Evile’s Michael Alexander: RIP
Metal Hammer are incredibly saddened to have to report the death of Evile’s bassist, Michael Alexander.
Michael had complained of feeling unwell following Sunday’s performance in Oulu, Sweden. He suddenly collapsed the next morning, Monday, 5th October 2009 at the Theatra Hus club in Lulea. He was immediately rushed to local Sunderby Hospital but passed away from a suspected blood clot. He was 32.
Evile members Matt Drake, Ol Drake and Ben Carter have released the following statement:
“This is so hard to find the words to express fully how we feel. We can’t believe or accept what’s happened. One minute we’re talking to our buddy, Mike, the next minute we can never speak to him again.
There’s so many things rushing through our heads that we want to say, do and feel. We half expect him to come round the corner and call us ‘dickheads’. We can’t get our heads around it.
It upsets us so much that he was away from his family when this happened, although knowing Mike, we’re at least glad he was on tour doing what he loves.
We’re lost for words. We all miss him so much already. He was such a headstrong, genuinely nice guy who loved music and his family. We’ve got so many brilliant memories with him.
Our hearts go out to his daughter, family and friends at this tragic, difficult time.
Mike is much loved and is sorely missed.
Rest in peace, brother.”
On behalf of everyone at Hammer, we extend our deepest condolences to Mike’s friends, family, and everyone connected with Evile during this very difficult time.
If you would like to leave a message of sympathy for Evile, please do so in our comments section, and we will be sure that they are passed onto the band.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Mike’s family, friends and Evile at this difficult time.
I have had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Mike on numerous occasions and he always had time to chat. He would however pop up unexpectedly always with that smile on his face and every time remembering who I was. That was Mike. The last Time we met was 2 weeks ago at the album launch party at the Isslington Bar. As I came up the escalator, he was at the top. He grinned and came over straight away. He was a likable person with a great sense of humour and iIam sure I will join a long list of people who will miss him. Farewell Mike

This is so sad and unexpected. Every time I saw him I used to mock him that the Maple Leafs sucked, just Ice hockey banter, but thats how i’ll remember him.
It was nice meeting you and the rest of the guys at the show in Bergen, Norway (Kick ass show btw). Thanks for the autograph, RIP Michael Alexander.
R.I.P. Mike and many condolences to your loved ones
Hey, I just heard this…fuck, I was so looking forward to seeing you lads support Amon Amarth in Dublin after missing your December gig here- I saw you support Machine Head here two years ago, I thought you were amazing and I was lucky enough to talk to you all at it including Michael. I think you’re a fantastic band and “Enter The Grave” has status on my CD shelf next to Master Of Puppets. Whether you continue or not is up to yourselves but if you stopped it would rob metal of even more. RIP
The World just lost an amazing bassit, he will be missed very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! R.I.P Mike
\m/!
R.I.P Mike deepest condolences to his family and the band
Shocking news.
RIP Mike.
That’s such bad news. I saw Evile on the Megadeth tour and loved the fact that Michael was rockin out and headbanging away whilst still keeping the rhythm going. My condolenscences to his family, friends and bandmates.
R.I.P. Mike Alexander. This is just terrible.
And BTW, Oulu is a city in Finland, not in Sweden.
I can’t believe it dude! You were such a genuine nice bloke and it’s thanks to you my little sister managed to get her Sepultura picture signed! Thankyou my friend. Keep Thrashin’ on the otherside with Cliff and Dime! R.I.P

Great band, great bassist!

