Check out our final Iron Maiden interview with Adrian Smith about the band’s forthcoming movie, ‘Iron Maiden: Flight 666′.

Iron Maiden will release their movie ‘Iron Maiden: Flight 666′ on Iron Maiden day, April 21st. Click here to see what the other members of Iron Maiden had to say about the movie!

Metal Hammer: You’ve seen the film and it’s mantra seems to be that Iron Maiden are  a band that people can believe in”. Is that something that’s very important?

Adrian Smith: ”I think it’s been an important part of the band because of the philosophy behind the band. Day to day, you just…I’m a guitarist, I write songs, I play on stage, but obviously there’s a bigger picture that develops a life of its own. You just do what you do. It’s important that people see that we’re a real band because there’s so much bullshit in music now.”

Metal Hammer: Traditionally you have the rep of being one of the more private members of the band…how did you feel about being followed around by a film crew?

Adrian: “Ironically, out of everybody I probably got on with the film crew really well. I knew the guys from before and I just like them as people. I thought their intentions were good. Again, the stuff they’ve done…they really love their metal as well…and the stuff I’ve seen them do was really from the heart and it was interesting and it was intelligent and I thought they’d do a good job, so I felt quite open to it. A couple of guys in the band, understandably, felt a bit guarded about it, so I was surprised when I saw the film that I was featured quite a lot. That makes a change!”

Metal Hammer: You come across as one of the major spokespeople for the band.

Adrian: “I was just at ease being myself. A lot of times doing interviews I’ll be a bit guarded. On this tour there’s a lot of attention and sometimes I don’t wanna know, but other times I get the urge to walk off the plane in front of the camera crew in just me socks and winkle pickers and do something insane, dressed in a Borat swimming costume or something just to freak people out. I don’t know…I just want an extreme reaction. It’s hard to be yourself.”

Metal Hammer: Did you have any objectives that you wanted the film to achieve.

Adrian: “Well, I think it’s probably the most revealing to date but it’s still…there’s only so far you can go without blowing the lid off everything and there’d be nothing left to find out. Things are a little bit like that anyway. When I grew up, Deep Purple were a complete mystery and I used to imagine all kinds of things that they’d get up to. Now the guys in your favourite band write their diaries and tell you what they do every day, what they had for breakfast. So, there’s good and band, for revealing stuff, giving stuff…but overall it’s quite entertaining and it does give you some insight into travelling to and from shows and that kind of stuff. I remember watching Let It Be, and they were breaking up and it was quite intense and you could see the needle there, but this is more of a romp through South America.”

‘Iron Maiden: Flight 666′ is released worldwide on official Iron Maiden Day – April 21st.
