Comment: Halls Of Fame Or Halls Of Shame?
We asked the metal media whether they thought bands being inducted into ‘halls of fame’ means anything, and who to…
Why stop at Hall of Fames, why not include award ceremonies too? Sorry to the Metal Hammer folks as I know they’re genuine guys and gals, but the Brits? The Ivor Novellos? Who cares?! Music shouldn’t be about who comes first (or last), it should be about the moment. The passion. The feeling you get in the pit of your stomach, not a stupid popularity contest aimed at getting people to text in to rack up the £££. Who cares about who has won what – I guarantee no-one remembers who was given a MBE or who won last year’s Best Brit Newcomer.

What SHOULD a heavy metal hall of fame contain? In a perfect world, it would consist of the bands that contributed to the foundation of heavy metal. Bands like Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Motohead, Venom, Mercyful Fate, Metallica, Slayer, etc. Its purpose would be to have a place where bands are formally recognized, acknowledged, and archived for forthcoming generations who know nothing of the history of metal. A book, website, or well done documentary can do as good as a job but once it’s out of print, offline, or no longer available, nothing is left. A physical space containing memorabilia offers something that would attract a lot of people. Most all sports have their halls of fame, yet the closest us metalheads have is the Rock’n'Roll hall of fame which is not even strictly rock with a number of non-rock acts inducted (complete list here). So when discussing why we despise halls of fame, or why it is meaningless to have Metallica or Priest in the Rock’n'Roll hall of fame alongside such ‘rocking’ and ‘prestigious’ acts as the Bee Gees and Madonna, what our real gripe is, as always, so few people really understand metal. It cannot and should not be lumped in with rock/pop shite. It makes as much sense to induct Morbid Angel into the jazz hall of fame. Either give metal its own hall or fuck off.

I am probably going to be one of the few who respond in a positive light to this, and I’ll reference the Rock’n'Roll Hall of Fame specifically. The RnR HOF was designed to honor those with a lasting legacy in rock music. Every artist inducted thus far probably deserves to be in there. As far as metal is concerned though, it has been criminally overlooked as a genre, but still, the HOF is there to give credit to those who deserve it. These types of honours are reserved more for the artists themselves, and I doubt any metal musician would scoff at the opportunity to be recognized. After all, Metal Hammer has its own awards show coming up soon, right?

Halls of Fame are narcissistic in nature but in the same breath, they do serve a bit of a purpose as a means of preserving ways of life for cultural purposes, at the very least nostalgia. What I have an itch about is the fact these ‘halls’ of valor, be it for sports, music, military or even armpit farting champions is the committee process. What gives these peacocks the right to decide who’s worthy of inclusion in their glee club or not? That being said, I thought the RNR Hall of Fame far exceeded my expectations for its valuable presentation of rock history from the country, blues and R&B roots straight on through. However, a big raspberry is in order for the gross lack of metal that should’ve appeared between the punk and grunge exhibits. Wait a minute, did I just use the word ‘exhibit?’ Arrrrrrgh!!!

Isn’t it just the establishment finally giving you a pat on the back and saying “you’re in”? Wasn’t metal all about sticking it to the Man, waving two fingers in his face and big “fuck-yous” all ’round? I guess it’s nice that you get recognition and respect for being around for so long but does it really matter, especially to our scene? Do you really think Lemmy would give a fuck if he never got into the H.O.F.? ‘Course not, he’d be more pissed at not having a night of free booze. Ginger from The Wildhearts is probably one of the greatest songwriters the UK has ever produced but I doubt that he loses sleep over not winning the Ivor Novello yet. And there are a million more bands that we all admire and respect that you just know are never going to win so much as a meat raffle let alone a Brit or a Grammy (Robb Flynn, take a bow…) but does that make them any less in our opinion? Fuck no!! Nice work Metallica, props to you guys and well done, but when you mention the bands name to the people that matter the most i.e. your loyal fans the first thing they’ll think of will probably be something like “Whiplash” and not “Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees – 2009″.
What is the “Rock n Roll” Hall of Fame,Where is “Rock n Roll” Hall of Fame ?
Where it is tells you what it is….. a music white elephant !
Surely the fans tell bands how muched they’re loved !
Led Zeppelin could have reformed after 27 years and sold out in every country the world over, time and time again. That shows how much theyre still loved !The “Rock n Roll” Hall of Fame is merely a American church of “Rock n Roll” once again it never takes in the whole world just the bits whoever judges for induction.
Its overblown nonsence !
I had to give pause and reflect over my comments considering MH was generous in giving recognition to my blogsite, which of course is its own committee process. So at the risk of hypocrisy, I will stand by my words and take any flack, yet I think the emotion I was trying to convey had to do with the selection of people or groups to be represented in a hall of fame versus independent recognition of achievement in a different forum. The Grammy Awards always piss me off since Voivod should’ve been granted one ages ago if its process was to recognize groundbreakers and music pioneering. Somewhere along the line I have to reconcile that high-profile awards programs and hall of fames have the potential for fallacies depending on whose interests are really being served.
On the other hand, I have no qualms whatsoever about iindependent ndustry awards whose purpose is to celebrate whatever their field of interest may be.
Like all such ‘recognition’ whether it’s a ‘Hall of Fame’ or an award, it’s just industry bods giving themselves a pat on the back for being such great, important people. All that really matters is how many units a band shifts and how many people show up to see them play live. The rest of it is just self-congratulatory nonsense. Randy Blythe summed it up nicely in the ‘Walk With Me in Hell’ DVD….”What the fck’s a Grammy anyway?”. And the dude didn’t attend the ceremony. Now that’s Proper Metal.
yeah great stuff d.randall blythe. He knows how to ’stick it to the man’. we’re behind you.
I’m with EvilG.
Give metal it’s own hall!
this is sweet
The Rock ‘N Roll hall of fame is a double edged sword.

I agree. Music can be so many things to so many different people it’s hard to care who gets “Hall of Fame” recognition.
