Download Festival Organizer Andy Copping has spoken to Metal Hammer about last year’s controversial headliners and the festival’s latest move within the Donington Park site.

Metal Hammer spoke to exclusively to Download Festival Organizer Andy Copping about last year’s controversial headliners.

“It’s a rock festival. It’s not a metal festival like Wacken or Bloodstock.  We’re a rock/alternative festival and does that mean I’ll be booking Franz Ferdinand or The Killers or the Arctic Monkeys or Kasabian? Not in a million years. We can put on 30 Seconds To Mars and Lostprophets and we can put on Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Metallica. If you don’t like My Chemical Romance, go and watch Machine Head headline the 2nd stage, for example.”

“We’re trying to be everything under the rock banner. You’ve heard me talk (in this interview) about Def Leppard, ZZ Top, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Motley Crue, Faith No More. It’s all very varied.”

Copping also spoke revealed to us that the festival will not be taking place with the same lay-out as last year’s festival. When asked about whether the festival would be moving back to the lay-out of the first few years, Copping replied: “No. The site that’s in the race track is not going to happen. We’ve located another site that’s within Donington Park. We moved in 2008 and we’re moving again to an even better place to give us an increased capacity. We had to come out of the old circuit because they are preparing for Formula 1. We’re moving to another part of the site that’s going to be far, far better and it gives us an increased capacity as well.”

Over the past few days, we have heard that Faith No More and Limp Bizkit reunions could happen at Download, as well as the massively exciting news that both Manowar, Motley Crue and Def Leppard could play this year’s festival.

Classic Rock have revealed that Heaven And Hell are NOT yet confirmed for the festival while Lamb Of God seem to have self-confirmed and The Prodigy are also heavily rumoured to be involved at this year’s Download.

there seems to be a compulsion to find old classic bands of late with download’s organisers. after going to download every year since its start, kiss was the last straw for me and we (my group) quit download last year and went to germany’s rock im park instead for the superior (heavier) lineup, had a superb time. if def leppard or zz top or manowar or marilyn manson or motley crue headline then we’ll all do the same again. shame that more ppl can’t do the same as i’m sure they would love to.

keep it heavy with a few bits of rock in the mix and download will be perfect.

praying killswitch engage are going to be at download in a high position (2 at least). rammstein would be awesome on its own. slipknot can headline imo. shame metallica can’t make download.

Big Truck

I’m glad the site is moving. Just hope there isnt a mile & a half hike from the campsite to the arena this time!

Damn right.
Those in Black Camp weren’t so bad as their exit to the arena was further along the track but we were in Blue Camp when I went last year!

Took about 15 minutes walk either way (N)

It wasn’t the walk that bothered me, it was the shit arena. Having been to every downbload it was a bit shocking just how bad the arena was! So glad the site is moving!

has no one noticed the fact that he just said “you could go watch machine head headline the 2nd stage”, now i think that was a comment with just a little bit of a hint in there……FUCK. YES.

Matty – it does beg the question… why the fuck would MH be doing headlining the 2nd stage when they headlined the whole of fucking Wacken a couple of years ago? I’ve nothing against MCR (I’m going to get slaughtered for that!) but MH are far better live, as well as much more metal.

But as the man said – Download’s apparently not a metal festival, it’s a rock one. Which you can tell by the fact it’s sponsored by an arsewipe rag like Kerrang! instead of a decent magazine like MH.
