As great as Pantera were, as much as I love Dime’s playing and Phil’s vocals, I’ve got to vote for Lamb Of God. Randy’s even more brutal than Phil, I much prefer Chris Adler’s drumming to Vinnie Paul, and the dual work of Willie Adler and Mark Morton is simply too good for a lone shredder even of Dimebag’s ability to match.

Lamb of God – they took the groove concept from Pantera and elevated it to a whole new level, they are the heirs to Pantera’s throne and im pretty sure will be a lot bigger in the next few yrs.

this is a really tough decision. pantera were fucking gods and set the bar higher than any others before. however Lamb of God are (in my opinion) closer than any other bands yet and as the article says they are better than even good they’re amazing(also the band i happen to be listening to atm)

This is a bit of a silly comparison. You can’t really compare LOG to a band that is defunct and that will never play again. A better question would have been LOG Vs Shadows Fall or Mastodon. At least offer up a band that is current and you can compare each other to.

I’m sure ill upset someone here. The problem with a poll like this is you always get the older fans who are not open to new things. Many people here even say they have not heard LOG but vote pantera anyway. If you want to talk complexity, LOG piss all over pantera. But pantera do have many uber classic metal songs that never fail to fill a floor. But a handful of good songs, hell, even 2 amazing albums do not stand up to Ashes of the Wake, As the Palaces Burn, New American Gospel, Sacrament and Wrath. Plus Killadelphia and Walk with me in hell. Lamb of god. Its the logical choice. They make better music, have not hit their peak and yet already made more. Plus, they have a depth in their two guitarists that Dimebag (Rest his soul) could not achieve.

Just because Pantera influenced Lamb of God doesn’t make them the better band. Pantera were always good but with the death of Dimebag they got even bigger. Lamb of God have achieved a huge amount of success without the death of a member. For talent as well Lamb of God have to win. Phil, Vinnie, Dimebag and Rex are all good but one great guitarist can’t stand against two great ones. While Randy’s vocals have much more power behind them than Phil’s and Chris’s drumming requires much more skill than Vinnie’s to be able to play and write. I loved Pantera for years before knowing who Lamb Of God were but after I heard them Lamb of God are clearly the better band. Oh and Lamb of Dog? You’re hilarious LOMAN.

However, I would argue with ‘Lamb Of God are yet to release a duff album’ – what about Sacrament? I reckon they peaked with Ashes. Sacrament was awful, and Wrath has one or two good songs (In Your Words, Set To Fail), but nothing that can touch Blood of the Scribe, Now You’ve Got Something to Die For, Hourglass, etc etc.

For me, the ultimate LoG setlist would always be Killadelphia. Just opinion, of course.

Skumbo, as you well know there are many subgenres in Metal and Lamb of God and Mastodon are very different. They have certainly taken a less traditional metal approach with Crack the Skye, very distant from their earlier offerings.

I think comparing Mastodon and Lamb of God is a bit like comparing Cannibal Corpse and Opeth, sure they’re both metal but they’re very different, it’s not like for like.

I can’t even believe this question even needs to be asked lamb of god have been lucky in the last 5 years there has no band really to challenge them (at a push killswitch or mastodon although mastodon are more sludgy and less metalcore). When pantera were coming up with C B F H and Vulgar they had metallica at their height, nirvana and the grunge movement and faith no more yet still managed to create music which cannot be touched and rode to the top of the American charts and even still were going when korn and limp were just taking over.

So for me pantera but goddam LOG come close I’m no hater they have achieved so much and without the doubt one of the best metal bands of the century

Lamb of God is flying the flag Pantera raised almost twenty years ago. Without Pantera there is no Lamb of God. Musically they’re very close. However, Pantera has tracks like Hollow, and Suicide Note pt 1 that show a little more diversity. I think Lamb of God is heading that direction with “Reclamation” but for now gotta go Pantera.

It seems the world of metal is backwards nowadays: great bands being underrated, and mediocre bands (like LOG) being read in the same sentence as legends (like Pantera). Pantera had it all – a redefining sound; incredible guitars; the pounding drums; and ofcourse a sound imitated but never duplicated. LOG are just another metal band taking the book of metal, and writing their name on the cover – it’s hardly original…

Pantera also dared to include (some) mild moments in their music. My personal faveourite song by Pantera is Cemetry Gates. Also Pantera contined playing metal when everyone else was playing Grunge.

So its Pantera for me!

Lamb of God may lay claim to being the most CONSISTENTLY good metal band of the modern era but they are yet to reach the giddy heights that Machine Head achieved in the year after The Blackening was released.

