birmingham show was incredible, I can’t believe what we witnessed, the most incredible sound and pyrotech I’ve ever seen inside an arena – the guitar riffs are even heavier live and Till’s vocals have never sounded better. Seen Maiden, Metallica, DC Motorhead multiple times but Rammstein blizted them all. See you all at Knebworth!!!!

I was at the Wembley gig too…nothing short of pure EPIC by the greatest band of all time. Sonisphere won’t know what hit them!

Roadkill

After seeing these guys the other night all I can say is… Sonisphere have won the battle with Download.

The entire line-up of Download put together (whatever it may be in the end) will not match the spectacle these guys put on.

And the music is headsplittingly heavy as well.

Roll on Knebworth

I went to Manchester and Birmingham of the two i thought Manchester was the better performance however both nights were amazing. I’ve seen Rammstein 5 times and there are still amazing. Sonisphere is going to be epic on sooo many levels cannot wait, it will also be my first sonisphere festival as well \m/

AshesArise

alot of manchester here! great stuff guys, good night was had

One of the most spectacular and amazing gigs I have ever been too! They sounded great and of course the pyro’s were out of this world, im going Download but seriously thinking of also making it to Soni just to see Rammstein owning the Main stage!!!

They were bloody excellent live, dont really like the new album but it comes out very well live. combichrist were good, but the drummer had an obsession wiv snapping his drumsticks.

Rammstein were absolutely immense at Wembley. the Engel pyro-wings at the end just topped the exploding babies. im pretty sure I will never find anything else entertaining compared to that.

Christy Rodgers

The Manchester gig was the best experience of my life without a doubt!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rammstein are not just the greatest live band ever: they are the greatest band ever!

Wasn’t the best show I’ve been to, I’d say this was the 4th best show i’ve ever been to! First two was the 2 nights I saw them at the apollo in manchester on the mutter tour. third was the last tour, Mein Teil was amazing on that tour! The fourth best was the other night.

Rammstein set the bar so high on the mutter tour on a reasonibly small venue that they could never outdo that! They went upto 21 on that tour. The other night was a mere 11 whereas other bands are only a 10 at best!

God HatesMeMost

BOTH bands at Wembley were fuckin’ immense – no other words for it! I can’t wait for Sonisphere now!!

Loraine

I think this tour topped their last, and l did’nt think that was possible.
Brilliant, awsome night at Wembley, Thank You R+ xx.

The Mark of Zur En Arrh

The Wembley gig now stands as my 2nd favourite live metal show of all time, only following Metallica playing all of MOP at Download.

saw em at manchester and it was unbelievable. words simply cannot describe Rammstein’s shows… you HAVE to go see them to believe it.

They were unbelievable, shame i was seated, didnt quite know what to do with myself. i must say i wasn’t a fan of combichrist tbh, to me, it just sunded like chav hardcore dance with an angry guy, definatly needed some guitars. But great show from R+, was my first and i loved every second, cant wait for soni!

eonblue

Was at Manchester the other night – my 5th R+ gig on the LIFAD tour so far (have also been to Geneva, Munich, Berlin & Paris), and as ever it was awesome. The exploding, laser-eyed babies are new additions for this leg of the tour, but the set has remained the same throughout. This current tour is their best production yet, and is quite simply the most spectacular gig you’re ever likely to see. Roll on Sonisphere – hier komme die sonne!

BigDaddy

After seeing them at the LG on Wednesday, Knebworth looks a whole lot better.

Rim Sting

I’ve seen The Who when they were all still alive, Deep Purple with Tommy BOlin, Yes, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Muse, Black Sabbath, ELP, etc etc, but none of them come close to Rammstein. Wednesday night at B’ham was by far the best gig I’ve ever witnessed. They are going to absolutely destroy Sonisphere.

I was there at Wembley, totally fucking awesome show!! Special shout to the dude from Rochester who was sat next to me, was nice meeting you and I hope you got home safe dude!

Rammstein saw them since muter skint this time,… and i aint doing sonisphere. Saw Alice Cooper on all uk EU tour so not fussed in missing out. Iron Maiden well a sniff at the new material will wait for 2011. Iggy Pop is crap.

I saw them In 2005 on the reise reise tour ever and i thought they were absolutley unbeatable by any after that But i travelled down from glasgow to birmingham and holy fuck did they top the reise reise tour by a mile

Kevin Lyth

Went to the M.E.N Arena was blown away !!! I’ve always loved “Keine Lust” and was waiting for it ??? but it was surpassed by Du Hast !….it was worth the money alone just for this one performance ! The best comment I’ve heard anyone say was…Impossibly Amazing. Their latest album “Liebe ist für alle da” everyone should buy it, I’m left feeling hollow wondering who could top that ? answers on a postcard please ?

JDPower

Can someone please tell me what the ‘effect’ Flake did that your on about, I can’t for the life of me remember what you mean.

It was a great gig (I was at Brum), I actually thought the Reise Reise tour was better but maybe I’d just built my hopes up too much after that. Though Flake did come right over our heads for the dinghy bit. Which was cool.

Combichrist were ok for a warm up band, all the songs sounded the same but they were entertaining enough, mainly thanks to the drummer who went through about 200 drumsticks and trashed his kit twice!

after seeing em in brixton ‘05 i thought id know what to expect but jez did the raise the bar again in wembley!!!! amazing concert, travelled over from dublin for it and will def be heading Knebworth direction. rammstein and slayer have to be the two most intense live bands ever. fair play to combichrist, one of the better support acts ive seen

Laurence

Travelled down from Glasgow to Manchester to see this and all I can say it was worth every penny and minute on the trains down.

best gig ever and I’ve seen a hell of a lot bands over the years. I’ve just started telling people to go see rammstein even if they dont like them, go see them anyway!

fucking awesome!

Bethany

I’ve seen Rammstein twice, first time in 1998 (Family Values) and a headline show in 2001. They were both amazing shows. I live in Missouri (US), and I would LOVE to see them again. I hope they come back and tour America really soon, this review and the comments are just killing me.
