Greetings, fellow residents of planet internet. I hope and trust you are happy and well and looking forward to a delightful spring and a joyous summer packed with indecently entertaining outdoor events. I know I am. And that’s because, my friends, I am vaguely normal and not the kind of oxygen-robbing spunkweasel that moans about festival line-ups three seconds after they’ve been announced. You can hardly have failed to notice the glorious news that Download will be hosting the triumphant return to UK festival land of Aerosmith, Rage Against The Machine and AC/DC this coming June.
Fantastic news for rock and metal fans, of course, and a pretty damn impressive coup for that nice Mr. Copping and his comrades at Download HQ. Yes, Steven Tyler will be there (we are told…and have no particular reason to believe otherwise, frankly) and so will I, with a big stupid grin on my face and a half-guzzled pint of slightly warm cider in my meaty fist.
It’s going to be awesome, isn’t it? Yes, Dom, it fucking well is.
But no. Apparently it’s not going to be awesome.
Apparently, according to a generation of squealing, shit-fringed arseclowns, reared on free mp3s and a ridiculous and distorted view of what the word “metal” means, a Download line-up headlined by two of the biggest rock bands of all time and one of the most influential bands of the last two decades is, in fact, a bit shit. Amazing. I’m so glad that someone pointed this out to me, because otherwise I might have gone along to Download and had a good time by mistake.
Never mind that the rest of the line-up is getting more exciting by the minute – with one or two exceptions, naturally, but then no one in their right mind expects a festival bill to be 100 per cent up their own narrow alley, do they? Really? Fuck me…people are idiots! – or that last year’s Download was so mind-shaggingly awesome that people should just buy tickets for this one anyway and not even worry about who’s playing…no, this moronic and genitally-challenged ragbag of fuckwits that poison the internet every day with their witless ranting have once again decreed that white is black and black is white and really fantastic music is a pile of festering cack.
Personally, I didn’t even realise it was possible not to like AC/DC or Aerosmith.Maybe it’s the onset of Alzheimer’s, the cumulative impact of 20 years of booze or even the onset of Alzheimer’s, but I’ve always regarded both bands to be an essential part of the musical world and subculture that I proudly belong to.
I realise that neither AC/DC or Aerosmith are strictly heavy metal bands in the traditional sense, but then why the fuck should they be? People who only listen to one style of music are invariably boring arseholes with nothing remotely interesting to contribute to the world. Metal has always been a broad church, encompassing a diverse and far-reaching spectrum of sounds and styles that stretches from Bon Jovi to Agoraphobic Nosebleed and back again, and both AC/DC and Aerosmith are more than qualified to be regarded as integral components in the metal machine. Both have back catalogues worth killing for (if you don’t own the first five Aerosmith albums then you suck, by the way), both have so many hits that they are unlikely to be able to play them all, even in a two-hour headlining set, and both are so obviously awesome that it’s causing me actual physical pain to just think about the kind of swivel-eyed, sweaty-palmed, will-never-get-laid-in-a-million-years twat-hawks that have had the audacity to moan about them playing at Download.
Seriously…what the fuck is that all about? Are you on drugs? Did you fight in Vietnam and are suffering from deranged hallucinations as a result of post-traumatic stress? Are you just a bit fucking stupid? It’s the latter, isn’t it? Dear oh fucking dear.
Then there’s the incessant bleating of 9-year-old “metal fans” on the Metal Hammer website, as every last band that we have the nerve to write about are roundly denounced as “not metal”. Well, listen up, you fucking doughnuts…I’m more metal than any of you will ever be. My penis is actually made of aluminium. FACT. But even ignoring my hideous deformities, I will not be engaged in debate with some dribbling turdpouch who thinks that he (or, indeed, she) has access to some hard and fast set of rules about what is or isn’t metal.
I love Maiden, Machine Head, Megadeth and King Diamond as much as anyone on Odin’s war-torn planet, but that doesn’t mean that I’m going to decry Bring Me The Horizon as “not metal”. They’re a metal band. Get over it. You might not like what they do – and, be honest, it’s the haircuts that bother you, isn’t it? – but if you know anything about music, you will be compelled to recognise that their music is, in one form or another, metal. The same goes for Avenged Sevenfold. Obviously metal. Shut the fuck up. The same goes for Steel Panther. Oh god, why are we even discussing this? Shut the fuck up. The same goes for Bullet For My Valentine. Oh yes, it really does. Even though Matt Tuck is now going around saying that he has always considered his band to be “a hard rock band with metal influences” – and if that’s the case, Matt, why have you spent the last four years wearing a suspiciously new-looking sleeveless Metallica shirt, while throwing the horns and sticking your tongue out? Were you, perhaps, trying to win over the Foo Fighters’ fan base? – it’s not really a matter of opinion that Bullet, no matter how sterile and half-arsed I find most of their music to be, are a heavy metal band. If you don’t like ‘em, don’t listen to ‘em. It’s not fucking hard. But don’t say they’re “not metal”.
Like most people, I got into metal because it was a subculture that seemed to eschew all that trendy, fashionable nonsense in favour of a come-one-come-all policy…dress up if you want, be a scruffy pillock like me if you prefer, but basically live and let live, anything goes, crank it up, down a few beers and act like a bell-end until the police turn up. Simple enough. Once people start shouting the odds in defence of some non-existent principle that is, in essence, exactly the kind of poser bullshit that we would condemn fans of other styles of music for…well, I don’t know about you, but I’d rather not have anything to do with it. But fortunately, I was here first. So the next person to moan about Aerosmith not being metal can fuck off. Go on. I’m waiting. And yes, I have got all day.
This whole tawdry phenomenon is, as you may well be imagining as you wave your fist at your monitor in a fit of rage, symptomatic of the way that the internet has enabled every last hopeless cretin on the planet to harbour the delusion that access to a computer is somehow a guarantee that any and all views should be taken seriously. Not so, my pointless friends, not so. All it means is that you are all free to talk rubbish in public and expose yourself as the fraudulent, flatulent, skin-wasting mounds of twitching arse-rubble that you plainly are. There’s one in the eye for freedom of information! Woo-hoo!

