Download 2012 Review: Steel Panther, Tenacious D
Understandably there were a few raised eyebrows when Steel Panther were booked to play the Main Stage above Trivium, but the crowd response says it all. Steel Panther sound fucking brilliant and manage to entertain the masses by using up every inch of Metallica’s snake pit walkway. It’s amazing to think it was just a matter of three years since this unknown hair metal band played an earlier slot on one of the smaller stages. Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor joins them for Death To All But Metal which is greeted by the biggest cheers of the day so far.
Tenacious D’s shtick isn’t a million miles away from Panther’s, but Jack Black and Kyle Gass are definitely a step down from the LA LOLsters. To be fair, they are funny, they have a few good songs (including an epic Tribute, obvs), and there’s some spectacular showy moments (confetti and a giant inflatable phoenix cock anyone?), but it’s difficult to justify a slot this big on a bill this incredible when they only really have about four songs everyone wants to hear.