For me it has to be Pantera.

Ok, depends what you like, music is subjective like any art form, and all the rest of it, but……is this serious? Errrr……Pantera. LOG are clearly a talented band, and at least they aren’t performing the kind of sh*t that usually passes for metal these days, but i don’t even see it as a contest. Pantera were amazing, especially Dime (RIP) and Anselmo’s amazing voice. LOG are a good band, but basically their music is pretty crap and Blythe’s voice only serves to irritate.

Anyway – Pantera is better!!

Without Pantera there would be no Lamb of God. As sick as LOG is, Pantera put them there.

Regardless of what any shallow “old school” metalhead says, Lamb Of God are definately better than Pantera when it comes to being technical.

However, my vote goes to Pantera for two reasons, their achievements in bringing Groove Metal to the world on a huge level (even though Exhorder invented the style), and the fact they have made some truly iconic songs.

Lamb Of God are amazingly talentled, more technically than Pantera, however Pantera have the edge obviously on their impact they have on people, and Dimebag is a god amongst men.

To clarify, Pantera

lamb of god is a great sound, but they definitely owe their influences to pantera.

Bloody hell…. it can only be Pantera. I’m sitting here now listening to 5 minutes alone & thinking how can LOG be compared to Pantera? There is no comparison. LOG are a good band (though over-rated in my eyes) but Pantera ruled then & still rule now.

Pantera. Nostalgia purposes, i spent my teenage years listening to them and they were one of the first metal bands I got into – Cowboys & Vulgar are something else and i still listen to them both regularly.

Much respect to LoG though. Quality band and as stated above have yet to release a duff album. Definitely another one of my favourites

You simply cannot compare the two. They do not sound alike in any way imaginable. Sure, they both play groove-driven thrash, but they don’t sound alike. Lamb Of God is SO much more brutal, whereas Pantera is more southern-sounding. None of their songs sound alike and none of them have made anything that resembles the other bands sound. LoG never made a song like Walk or Fucking Hostile and Pantera never made a song like Remorse Is For The Dead or Ruin.

Anyone would say that LoG is way more brutal than Pantera. Not everyone thinks thats an advantage.

Personally I think Lamb Of God is way better, but that’s only because I prefer the brutality. Thereby not saying that Pantera sucks. I love southern metal.

Also: Pantera is gonna win this, because they’re fucking LEGENDS!
LoG is still working on becoming one, and I am sure they will succeed some day.

I fooking love both bands! But I would have to choose Pantera…as they’re my favioute band! Although I haven’t seen them live (which is really bad for me to say =[ )…whereas I have LOG…they remain in my life as the greatest band I have ever heard! I love everything about them…as you can probably tell from my name ha-ha. ‘Far Beyond Driven’ favioute album of all time! ‘Ashes of The Wake’ favioute LOG album by far.

I thought that Wrath was way overrated, definitely not as good as sacrament. Although LOG songs are good, they lack that Dimebag genius guitarring and rely too heavelly on the vocals.

Man I understand where your coming from Repka but honestly it takes those TWO guitar players to be faster then Dime and more inovative. Pantera made something that at the time was lost in grunge and alternative music, they diagnosed the new decade with the heaviest shit to ever grace the planet, They shot to number 1 booting M.J.s ass off the charts, for more than a few consecutive weeks. and as far as vocalist are concerned your taking a more death metal oriented vocalization opposed to a more rough hardcore sound. Phil anselmo WANTED you to hear his words he didnt want you to question a damn thing, when you pop any pantera cd in you know, and you dont begin to doubt, that the power, domination, and pure barbaric-ferocious intensity that IS Pantera,

Anyone can write really vulgar lyrics to a song but whats that matter if you cant understand them, shit Phil made sure that if you couldnt understand what he was sayin you could just open the booklet and see for yourself.

Dont get me wrong LOG is fucking brutality to the extreme, but when it comes down to it I have to vote for Pantera just because every part of the song whether instrumental or vocal’s is key, Pantera was a machine which, when all the parts came together couldnt even begin to be touched, they opened the path to Extreme Metal, they got heavier with each record, they didnt need nipple cutouts (COF), or tits (Manson) to shock ppl, they already had it accomplished with pure power.

Sorry for making such a long comment, I just love talking Metal with ppl lol Musics life man, and there wouldnt be a world without it. But hey if i could vote both ways i would long live the TITANS man Pantera and Lamb of God, FOREVER STRONGER THEN ALL