Fact of the matter is, AC/DC did a MASSIVE stadium tour just last year, multiple nights in all corners of the UK, so I saw them there, and as awesome as they are, I’m in no hurry to see them again.
RATM are awesome yes, but the fact that they are playing a MASSIVE free gig just a week before headlining download makes me feel its a bit of a wasted headliner slot.
As for Aerosmith, they havnt released anything for the past 10 years, and nothing good for the past 20. And from what I’ve heard the past few UK shows have been abysmal, and theres no smoke without fire as far as the Frontman issues go.
The undercard for Download is quite good this year, but most of it just isn’t for me, besides maybe STP, and Megadeth. I’ve seen TCV and they played ALL their material, including an unreleased song, so I don’t see their set being much of an improvement, and the rest of the undercard barely interests me so far. It could improve over time, but at the moment I’m really not that fussed about the lineup.
Long story short, whilst I agree there are big bands on there, most I’m not that fussed about (personal taste and seen recently or for whatever reason), hence I’m really not that bothered about the lineup thus far.

Very well put: it’s always struck me as odd how well-versed in musicology 15 year-old emo kids purport themselves to be :s They’re undoubtedly the same people who complain when a band only plays 3 or 4 dates on a UK tour: stop being a spoilt brat and be thankful that they come here at all (there are many metal fans all over the world who NEVER get to see their favourite bands after all). If you have to get the train to see them I’d be thankful, you cunt: if it’s that big a deal then you’re obviously not really that fussed about the band. Personally, I live near Bath and, apart from the occasional gig in nearby Bristol, very few bands come round my way but I’m trekking all the way up to Manchester to see KISS in May.

I don’t think that the Download line up is anything special. RATM are playing a free gig a week before so waste of a headliner really (like said above somewhere).
Also Motorhead are really far down on the bill atm (even below Stone Sour?!) Also TCV subbing to AC/DC? Another waste of a high slot i reckon. They’ve had 1 album which i thought was pretty good (but others hated) but just because of the members they deserve a sub headline slot? ^o)

There will always be people who complain about the lineup for a festival no matter who is playing, but this years Download is the best they’ve ever got and I can’t wait. Some of the comments I read on here complaining were hilarious, the best one was when some tool kept saying Download was a metal festival and there should be only metal bands, in big capital letters. Er, no dickhead, it’s a rock festival, it has a predominantely metal audience but it’s a rock festival, Andy Copping himself says that.

And if I hear one more person say about Aerosmith not releasing anything in 10yrs so why should they headline im gonna scream!!! Dont they get it, its the 30th Anniversary!! Plus if Slayer or Metallica stopped for 10years then headlined download, would you complain? NO!! So in the words of Dom, “Shut the fuck up!!” Download is more than just music. Its about laying in the field with a cider, listening to the music and soaking up the atmosphere.

And while im most looking forward to Lamb Of God at the moment, i feel i owe it to my roots. If i hadnt have grown up listening to these bands, i probably wouldnt have the musical taste i have now.

Shouldn’t festivals be about having fun, watching some bands you love and seeing some you may not be too familiar with? hanging out with like-minded people and not having to worry about chavs/townies/whatever?
I know they used to be… and they should be again! you don’t like the lineup? don’t go, but if you DO go, you should check bands like Aerosmith out, while you may not know every song, you’ll get caught up in the show I can guarantee! I for one can’t wait for it!!

When ‘DC headlined in ‘91 and Aerosmith in ‘94, I was there, with Bellz on, to see different bands… not bothering to watch the headliners …. After Metallica and Pantera, respectively nothing could or would top my day.
Why? Because my arse had been kicked so hard that nothing would sooth it. Blown away … will AC/DC blow away 50,000 at Donny? Hmm … unlikely.
I have a VAST metal collection containing no AC/DC releases from the past decade probably 15yrs. True metal? I’ll fight you for it .. and win.

