DevilDriver also have the small matter of releasing their monolithic new record, ‘Pray For Villains’, on July 13th. So, without further ado, we bring you our track-by-track guide to the stunning new record from DevilDriver!
‘Pray For Villains’
The line “they pray for villains when their heroes let them down!” is set to become a mosh-pit mantra. A punishing opening riff and double-bass drums open up the track with devastating effect and a shift in time signature half-way through the track goes to show that there is technical proficiency to match the band’s unquestionable power.
‘Pure Sincerity’
A mid-tempo stomp with an incredible rhythm to it. Off-kilter drums are the order of the day here as the band’s shift into power-groove territory hits new heights. Some seriously dance-worthy shit is going on all over ‘Pure Sincerity’ and the chug that kicks in at the song’s bridge is an absolute monster.
‘Fate Stepped In’
The first track to break the 5 minute mark. Up to this point, everything has been balls-to-the-wall and anvil-heavy and this one’s no different. Even on this track, there’s only a let up for about 30-seconds for a keyboard/acoustic guitar passage here and then it’s back to the neck-snapping. An out-and-out rocker that’s built for one of the band’s trademark stadium-sized circle-pits.
‘Back With A Vengeance’
Opening with a huge wah-lead lead guitar line, this is arguably the track where DevilDriver truly nail groove-metal like never before. ‘Back With A Vengeance’ might even be destined to be DevilDriver’s ‘Redneck’. The chorus is absolutely huge and recalls vintage White Zombie, the solo rips and this is one is destined to become huge in the clubs.
‘I’ve Been Sober’
An ambient lead guitar line is backed by some mountainous tom-toms that build and build before unleashing a massive hulking, palm-muted riff. Again, the band unleash a great chorus. Dez has really upped his game on this album when it comes to catchy hooks. Less aggressive than Lamb Of God but no less heavy, DevilDriver are combining catchy-vocals with out-and-out brutality in a way that eclipses all of their previous work. That’s no mean feat!
‘Resurrection Blvd.’
Lots of tapping going on with the lead-guitar on this one. Slower in pace than anything else on the record, the main hook of “isn’t it hard, living on Resurrection Blvd.” is a fist-pumping beast. It becomes clear at this point that DevilDriver haven’t tweaked their sound at all on ‘Pray For Villains’, they’ve just kicked everything up a notch and improved the overall quality of their tunes.
‘Forgiveness Is A Six Gun’
Super-fast picking combine with mid-tempo drums to create a great low-end groove. The rhythm section have to take a lot of kudos for the quality of this record, drummer John Boecklin in particular. The rhythms are interesting, the tempo changes are immense and when the band bring it all home, it is fucking devastating.
‘Waiting For November’
Slamming drums over the top of a swirling, crushing riff. One of the most relentless tracks on the record, double-bass drums thud like a motherfucker all of the way through the track and there’s a mammoth beat-down at the track’s climax; the kind yo’ momma warned you about.
‘It’s In The Cards’
Slower in pace but savage in it’s heaviness, ‘It’s In The Cards’ is one of the heaviest tracks on the record in its own unique way. It also features a guitar solo that’s epic in it’s pacing and build-up.
‘Another Night In London’
Featuring an opening riff that sounds almost Southern rock, this is party metal at its finest. “Let’s start a riot/it’s another night in London/let’s start a riot/for the night is still young”, screams Dez. The capital is going to go ape-shit if they play this one the next time they’re in town! Nice ode to the Sex Pistols if you listen carefully too.
‘Bitter Pill’
Featuring one of the more playful riffs on the record, there’s still a decent stomp to this one. If you check out ‘Guardian’s Of Asgaard’ from Amon Amarth’s ‘Twilight Of The Thunder Gods’, that’s the territory that we’re talking about on this one. Heavy yet melodic.
‘Teach Me to Whisper’
Triumphant in its tone, ‘Teach Me To Whisper’ features smoking fret-work and endless levels of energy. There’s literally no letting up here, a barrage of attitude and crunching rhythms. There’s some really nice Eastern flavour in some of the guitar work here too.
‘I See Belief’
Taking thrash and hardcore and wrapping it up in the trademark DevilDriver style, it’s one hell of an end to the record. Frantic pace, unrelenting power and a whole shitload of attitude, I See Belief is a killer end to a killer record.
DevilDriver will release ‘Pray For Villains’ on July 13th. Get excited.
