Cancer Bats’ Liam Cormier: “Everyone Has This Hatred Inside Them: ‘I Want To Kill That Person’.”
You’re three albums into Cancer Bats, has the full Bats story been told? You’re more three dimensional than just being a fun Canadian band…
“Because we’ve done a lot of press so people have read a lot about the band I think a lot of journalists think, ‘why can’t you just write a song about Maple syrup?’ They’re from Canada. I feel like that story’s already been done, it’s lazy bullshit.”
Have people got your wrong or simplified you – four characters into one adjective.
“Lots of people just think, ‘oh that band’s wacky, they scream a lot and they play metal’. I’ll do interviews where people are like, ‘what are you so angry about?’ or ‘what strip clubs and beer do you love?’ and I’m like, ‘two of us don’t drink and we don’t like stripclubs because we respect women’ people are like, ‘WHAT?! You’re a metal band!’ That was doing press for Hail Destroyer. A lot of people thought they had us pegged: you’re this band from Canada, friends with Alexisonfire and Billy Talent and we assume you guys play hockey and don’t give a shit. It’s not like we have to overcome that, because we don’t care. And we definitely love being from Canada. We don’t mind a lot of those stereotypes… I love maple syrup.”
“A lot of it relies on me to direct that change if I’m doing the interviews. I can kind of control what gets said. The big news story on this record is that we have Jay on bass. I think he’s why our record sounds so different this time round. I think it sounds so full because we’re a full band this time round. That’s what’s different about our band this time, we have a bass player.”
Liam, you’re a positive dude, but clearly still have something inside you that makes you want to scream.
“With this record there’s more… Darkness, kind of anger that exists, I think everyone has this actual hatred, that’s inside of them, that dark side where you’re like I hate that person I want to kill them. It’s like you have that battle, I want to go to this person’s work and actually kill them and everyone may have these moments but you keep it in check. I was going further down that road.”