Line-ups to most festivals now are becoming ‘classic’ or ‘legendary’ … ergo ‘we couldnt find any modern replacements’ and ’shit’.
Im waiting for THAT BAND to come along and revolutionise things a little and prevent the Maiden / CD / Guns / Jovi cycle that has become omnipresent and impotent.

Aside from the reference to Alzheimer’s, good blog and so true as well, perticularly the point concerning Bring Me the Horizon (I don’t like their music particularly, but the haircuts don’t help it either). Although I said in a previous article Aerosmith weren’t anything special, that’s because they’re not one of my favourite bands. If I had the chance to see them I would, but they’re not a band I would rush out to buy tickets for if they came over here on tour.
If I could, I would go to Download, because the lineup is shaping up to be brilliant. Who wouldn’t wanna see AC/DC, Megadeth, RATM, the aforementioned Aerosmith, Lamb of God and 5FDP amongst others? However, because a) it happens in the middle of my exams, b) I only have enough money for one festival this year and c) Iron Maiden are my favourite band of all time, I’ll be down the front for Sonisphere this year.

I love the DC & Raga but Aerosmith live in the UK play way too many ballads if they bring over a Stateside setlist then it’ll be awesome but having witnessed Wembley & Hyde Park I’m not so fussed about. What gets me with all the currect festivals is why bother with so many bands playing 30 mins sets etc and having Motorhead & Megadeth so low down the bill when they’ll still pull more than everything above but the headliners. Andy never learns if it his him who decides the order. MOR was so much better cause a band would get a decent slot of 50mins onwards not the short ass sets we get these days.

Just because theyre big doesn’t mean i have to like them. I like ACDC but Aerosmith have always seemed average to me. Im not too fond of Megadeth or Anthrax for that matter, but that doesnt mean i think theyre shit, it means that i dont like them. I respect that theyre big, but you might as well just insult us all for not liking lady gaga or boyzone or whatever, because theyre just as famous, but because theyre not metal, you probably wouldnt like them would you. this is about this year’s festivals, and as i regard iron maiden as the greatest band of all time, and ive wanted to see rammstein for years, it makes sense for me to choose sonisphere as i can only afford one big festival
as ive said several times before,wherever people go, they’ll have a great time!

Well, I can see the humour in Dom’s words and agree with his point. I don’t own the first five Aerosmith albums but I don’t seriously think that Dom Lawson thinks I suck because of it (he may well think it for other reasons

Anyway, the general subject of the rant is to point out that as soon as people see something that doesn’t automatically fit into their own remit then they’re online moaning about it and assuming that their opininon is right. If the organisers of Download were to cater for everybody’s taste then it would go on for weeks.
I personally am not the world’s biggest Aerosmith fan, but I appreciate them and know most of the hits, so if I was at Download and they came on, I’m sure I’d be singing along like a loon with everybody else. I wouldn’t cry about it and go and sit in the corner.
If you don’t like the line-up, don’t go. Simple as that.

I’m someone who loves the supposed “non-metal” bands like Avenged (favourite band), Bullet, Steel Panther, Slipknot, and anyone else you can think of. But i also love the more traditional metal bands like Metallica, Megadeth, System, Slayer, etc.
Just thought i’d throw it out there that there are some young people (I’m only 20) that can appreciate ALL forms of metal in it’s true glory. It’s just the ignorant cunts who say otherwise.
While i don’t like Aerosmith or ACDC that much, i can appreciate why theyre considered metal (as they should be) and that they warrant a headline slot for Download

This year has one of the best Download lineups ever. Just because they are not all metal doesn’t mean it will suck. It’s clear that the Download organisers have learned from their near fatal mistake of having My Chemical Romance as a headliner.

I don’t see how anyone could complain about the whole line-up, I think its incredible (except for 30 Seconds To Mars) but like Dom stated, “…no one in their right mind expects a festival bill to be 100 per cent up their own narrow alley…”.
The talent this year is un-freakin believable, i would’ve thought there’d be no complaints other than Megadeth needing a higher fucking slot. Also, Lamb Of God are gonna fucking be there and they WILL tear shit up.
Anyway, if you don’t like the headliners, just give them a shot. I wasn’t going to go see Lostprophets in 2008, (it was either that or get ready for a mock R.S exam), so i stayed and i really enjoyed it. Whats to say people who don’t like Aerosmith won’t enjoy it? You won’t know unless you give them a decent chance live.
By the way, why do people always think the people less likely to be “anti-metal” are 15/16? It pisses me off a bit (me being 16 -i have every record made by the big four, except compilations, Risk and St Anger, and not being brought up on free mp3s etc…). and nearly all of Maidens discography.