R.I.P. Mike… this just isn’t right.
I was shocked when I heard this. I only just got round to buying Evile’s awesome album yesterday. I cranked it loud in Mike’s honour. He’ll be sorely missed
a sad loss, much sympathy to his family and the rest of the band,
R.I.P. Mike
I have to admit, not a huge fan of Evile, not really listened to them that much; on the other hand, never heard a bad word about them and they have to be admired for bringing thrash back to the British scene…much respect.
So it is so very sad to hear of the loss of such a young and obviously talented guy; my deepest condolences to Mike’s family, friends and anyone whose life was in anyway touched by this footsoldier of Metal.
R.I.P. brother!!
Enjoy the big mosh pit in the sky, say hello to Dime and the gang.
It is both tragic and saddening that another great thrash bassist has been taken from us. His contribution to Evile will certainly not be forgotten by me or any of Evile’s strong followers. Hopefully he’s up there playing with Cliff Burton as we speak. He will be greatly missed.
rock on dude
this kind of shit shouldnt happen
im sure hes thrashin with cliff burton right now
the world has lost a great guy
This is so surreal, I really cannot believe this, 32 is no age!
I first saw Evile supporting Megadeth in February last year at Brixton, Mike was all over the place and very entertaining to watch as well as listen to.
I hope you’ve found peace and my heart goes out to your family.
I cannot even begin to imagine how you guys are feeling right now. Having had the pleasure of meeting you all before, I can vouch for what a genuinely top guy Mike was. I am sorry for your loss and hope you and all who were close to him can find solace soon.
How sad. Condolences to all. Mike and Evile are such a cheerful bunch on stage. I hope they all carry on in his honour.
Evile are my favourite band and i’m now in a state of shock. RIP to you brother, i hope your slappin’ that bass up in the skies.
Tadhg, Wexford, Ireland
I’m an Evile fan and have been following them since I first saw the support Megadeth and I was due to see them again on their tour with Amon Amarth. I am truely saddened and shocked by the news of Mikes passing. My thoughts are with his family and Matt, Ol and Ben. Mike enjoy jamming with Cliff Burton and Hendrix. RIP Dude xxx
RIP mike, cant believe only met him in dublin in april, great guy and brilliant bass player, you are goin to be sadly missed…….keep on trashin
Stunned. Easily one of the best English metal bands out there. Saw them support Megadeth and have been a huge fan ever since. Mike you brought the thunder on stage dude, rest in piece. Love and support to the rest of the band and MIke’s family during this difficult time. This is a massive loss for metal.
such a sad loss to the metal universe RIP Mike
To Mike’s family, friends and the guys in Evile, my deepest sympathy goes to all of you.
I had the pleasure of meeting Matt after an Evile gig in Northampton 2 years ago and thought he was a funny, down-to-earth, top bloke – just like the rest of the band.
I’ve had a soft spot for Evile ever since – it was great to see the good guys getting the success they deserve.
The brilliant new album is a fitting tribute to a talented & lovely man. I know it will catapult Evile to an even bigger standing.
God bless you Mike & thanks for the memories. RIP.
I had the great pleasure of knowing Mike and the guys since the Metal Militia days back home in Huddersfield, been following them all the way through their career. Mike was the nicest guy you could ever wish to meet and remained down to earth, a guy you could have a drink with anytime. I find it hard to believe I was just having a few beers with my old mate Mike just before they played Islington Academy 12 days ago, and here we are talking about him in the past tense already. R.I.P. Big Mike
I was told about this by my BF who plays in a local Sheffield band Opinicus. Sheffield being not so far from Huddersfield I think Adam has even more empathy that they were a local band doing good. I was so sorry to hear about Michael – 32 is no age and with so much potential to go far. Adam has put a dedication on his FB page to Michael and we have had lots of people also expression their best wishes to his friends. family and to the band. May his memory live thru is music and may he never be forgotton. Ax
Sadly missed dude. you where a pleasure to watch
32 is to young to lose someone this amazing

Just to correct a detail…Oulu is located in Finland, not Sweden.
r.i.p Michael he was truly london/huddersfeild’s answer to cliff burton.
Tragic news. He and the rest of the band were so down to earth and approachable when I saw them play in Cork and at Hammerfest

Have only just found out about this and am in complete shock.
Saw Evile about two years ago in the Liverpool Barfly (supporting Municipal Waste) and have been a fan ever since.
It’s just not what’s supposed to happen. My thought’s are with his family and friends.
Rest In Peace mate.
RIP Mike.
Evile are an amazing band, and his passing will be a huge loss to UK metal.
All the best to Evile, and to all those connected with Mike.
I first got to know mike before Evile hit the big-time as a differently named outfit. My band used to perform alongside them back a few years ago and after the show I usually have the odd natter with most of them including mike who was just the king.
Being a bassist myself he would share my equipment when they were due to perform and would rock the whole night and produce a unique spectacle of a show!
I was due to book tickets locally to see the band and their new venture in action but now the reality is shattered.
He was a very easy going guy who charmed everyone with his style of playing and share laughter and praise towards each other after each other’s performances.
My mate and I send our sincere condolenses to the family and band of a dear friend and musician.
We will send a further tribute onto our Metal Show on Phoenix FM.
RIP Michael Alexander.
Evile is one of the bands I really want to see live, and this came as no less than a shock. My deepest sympathies to the band and, not to mention, his family. Mike will definitely be missed. I just hate myself for not seeing Evile while he was alive.
But look at the bright side. He’s in a better place now, and probably already jamming with guys like Randy Rhoads, Jimi Hendrix and Cliff Burton. I would just like the band to not lose faith because of this. Keep going, keep doing what you love. Why? Because Mike would’ve wanted you to.
May he rest in peace, and God bless his soul.
So sorry that he died. Feel especially sorry for you guys and his family.
Rest in Peace,
Charlie
Very sad and a shock, he will be missed.
Rest In Peace brother.
Rest In Peace buddy, we will miss you
Damn, I was working as a stagehand at the Oulu gig and saw the man. He didn’t look that well after the gig but I just thought he had the flu or something. It’s a shame.
So sad, RIP Mike. You’ll be forever in our hearts
RIP man, i am greatly saddened by this as i have only just started listeing to you, and found just what a great band you are. my condolences

Cant believe it. Got into Evile just a week ago & shocked by this news. Without a doubt he will be missed. His bass sounded great on the excellent Infected Nation album. My best wishes go to Exile during this time.
Evile kicked ass, sorry to hear Mike is gone. I hope they carry on with his legacy.

I’ve had the privilege of seeing Evile play three times, first supporting Megadeth at Brixton Academy, London Underworld in April and Islington Academy 25/09, impeccable, unforgettable nights all, was looking forward to seeing them with Amon Amarth and Entombed, despite their support slot status and me not knowing the other two bands that well.
Most sincere condolences to Mike’s family, Matt, Ol and Ben, true champions of British Thrash Metal.

I’ve only just recently learned of the band Evile, and I can say, just from listening, that Michael must have been extremely proud of what he was doing.
I want to extend my condolences to his fellow bandmates. It’s always a shattering moment when we lose a close friend, and, like you said, he went out doing what he loved to do.
I will grieve for his loss, and he won’t be forgotten.
