In the latest of our exclusive chats with Iron Maiden , axe-slinger Dave Murray talks to us about the upcoming movie, ‘Iron Maiden: Flight 666′.

‘Iron Maiden: Flight 666′ is released worldwide on official Iron Maiden Day – April 21st.

Metal Hammer: What did you think of the movie?

Dave Murray: ”I think it really captures the spirit behind the scenes of this tour with Iron Maiden. A lot of fans who are coming to see the show, they see all the lights and the set and everything that’s been put together, so the film gives an insight into the inner working and what goes on behind the scenes. It’s the flipside of playing. The a-side is coming to see the show and the glamour. The other side…there’s a lot of hard work that goes into putting this together. So you get to see all that. It’s warts ‘n’ all. I was looking at the bigger picture and I think it really captured the spirit. The whole concept is great, to say that Iron Maiden fans see the other side…”

Metal Hammer: Were you wary of the camera crew being around?

Dave: “Over the years there’s always been people around, filming a lot of shows, so after the initial thing you forget they’re there. They were a nice bunch of lads too, so it wasn’t right in your face. In your peripheral vision, okay, there might be someone there, but it didn’t…maybe sometimes if they’re there people start hamming it up and that’s a natural human response. That’s what you do, just have a laugh. Also there’s a side to it where they’ll show the quieter moments. In the end, they were there, a nice bunch of guys…”

Metal Hammer: Was there anything you wanted them to capture…one particular thing?

Dave: “No, actually, personally it was the whole thing. Just the whole workings. The essence of the live show and the 5;1 surround sound…that whole vibe, it was great to see it in that kind of environment. But I never thought ‘I really want them to capture this’. They captured all the good stuff and maybe they got some stuff that was unusual too.”

Metal Hammer: The live footage is amazing. One song from each city…

Dave: “Absolutely. It’s in 5.1 surround sound, so you actually feel like you’re right in there. It’s very unique.”
