This isn’t actually good news for me because they will most likely not play Bloodstock now they are doing Sonisphere. Last year BOA had Europe instead of Iron Maiden \m/

We all knew this was going to happen jst glad this is it being made official, and i remember when sonisphere was first announced metallica was signed onto it to headline it for the nxt 4 years but if that means headlining it in another country who knows, but my money is on rammestein being the 2nd headliner. So Download get your finger out and at least announce a headliner cause who knows who they are getting cause by the looks of it to have a chance of standing up to some of the festivals already announced they have to get Ac/DC but i cant see it happening my money is on Bon Jovi, Limp Bizkit and dare i say it Creed for Download

In all reality sonisphere don’t have much choice to copy the download headliners as it’s the same one’s every other year.

Also as the sonisphere people are the one’s who originally did the monsters of rock festival technically download have copied them by having metallica, iron maiden, and def leapard as head liners.

What’s all this about “Sonisphere copying Download”? Who cares!? Count yourselves lucky that we have two brilliant rock festivals! What more do you want? Plus Maiden for Sonisphere is possibly the best news I’ve heard all year!

on the sonisphere website it gave a little clue saying metallica could be there next year after the festival ended

we’ve all known that they would, but its nice to (just about) have it comfirmed. I seriously hope its Muse, Foos or Tool for t’other headliner, and @stu. There arn’t that many bands which are headline-worthy. Ofcourse they will be repeated. Like ‘tallica have played Download, R&L and Sonisphere in recent years. This shit happens.

Then Maiden will play Marley Park next year.

Btw, CRIP, there is NO chance of Maiden headlining Download if they headline Sonisphere – Sonisphere state that their headliners are exclusive. Besides, most bands will only ever headline one major British festival a year anyway. I remember Metallica trying to headline Download in 2003 when Limp Bizkit pulled out and not being allowed due to headlining Reading and Leeds.

If this happens, Sonisphere may just pip Download to being my summer festival destination of 2010..!

Yeh there’s no doubt it’ll be Maiden. They did Download in 07, thats not a big enough gap for a band to return to headline. Metallica did 04 and 06 but that was down to the 04 set being shorter because of Lars getting ill.

Maiden and Muse for Sonis, I’m most definitely there.

AC/DC have confirmed that they are playing a UK festival. People seem to be forgetting that this could be Download or Sonisphere. I remember hype about ‘DC playing Sonisphere last year and it turned out to be Linkin Park instead. Lets hope that Stuart makes the right choice this year.

DANTHRAX – stop talking $hit! I’ve seen around 200 bands live and consider Maiden to be 1 of, if not THE best live band I’ve ever seen.

Oh and answer me this cock-rot!…If Maiden are so $hit, WHY are they still going after 30+ years, selling out arenas within minutes!?

OmErTa, you make a good point about festivals being a bad place to see a band, but the flipside is that festivals are the best place to see many bands. Another plus is the sets are shorter, so for the bands you don’t like, the suffering is (hopefully) short-lived (of course, the flipside is you don’t get long sets from the bands you like, either, but still…..). They’re also fun to go to with a big group of people. My only advice to someone who is going to a festival and maybe seeing a specific band for the first time is to not necessarily judge a band’s live show based on their festival set.

I’ll save up money from work, i’ve got a Download ticket for a christmas present too.

I reckon Maiden wouldn’t do Download though cos they did it in 07, so three years difference? Very unlikely.

The best news i can hope for is Van Halen, Aerosmith, AC/DC and some other big names for Download. But if Maiden are doing sonipshere, then definatly going!

metallica headlined download with only a 2 year gap and played 3 of the first 4 years so i dont think its a factor for maiden to not headline there. maybe they just want to play at knebworth, maybe theyve been offered more money, who knows?

METALLICA’s official web site has been updated with the following message:

“We are now entering the June portion of the ‘random tour announcement’ derby and today’s installment is one that is particularly exciting for us as we are proud to tell you that we will again be headlining the Sonisphere festival, now embarking upon its second year in existence.

“The first show of the traveling festival will be on June 16 at Bemowo Airport in Warsaw, Poland and joining us are some longtime friends . . . SLAYER, ANTHRAX, and MASTODON!

“Tickets go on sale tomorrow, Thursday, December 10. Go to http://www.sonispherefestivals.com and choose the country you are interested in for more info on how to purchase tickets. All shows are general admission.

“Additional Sonisphere shows will be announced in the next week, and in the meantime you may even want to consider checking back here in a few hours for some more tour updates both in Europe and Latin America (hint, hint).”
