In Bod We Trust
“It’s already gone platinum over here,” says bassist Henkka Seppälä. “But that only means we’ve sold about 10,000 copies! And although it is a big hit sales-wise, it never gets played on the radio, because it’s too heavy. We’re not the only Finnish metal band to have a big hit single. Stratovarius, Sentenced and Nightwish have also had their share.”
So, The Children Of Bodom – who take their name from a local lake – aren’t Finland’s answer to Boyzone?
“Oh, no!” he hoots, thinking the question was serious. “We are not pop stars! We are far too heavy for the mainstream. But the good news is that metal’s on the rise in our country.”
As it is all over the world, fella. COB will release their new album, ‘Follow The Reaper’, on January 29 through Nuclear Blast, and while ‘Hate Me!’ will get immediate attention, the band’s third album is full of their most melodic yet intense metal yet.
Adds Seppälä: “I think we’ve left our black metal roots behind and moved more into a power metal direction. Our producer, Peter Tantgren, has really helped us. We toured with his band Hypocrisy last year, and got on so well with him that we believed he could get us the sound we
wanted – and it’s worked. He made the whole studio experience so
relaxing for us.”
The Children start a European tour shortly, co-headlining with Germany’s Primal Fear. Any chance of a visit here, then?
“It is being talked about very seriously,” Henkka says. “I understand that there might be a London show. I certainly hope so.”
So do we!
