etidalbum_90Come and check out your essential track-by-track guide to the new album from Every Time I Die, ‘New Junk Aesthetic’.

Roman Holiday – A sludgy, heavyweight opener. “We are the death of the party, we are the life of the funeral” rages Keith Buckley. Does anyone spit cooler lyrics than this bloke? We’re not sure that they do. Lumbering, doomy and heavy as hell, it’s like a post-hardcore Black Sabbath. Completely bad ass.

The Marvelous Slut – From one extreme to another, ‘New Junk Aesthetic’ goes from sludgy to all out apocalyptic in an instant. We’ve said before that it sounds like a pneumatic drill to the eyeball and the call and answer session Buckley exchanges with Dillinger Escape Plan man Greg Puciato is pure, inspired insanity.

Who Invented The Russian Soldier? – Constantly mixing up the pace, this punk as fuck assault sees ETID at their very best. Buzzsaw guitars, venomous, raging vocals and effortlessly cool guitar licks aplenty. Everything that’s great about this band in 2:45. Yes!

Wanderlust – A swinging and swaying intro gives way to the first taster of the Southern groove element that dominated ‘The Big Dirty’. Wanderlust sticks with the feel of that record but just ups the speed and aggression. Good to see ETID are still carrying the bite of the party animal. Mega vocal hooks half-way through this one.

For the Record – The hardest-hitting track thus far. You can almost picture Buckley, blood dripping from his face, as he savages his way through this one. One thing’s for certain, these songs are going to rip your head from your shoulders live. ETID promised this would be their heaviest outing yet – they don’t disappoint.

White Smoke – What an opening riff! Imagine Black Flag trying to play a riff that sounds like The Bronx and you’re in the right ball park. Track of the album thus far? Probably. Seriously, how good has 2009 been for albums? It’s sounding like yet another album of the year contender from where we’re sat!

Turtles All The Way Down – An attempt at psychadelia? Are you serious? A trippy opening half a minute leads into a riff that plays like a hardcore Aerosmith. Seriously, this motherfucker’s got some serious strutting going on.

Organ Grinder – This album is relentless! There’s no letting up for air and this is another pummelling rocker. Constantly brutal, Keith rages “just because you haven’t figured it out, doesn’t mean it won’t happen to you”. What he’s talking about we’re not quite sure, but it sounds menacing as fuck.

Host Disorder – Hand claps to the sound of punk rock blood and thunder? You had better believe it! “Is everyone comfortable? Are you having a good time”, screams Buckley over the top of the soundtrack to a riot. Hells yeah, my man!

After One Quarter Of A Revolution – No, no, no, THIS is the heaviest track on the record. 2:04 of complete bedlam. Even when it stops to pause for air with a riff that’s cooler than a polar bear sitting in a fridge in the Antarctic, it’s still brutal.

The Sweet Life – “Ain’t nothing going to slow me down, ain’t nothing going to slow me down” screams Buckley before trading licks with The Bronx’s Matt Caughtran. It’s a match made in punk rock heaven. Holy shit, we’ve got a live one here! On first listen, this may well be the finest work of Every Time I Die’s career. That’s a career that has contained nothing but kick-ass albums. The last minute of this record is unbelievable.

2009 has been ridiculous for the sheer volume of great albums that have been released. ‘New Junk Aesthetic’ is another one to add to the ever-growing list.

These guys are probably one of the most entertaining and relentless live bands out there just now!!

A friend has heard the album and said, quote “Everyone else is playing for second best album of the year now”.

I hope it really is that good, and then of course, the tour!

I really like Every Time I Die. Personally, don’t know yet whether it’ll have the beating of Mastodon or Dinosaur Jr. for album of the year, but by the sounds of things, this album is gonna tear some heads off.

Mike House
