Devin Townsend: “I Want To Make My Next Record Sound Like Nickelback”
You can double-take now, but Devin Townsend has assured us that the next part of his four-album concept record will sound like Nickelback. Oh and he also talks about Chad Kroeger’s penis. We shit you not.
Speaking exclusively to Metal Hammer, Devin Townsend had the following to say about the next installment of his concept record:
“I’m from Vancouver and Nickelback are from Vancouver and he (Chad Kroeger) came up to the studio. I just look at Nickelback and I think “how are 40 million people buying this? What does it say about Canada? What does it say about all of this shit!?”
“I had a real think about this and I thought that I would go out and buy the record. Maybe it’s some sort of high-art that I’m not getting. So I got it and it sounds phenomenal! Mutt Lange did it and Randy Staub did it, it sounds incredible, but every song is about his penis!”
“Sex sells and I understand that but I started getting a real dark energy off of the record. It’s like “we’re making money and this is how you make money”, so this next record, I want to make it sound like the Nickelback record and I want to have chorus’s like the Nickelback record, but I want the lyrics to be about infinity and quantum mechanics.”
“The whole point of this is to say “sure, that sells but is it the aesthetics that sell or is it you singing about your penis because if it’s you singing about your penis, then I’m going to know right away”. If it’s about the penis then I’m not going to sell shit, but if it’s about the sound then maybe I’ll sell tonnes of it!”

lol, this man is genius for a reason. i think if he really did a nickelback style album it would bring real meaning to cock-rock. but having already listened to Ki i cant wait for the next 3 instalments. Devin is a legend!
shame. But if he wants to make music that sells sofas thats up to him. Waste of a good voice tho’.

He’s a strange bugger, the Devin. Wasn’t he actually sectioned in a hospital for a while with really deep rooted psyche problems? I’m pretty sure I read that years ago. A walking example of the saying “insanity breeds genius” if ever there was one. I’d like to see him work with Ginger from The Wildhearts again.

Will be interesting to see how this turns out though, I mean if he really does make his next album sound similair to Nickelback/Theory Of A Dead Man/Seether/*insert other squillion-selling in america rock band* and it sells like hotcakes, then it just goes to show how much foolish american people care about radio friendly fodder than truly diverse and technically incredible music! :L
no matter what, if he sings on it the album will sound like crap
It won’t sell nearly as much as Nickelback. First he’s not on a major label, so nobody will buy him airplay. Second he’s not good-looking enought so MTV won’t air his video.
People don’t buy Nickelback records because of the music or lyrics about penises. They buy them because they’re told to.

He actually says something different, namely that the concept of that particular album will be about the formula of that kind of music (Nickelback).
Quote: “a pop song about how ridicilous pop songs are”.
So that’s not quite the same then infinity and quantum mechanics, that’s probably one of the other 3 records in a series of 4 from which KI is the first one.

Devin knows exactly what he’s doing, and he said that Addicted is gonna be heavier than Ki. Though it would interesting if Devin sings about his own penis. Or Chad’s for that matter. Oh, that’ll be wierd…
