Desertfest: 11 Bands You Need To See This Weekend
In case you’ve been sitting under a rock in California for the past few months, Desertfest 2012 takes over Camden Town in London this weekend! Stretching over three venues and with over 50 bands playing, it’s going to be a God damn motherfucking stoner-doom-sludge-psychedelic mashup.
We’ll hopefully be seeing you at the Metal Hammer Desertfest Saturday Afterparty, but in the mean time, here are 11 (yeah, 11, and what?) bands that you should definitely be watching out for this weekend…
NAME: ORANGE GOBLIN
WHO THEY ARE: Heavy metal mob Orange Goblin say that “Heavy Metal is not just about music: it’s a way of life, a motivating mind-set, a positive force and an inspirational belief system.”… these guys take their metal very fucking seriously. And rightly so, after being a permanent fixture on the British metal circuit for over 16 years, and in the words of our very own Dom Lawson these guys are “Consistently one of the greatest live bands the UK has produced in recent decades!”
After releasing their seventh studio album A Eulogy for the Damned on Candlelight Records earlier this year, Orange Goblin are set to kick off their European tour headlining at Desertfest on Saturday at the Underworld. Playing alongside metal legends Metallica, Slayer, Motorhead and Motley Crue at this year’s Sonisphere, Spain and Sweden Rock Festival, these guys are definitely not to be missed.
CATCH THEM: Headlining the Underworld, Sat 7th April 21.00–22.15.
NAME: KARMA TO BURN
FROM: WEST VIRGINIA, USA
WHO THEY ARE: American stoner metal band Karma To Burn have rocked with the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Disturbed and Korn at last year’s Hellfest and Download festivals. K2B’s grungy instrumental desert metal has featured vocals from former Kyuss singer John Garcia and more recently Daniel Davies of Year Long Disaster. The band has collaborated closely with Year Long Disaster, touring Europe with them in 2010, and K2B’s most recent release, Appalachian Incantation, features vocals from YLD frontman Davies once again.
CATCH THEM: Headlining the Underworld, Friday 6th April 21.00-22.15
NAME: TRIPPY WICKED (Trippy Wicked & the Cosmic Children of the Knight)
FROM: ST ALBANS, HERTS
WHO THEY ARE: Playing Desertfest as part of their European tour with Stone Axe, Trippy Wicked are a sleazy, doomy blues three piece with a stoner metal edge. Due to release their new album Going Home via Superhot Records on 30th April, Trippy Wicked will be filling Camden’s Purple Turtle with sexy stoner riffs.
CATCH THEM: At the Purple Turtle, Friday 6th April 17.00-17.30.
WHO THEY ARE: Astrohenge are a heavy metal four-piece from London who achieve riff-rumbling psychedelic metal with no bass player, and do it very well indeed. Rarely venturing out of London, these guys were described by Metal Hammer’s John Doran as “one of the UK’s best-kept secrets”. They prefer to describe themselves as “Chas and Dave jamming with Morbid Angel”.
CATCH THEM: At the Black Heart, Friday 6th April 19.50–20.30.
WHO THEY ARE: Bluesy sludge band Slabdragger have been likened to Torche, Sleep and Electric Wizard. Having shared the stage with the likes of Iron Witch and Turbonegro, this Croydon three-piece will be rocking the Purple Turtle into a doom metal frenzy before the Metal Hammer After Party on Saturday 7th April.
CATCH THEM: The Purple Turtle, Saturday 7th April 22.55–23.30.
NAME: CHURCH OF MISERY
FROM: TOKYO, JAPAN
WHO THEY ARE: After playing Tuksa Open Air Metal Festival in Finland last year with massive metal bands such as Meshuggah, Killing Joke and Agnostic Front, these Sabbath-inspired, Japanese metal-heads are set to rock the Underworld at Desertfest on Saturday.
CATCH THEM: The Underworld, Saturday 7th April 19.45-20.30.
NAME: VALIENT THORR
FROM: NORTH CAROLINA, USA
WHO THEY ARE: Valient Thorr bring thrashing metal with a dose of punk rock to Desertfest’s Underworld stage. With four albums under their belt, the band has toured with Fu Manchu, Eagles of Death metal and NOFX. This summer Valient Thorr are set to rock the Free Press Summer Fest in Houston Texas along with Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson! Yes, really.
CATCH THEM: The Underworld, Saturday 7th April 17.30-18.10.
NAME: GENTLEMANS PISTOLS
WHO THEY ARE: Gentlemans Pistols graced the Metal Hammer stage with their riff-heavy rock sounds at High Voltage Festival in 2011 and have also played with Orange Goblin and The Answer. The Leeds four-piece have been likened to Kiss, MC5, Thin Lizzy and UFO, and released their album At Her Majesty’s Pleasure last year on Rise Above Records.
CATCH THEM: At the Underworld, Sunday 8th April 17.50-18.30.
NAME: CORROSION OF CONFORMITY
FROM: NORTH CAROLINA, USA
WHO THEY ARE: After the release of their first album in seven years (self-titled Corrosion of Conformity was released in February on Candlelight Records) these Californian heavyweights headline the final day of Desertfest and will bring the metal madness to a shuddering, riff-fuelled close.
CATCH THEM: Headlining The Underworld, Sunday 8th April 21.45-23.00.
FROM: BOSTON, USA
WHO THEY ARE: Mashing together sleaze, groove metal and psychedelic rock, Roadsaw have been touring for over 18 years and have shared stages with Orange Goblin, Queens Of The Stone Age, Fu Manchu and Nebula. Signed to Smallstone Records, Roadsaw released their self-titled album in 2011, their sixth effort of catchy, blues-heavy rock with a heavy dose of shredding and groove.
CATCH THEM: At the Underworld, Saturday 7th April 15.40-16.10.
FROM: LONDON, UK
WHO THEY ARE: Imagine Kyuss, The Melvins and Isis smoking one big fat joint together and this is what you’d get. Veterans of the stoner circuit, having supported legends such as Brant Bjork & the Bros and Nebula, these boys shit out massive riffs that will be sure to make your balls tingle. Even if you don’t have balls.
CATCH THEM: At the Purple Turtle, Sunday 8th April 17.10-17.40.
Sounds pretty fucking good to us. See you down the front.
