Heavy Metal World Cup: First Round Results! Quarter-Final Draw!
Who went through and who went out in the first round of the Heavy Metal World Cup? Find out inside!
16 bands compete this week on BBC 6 Music to be crowned the ultimate metal band of all time and yesterday, 16 became 8.
Results were determined in a best of three fashion. One point came courtesy of the 6 Music audience, one vote was given to Sian Lllewellyn of Classic Rock magazine and one vote came from the 6 Music rock/metal experts.
Here are the results of the first round:
Slayer 3-0 Van Halen
Judas Priest 2-0 Def Leppard (audience vote was a draw)
Deep Purple 1-2 Anthrax (Purple vote from Sian, Anthrax voted through by 6 Music and audience)
Iron Maiden 3-0 UFO
Black Sabbath 3-0 Metallica
Rainbow 0-2 Saxon (audience vote was a draw)
Motorhead 3-0 Led Zeppelin
Kiss 1-2 AC/DC (voted by 6 music team, voted by Sian and the audience)
Sabbath trounce Metallica, AC/DC sneak an extra-time winner past Kiss (Paul Stanley was in goal and he’s got weak wrists) and Motorhead pull off the shock of the round by pummeling Led Zeppelin.

Its ashame Zeppelin or Van Halen didnt go through tbh,, but then again they arent strictly metal i guess.
My predictions for the next round:
Judas Priest to beat Slayer
Maiden to beat Anthrax, as great as Anthrax are its really like putting a Premier League team against a bottom half Championship team.
Sabbath i think will beat Saxon it’ll be close though
I cant decide between Acca Dacca and Motorhead though XD,, i love both bands haha

I thought (as the public don’t really have a say) It was just another (rigged) thing where Guns N’ Roses would be crowned “the best metal band ever” once again. Luckily it isn’t.
Interesting if it ends up Maiden vs Sabbath.
Honestly though, it HAS to be Maiden.
If metallica drew any other band except possibly maiden they’d have been through.
I bet the folk at Classic Rock mag are pissed that Led Zep got whitewashed by Lemmy & Co – as they seem to have a permanent hard on for them fella’s.

whoever said metal is an umbrella term for everything from classic rock to hair to death is probably trapped in the 70s when bands like zeppelin were considered heavy.
my theory (this means ive been thinking, always dangerous) is that the term ‘metal’ should describe a bands overrall sound. most of led zeppelin, van halen, ac/dc songs wouldnt be classed as metal, whereas iron maiden are a metal band with a few commercial songs such as number of the beast which could be considered hard rock.
mind u i remember reading something where iommi described sabbath’s early sound as ‘heavy jazz’ so maybe its all bollocks!
