80’s metallers Europe have been confirmed to close this year’s Bloodstock festival!
No other band could ever bring a more climactic close to the BOA 2009 proceedings than Swedish rock legends EUROPE, who we are thrilled to announce as this year’s final headliner. In the last three decades, the undisputed Kings of melodic metal made you perm your hair, wear spandex and scream at the top of your lungs the most anthemic rock songs of all times.
Of course there was always more to EUROPE than the stereotype might suggest and they’ve always been a challenging and rewarding sonic experience. Everything you heard about them is true: Mighty life-defining sounds, unabashed passion for their art and riveting live shows. Singer Joey Tempest enthuses over the event that will mark their ONLY UK show of 2009:
“RAAAAWWWWKKK! It’s with great pleasure we will be returning to the UK this summer. We’ve just finished recording our 8th studio album ‘Last Look At Eden’. Can’t wait to blast out some new tunes and some Europe classics. See you at Bloodstock festival on the 16th of August.”
The Final Countdown for the metal extravaganza of the summer – BOA 2009- starts now.
Line up so far: AMON AMARTH, APOCALYPTICA, ARCH ENEMY, BATTLELORE, BLIND GUARDIAN, CANDLEMASS, CARCASS, CRADLE OF FILTH, DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER, ENSLAVED, EQUILIBRIUM, EUROPE, GIRLSCHOOL, GWAR, KATATONIA, KREATOR, MILLION DOLLAR RELOAD, MOONSPELL, MUNICIPAL WASTE, SATYRICON, SAXON, TURISAS, THE HAUNTED, SABATON, WINTERSUN.
Date: 14th, 15th, 16th August 2009-01-26
Location: Catton Hall, Walton on Trent, Derbyshire

Fucking terrible announcement.
Its a bit early for an april fool’s isn’t it ??
i bet most people at the festival would have great difficulty in naming another europe song, other than the final countdown
Europe are a fucking great band, people’s problem is that they only know one of their songs! I think they’re the wrong band for BOA, but they’re bloody great live.
Fuckin’ lakes!
Not overwhelmed. Very disappointed, but I’ll give them a chance.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
comon my dying bride for bloodstock………………
Bugger. Thats……. disapointing. ah well, could be worse.
Calm down dears…
It is already a certain date in some territories…
Methinks somebody started their foolery a little early…
\m/
Coming Next – Motorhead headline the Smash Hits Awards 2009 with Nashville Pussy opening the show and Robbie Williams headlines the re-started Monsters of Rock at Donington, ably supported by Faithless and those other fantastic heavy rockers, Chicane!
I agree – great live band, wrong type of crowd!
Very bad type of crowd, imo Europe would be more suited to somewhere like Download, they should’ve got Dimmu Borgir to headline BOA
why europe ?why not judas priest or heaven and hell or nightwish again !
fucking power metal
Judas Priest or Heaven and Hell yes but Nightwish again? No fucking way, that has been Bloodstock’s biggest mistake to date, Europe is most definately preferable to that!
I was hoping for Heaven and Hell or Megadeth though.
Could it be April 1st by any chance?
are u taking the piss?????
im sorry but bloodstock is just an embarrasment, first wintersun cancell and now this
im gonna auction my ticket LOLOL
I take it that most people are thinking “The Final Countdown” when they read this post? It’s the 21st centuary people, YouTube or file-share some Europe songs and check out what they are REALLY like. This is hella cool, I’d bet money on loads on the other bands on the bill crowding the sides of the stage to check them out when thay take the stage.
Awesome choice Bloodstock, can’t wait to drink some beer and sing along with Joey Tempest!!!
I’ve already asked before in a previous post for Manowar to be considered for next year but, as I sit here in my room listening to Deep Purple’s “Perfect Strangers”, any chance of getting them for next year as well?
Cue loads of boo’s for me and expulsion from the Metal Hammer forums…
I fucking wish they’d get Deep Purple! Or Deep Purple Mk 3 (Coverdale/Hughes)! I think the festival is a little small for either of these options at the moment though, and completely true – so many better songs than The Final Countdown (let’s not forget a guitarist left over that tune!).
I think this may not be true….
Well it is true.
Look on the Bloodstock official website.
I think it’s an insult to Europe that people believe this could be a wind up. I think they’d have had to make it a more obvious joke like Linkin Park, Blink 182 or Busted (can you imagine?), but as Europe is completely plausible as a Bloodstock band it’s not really a joke.
They have Equilibrium Katatonia and Carcass that crappy announcement aint putting me off.
Awesome announcement !! This just puts the icing on the cake for me. Now I’m definitely there again this year.
A great live band , and having listened to some of their more recent output (unlike some) I can say that they are still relevant today.
They are so much more than just Final Countdown !
Stop whingeing and move on , Rock / Metal should unite us all ! I am not a fan of the more extreme end of the Metal Spectrum , but fully enjoyed Overkill , Opeth and Kataklysm last year amongst others.
Its not a bad announcement at all. People need to lighten up.
What people need to do is go and listen to Wings Of Tomorrow or Start From The Dark and then they’ll see that it’s not as ridiculous as they thought it was.
i think we need some more death metal announced tbh
The point to be made is that Bloodstock is a METAL festival and shouldn’t be promoting rock especially wuss rock! They need to change their name to Download August Edition!
Now that I do agree on. Whilst some of their stuff is pretty heavy at times, they’re not metal, hard rock at most.
This is good for me….might just be my 1st Bloodstock experience!
“The Final Countdown (let’s not forget a guitarist left over that tune!).”
that guitarist also rejoined….
Seriously, im 23 and seen europe 3 times. i think a lot of people will be very surprised. check out 7 doors hotel or gotta have faith, its not what most people would think of. gotta lot of respect for this band, really good live and original line up.give it a chance.
