Come on in for the Hammer family’s favourite moments from this weekend’s Sonisphere festival!
Alexander Milas, editor.
1. Black Sabbath.
2. Alice In Chains casting their spell over tens of thousands of people under a setting sun. Too beautiful for words. Oh, and Check My Brain? Tune!
3. The mighty John Bush having his name chanted after proving to thousands of people that his first, best destiny is on stage with Anthrax.
4. Mastodon balancing the beautiful with the utterly sublime and proving why they’re one of the best bands playing today.
5. Lamb Of God and Machine Head’s ability to summon pits the size of planets .
6. Being mistaken for Pete Steele by Nicko McBrain. He was mortified, I was flattered. Nicko rules.
Caren Gibson, deputy editor.
1. Machine fucking Head!
2. Machine fucking Head!

4. Machine fucking Head!
5. Machine fucking Head!
James Gill, editor at large.
1. Cancer Bats playing The Beastie Boys’ ‘Sabotage’.
2. Killing Joke playing ‘Love Like Blood’
3. Interviewing Ronnie James Dio again – I’m proud to walk to the earth with this man.
4. Hearing that Benji, the good natured Skindred frontman, accidentally started a scrap with the guest area doorman, who got him a headlock.
5. Architects guitarist Tom Searle being mean to Heaven’s Basement’s Jonny Rocker about the bands clothes. Pot? Kettle?
Terry Bezer, online editor.
1. Metallica playing Dyer’s Eve for the first time ever in the UK. It’s the reason I have no throat left whatsoever.
2. Machine Head. Dear lord, we thought it would be good when we spoke about it on last week’s podcast but even we weren’t prepared for Struck A Nerve!!!!
3. Airbourne reminding everyone just how great rock n’ roll can make you feel (even when it’s pissing down).
4. William DuVall. The man is a star and Alice In Cahins are so back it’s unbelievable.
5. Thunder playing ‘Love Walked In’ for the last time. THAT was a moment.
Lewis Somerscales, deputy art editor.
1. Machine Fuckin’ Head letting freedom ring with a shotgun blast.
2. Alice In Chains, just being awesome, and meeting William DuVall after.
3. Metallica, fireworks, flames, and One. Epic Win!
4. Watching Mastodon and clocking a Hammerfest inflatable Hammer in the crowd.
5. Vanessa missing it all.
Tom Stabb, card-carrying member of the Metal Hammer podcast fan club.

3. Airbourne going on airbourne, guitar solo on top of the rig in the pissing rain
4. Bjorn Again’s sweet ass Enter Sandman cover
5. Lamb of God being way, way, way more awesome than I’d ever given them credit for.

1) Machine F’n Head – from start to finish, it was amazing to be a part of. Seeing my girlfriend’s face as we were surrounded by three converging circle-pits was hillarious too…
2) Black Sabbath – and at the appropriate time on Saturday evening, the heaven’s opened. Rightly so. Epic win!
3) Lamb of OH MY God – what more can be said about this band??? We need another club tour over here, soon!!!!!!
4) Rolo Tomassi – tearing up the tent, and tearing everyone inside a new one.
5) Seeing a 7 or 8 y/o girl on her dad’s shoulders during Bjorn Again’s cover of ‘Enter Sandman’, singing every word and with both hands sporting devil horns! I have photographic evidence \m/ \m/
An overall great weekend – pity the transport left a lot to be desired!
1) Machine head. An amazing set,so glad they came back, my favourite part mainly though was halo.
2) Metallica – Creeping death
3) The big fuck off wall of death lamb of god had
4) Avenged sevenfold – eternal rest/chaptor 4 medley
5)Sylosis? Where the fuck did they come from, such a great set.
Also beez i would agree with you about dyers eve…if lars could play it right.
hmm interesting that no-one is talking about Nine Inch Nails given that 74% of people said they would rock hardest!?
1) Machine Head – Halo
2) Sylosis!? – went to see them just for the sake of avoiding skindred and was sucked into a series of fucking amazing pits and
NIN were boring as bat shit…. What should’ve ideally been a hard-rockin’ farewell was instead an inane, self-indulgent set. One song simply blended into the other and it couldn’t end soon enough.
What a frakkin’ blast! Machine Head removing Knebworth from the face of the planet to Metallica just rocking out BIG time to Killing Joke making me the happiest bloke in the place with ‘Love Like Blood’ AND ‘Eighties’ to Anthrax taking over Saturday.
Same time next year then?!
My best bits here

5. Bjorn Again – enter Sandman – so funny
4. Lamb of God wall of death to’ Black Label’
3. Machine Head, especially the 21 circle pits for Struck I nerve ( I think I was in 3 pits at the same time)
2. Anthrax – Bring The Noise, having seen them twice already this tour did not expect them to play that in a million years
1. DYER’S EVE
Well said Horseguts-Halo-I hope you weren’t in the carzy Caren!
Trent isn’t metal and doesn’t care to be. This is what he posted on NIN.com
about the setlist.
We played a purposely quiet, intimate set. I figured it would either enrage or baffle the metal audience… but to our amazement it went over great!
Really fun set to play in that environment
1) Skindred-Benji Webb is simply an incredible frontman and the crowd loved every minute of them
2)Machine Head-Doing it for the fans and playing the best set I’ve seen them do so far
3)Metallica!
4)Limp Bizkit.Fuck it…they were great. Wes Borlands costume was really cool as ever.
5)Anthrax playing Bring the Noise and starting the most brutal circle pits of the weekend.
5 highlights for me are
1. metallica
2. airbournes singer on the rig
3. skindreds sesame street ending
4. machine fucking head
5. lamb of god
6 Highlights (but you can swap the order around any fucking which way)
1. NIN
2. Anthrax
3. Metallica
4. Machine fucking Head
5. Lamb of God
6. Airbourne’s arial antics
1. Mastodon-beautiful playing
2. Kirk Hammitt playing like it was 1985
3. Dyers Eve and Hit the Lights of course
4. Headbanging in the middle of a circle pitt during MH
5. Having a snooze during NIN and finally getting out of the fricking carpark. I got home to Exeter at 0800!
Best bit? Seeing my pix of Joel from Airbourne at the top of the rig published on the Metal Hammer website – class!!
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeees goooooooooooood!
