Bring Me The Horizon: “Metal Hammer Hates Us”
Bring Me The Horizon are universally hated for taking more pride in their appearance than they do the music that informs their sound. But they’ve come to terms with that, and their growing fanbase don’t care anyway…
“Everybody hates us,” laughs BMTH’s resident tattooed beat messiah, singer Oli Sykes. “Including Metal Hammer. We’re used to it.”
“It’s not just them, it’s everybody back home,” sighs guitarist Curtis Ward. “See, when we were 16, we wore a lot of pink. It still bothers them, for some reason.”
“Our first few tours,” Oli explains, “we just brought all our friends. After awhile, it just got fucking ridiculous, so we started to send people off to get trained for shit, so at least they’d be useful.”
And so schoolmates manned lighting rigs, and younger brothers became drum techs.
“We’re supporting a lot of fucking people,” jokes BMTH drummer Matt Nichols, “so we can’t fuck anything up.”
Together, they’re capable of all the wit and charm you could possibly expect from a pack of Yorkshire urchins thrust into the spotlight, but it’s when they’re separated from the pack that things go awry. That’s when the drunken belligerence comes into play. That’s when Oli gets arrested for peeing on girls, or when messy (and often staged) fistfights get uploaded to YouTube.
“All that, that’s what the new album’s about,” Oli says of the often confessional Suicide Season, which features a girl holding a pile of her own entrails on the cover.
“It’s basically about spilling your guts.”
They are, in fact, more gang than band, which makes sense. After all, there’s about a three per cent chance that Bring Me the Horizon is the new Guns N’ Roses. Not great odds, but still a better chance than Axl Rose currently has. They are, in essence, hardcore for the softcore, and young American audiences are going apeshit for them.
“I think being British has actually helped us over here,” says Oliver. “I think they like the accents, or sumfin.”
And, even though he’s loath to admit it, Oliver’s looks have something to do with it, as well. He’s a preening rock star in a scene that never even considered the notion. Sure, Oli’s ‘real’. But he still has a make-up bag.
An hour later, Bring Me the Horizon are buzzed and decidedly finished with rock show rituals. Staying in town for the evening will require financial contributions all around for cab fare, and most of the band are leaning towards crawling onto the bus and snoozing to their next gig in New Jersey.
All except for the Boy-King, who refuses to let his liver go unscarred.
“We gotta fuckin’ go out, man,” Oli whines.
“But you’re already drunk,” Curtis points out.
“Honestly, I won’t get anybody beaten up,” he grins. “Well, I can’t promise that. I’ll try.”
His band mates grimace and go back to stuffing socks and sweat-drenched t-shirts into duffel bags.
“The problem is,” Oli reasons, “I’m not doing drugs on this tour. Without the drugs, I can’t tell how fucking drunk I am.”
“That’s a good idea,” mutters a Cancer Bat, the band whom they’re sharing the dressing room with. “We should get some drugs.”

A friend of mine found out his 13-year old daughter was becoming a fan of BMTH. He grounded her for 2 weeks. Fuckin’ funny it was… Can’t really blame Bry though, if my kid listened to that shit I’d slap him silly too. No social service department would disagree with you.

The thing is, the music isn’t bad.
It’s the vocalist and this attitude that pisses me off and is why I will never support them, be it by buying an album or even going to see them at a festival.

Carl Loves… true story!! Bryan (my mate) has a converted bedroom where he keeps all his music and DVD’s cos his wife isn’t really a music fan, nevermind a metal fan, and didn’t really want his poster collection up in the lounge room. So he sits in there with his bean bag and a stocked beer fridge and rocks out by himself. The room is next to his daughter’s room and for two weeks he just became this obnoxious pain to her by playing pretty much everything released by the Earache and Roadrunner record lables from the early 1990’s. It worked though, she’s hardly mentioned a word about that BMTH shit since and certainly doesn’t play it in the house anymore.
I found the current issue’s feature on the band and their fans rather funny.
Especially when some american kid dresses like their drummer and tries to sound cool by ‘being British’ then bails when Oli glances at him.
It’s been said before – Oli is a terrible vocalist and his attitude irritates me greatly.
Honestly I must agree with Anon, if the band just had the sense to boot their floppy fringed excuse for a vocalist out the band and get someone who needn’t rely on ’sex appeal’ to get noticed, but instead turn heads for having a decent voice.
There’s a world of difference between a vocalist that sounds truly pissed off or even monsterous like Karl Sanders or Randy Blythe, and the sound of a baby having a skitz, throwing their toys out the pram in a futile attempt to sound metal.

I love how crazy everyone goes for them whether they hate them or love them. My favourite band is Machine Head but i can still listen to BMTH and pick out the good bits, sure they look like a bunch of kids…but maybe that’s because they ARE a bunch of kids and I bet all of these “proper metal” people would die to be in a band getting as much attention as BMTH, I say good on them but they aren’t the best band in the world.
