Chris Cornell On New Timbaland-Produced Album
Chris Cornell has been quoted as saying he’s ‘not particularly concerned about possible backlash’ of his new album ‘Scream’.
Former Soundgarden/Audioslave singer Chris Cornell has said he’s not particularly concerned about a possible backlash over his decision to put away the guitar in favour of continuous dance grooves and hip-hop beats on his new, Timbaland-produced, solo album, ‘Scream’.
“At this point, it’s all theory,” he said. “It’s like when I got together with the Rage Against The Machine guys for Audioslave and there was all this talk about how it was sacrilege from Rage fans, Soundgarden fans — even old ladies on the street would come up to me and say, ‘That’s a terrible idea!’ Maybe I’m an optimist or just an idiot but I really think the fans will come around to the concept. I could sit down and make a wall-to-wall guitar album tomorrow. I think it’s important for fans to know that but if I’m doing something that inspires me musically then I think it will inspire someone else too.”
“Musically, this is the most ambitious thing I’ve been a part of. It’s almost like a movie soundtrack,” says Cornell.
Hmmm. Make up your own mind here. We’re not sure about the new Crunk Cornell. It seems a bit like watching your dad doing a hip-hop impersination, doesn’t it? It’s like a civil servant doing the bogle or Richard Madely’s Ali G impersination.

The thing is, this could work but they need a good hip-hop producer. Timbaland is a one trick pony dishing out pop nonsense, but if he had worked with an alternative hip-hop producer it could of been good. Chris Cornell needs to listen to Mike Patton and Peeping Tom to realise that’s how it should be done!
Actually the album doesn’t sound anything like hip-hop. And pulling the age thing – “your dad doing a hiphop impersonation” – is just cheap, especially as Cornell looks better and gives stronger performances at 44 than most people do in their 20s and 30s – did you see the 150-minute epic show at the Shepherds Bush Empire this week? Rock writers tried the same putdowns when Bowie imported drum & bass influences into “Earthling”, and it was just as cheap a shot back then.
The key difference being that Earthling was awesome.
This, however, is a steaming mound.
Actually it’s very similar to Earthling in all kinds of ways: lyrically dark, sonically complex, comprehensively weird. Not everyone’s cup of cha for sure, but perhaps you should give it another listen and widen your musical vocabulary a little. There’s a lot of travel between “awesome” and “shite”, y’know.
i heard some of the new stuff – certainly not appealing ..and actually quite sad
I was a huge Chris Cornell fan during his Soundgarden and Audioslave days and even the odd solo shot he had before but this album is not one I’ll ever buy. For the simple reason, it’s his choice if he wants to transfer over to the other side of the music spectrum but it’s my choice that I no longer enjoy his music and that’s because it’s just as bad in sound as every other R’n'B hit out there. The only difference and it’s respectable, is that Cornell remains lyrically talented. The music is shit though.
This new Cornell is an embarrassment. Doesn’t he have enough money already? I agree with Mike…if it’s really about experimenting, as Chris has claimed in previous interviews, you don’t hook up with an established mainstream producer and call it experimentation.
This is just for a money overload, plain and simple. And it’s not even catchy, at that. And yes, I actually listened to almost the entire album.
I think people need to get passed the fact that Timbaland produced it, and just enjoy the music. I honestly believe that if Timbaland used a pseudo name, this record would have been better recieved among rock fans. Open you mind a bit and you might just like the album. And for the record, this album is not “hip-hop” at all, most tracks aren’t “club” tracks either. If you listen to the album from beginning to end, it’s starts to sound more along the lines of a movie score.
i hate chris cornell from now on, they r silly with their faces sayin’ ‘yo we want to make some money with something so tell chris that if he shakes his ass with the girls that could sell much’ and and this guy chris who has a blurred brain i think (!) try to sing like some popstars, so why the hell u were in Audioslave or soundgarden? this is meaningless i cant and i never will understand the point of this.. maybe i am so good at ‘be’ ing myself!
just rememberin’ the lyrics of ‘be yourself’ ..
this reminds me of vanilla ice try to became a hardcore star a little while ago..
