Download 2011: The Damned Things, Asking Alexandria, Hyro Da Hero
Bandied about over the weekend by festival-goers as: ‘That band with Scott Ian from Anthrax and Keith Buckley from Every Time I Die…’, The Damned Things came onstage to a large crowd that filled up most of the area around the Hammer-hosted second stage. Ripping through songs from their (as-yet) only album ‘Ironiclast’, most fans are eager to catch a glimpse of the super group and before playing ‘Black Heart’ they proclaimed: “If you weren’t horny before you will be in about 3 and a half minutes.”
Asking Alexandria took to the Pepsi Max stage to a full tent of people and when cramming themselves into the thick of it doesn’t work they spill outside and attempt to peer into the darkness of the tent to see the young band from York. A steady and constant stream of crowd surfers tumbled over the rails and excitedly pushed their way around for another go as the band launched into firm favourite ‘The Final Episode’. The mothers of some of the younger teens nervously clung to the inside of the tent at the back and attempted to avoid the hoards of sweaty head banging fans.
As the rain started to pour, Hyro Da Hero took to the Pepsi Max stage to an eager and unsuspecting crowd. Some only stumbled into to shelter from the rain but ended up joining in when commanded to scream ‘fuck you’ to the person next to them. The middle finger wielding hip hop front man is accompanied by a heavy rock soundtrack including Daniel Anderson from Washington-based two-piece Idiot Pilot. Overall a high energy set that proves hip hop and metal can go hand in hand and that it is something to get excited about.
