Buckcherry Bomb Back
It follows their ‘Buckcherry’ debut, which sold an amazing 500,000 copies in the States off the back of gigs with Kiss, Lenny Kravitz and Fuel. Produced by John Travis (Sugar Ray, Monster Magnet), the album includes the songs ‘Whiskey In The Morning’, ‘Ridin”, ‘Helpless’ and ‘Underneath’, but one of its most graphic tunes is likely to be ‘Porno Star’.
“It’s based on the life of a male porn star – I put my mind in his body,” grins frontman Josh Todd. “I mean, what an amazing existence, but very lonely, too. I also twisted in (skin flick actress) Savannah’s suicide. The song has a very nasty, sexual guitar riff.”
The success of ‘Buckcherry’ was largely due to the song ‘Lit Up’, which contained the much-repeated line of “I love the cocaine”. This time around, Todd wrote about another of his weaknesses.
“There have been a few letdowns this year,” confesses the singer. “At times I was, like, I don’t fucking wanna get up in the morning. ‘Whiskey In The Morning’ is about alcoholism, which I’ve battled for a long time. I used to have that morning drink every day. The worst, most destructive drug of all is legal.”
Guitarist Keith Nelson says that ‘Time Bomb’ is “more musical, with more flavour and taste” than the debut, and when asked what they were trying to achieve with the album, he laughs: “No DJs!” with a nod to Buckcherry’s solidly rock-based sound. “Seriously, John completely understood we were making a new-sounding record, incorporating the past and future sonically.”
