Jeff Walker Talks Carcass At Bloodstock
Carcass frontman Jeff Walker speaks exclusively to Metal Hammer about the state of the band and their appearance at this summer’s Bloodstock.
1. Finally, another UK date…have you been deliberately winding us all up?
Winding you up? You mean the announcement that Damnation COULD have been the last chance to see CARCASS ? NEVER !! I did say “could” – when that was said there were no plans beyond that show – and hey we needed to help them sell tickets – we did insist that the venue moved to a bigger hall so….I’m so SORRY if people are disappointed that we’re still around ha ha !
2. Have the reunion shows been as much fun as you expected?
Yeah, that’s part of the reason that we’re playing more shows this year – the U.S. tour was so enjoyable that before we’d finished Mike and Bill were already talking about going back and playing the cities we missed out…and our work visas run out in August so we have to be quick !
3. Have you been surprised by crowd responses so far?
No, not really – I don’t mean to sound conceited, but we had a good idea of how the Japanese and South Americans would react ! You know we have to feel guilty sometimes – the response at Wacken was fantastic, but it was a lacklustre show for us due to technical issues (ie guitar tech fucking up !)
4. What have the highlights been so far?
The highlights are pretty humble things really, we played Loudpark in Japan to 16,000 along with SLIPKNOT – but that wasn’t the highlight that was the 2 club shows we played afterwards in Osaka and Nagoya – we were pretty much on fire and the crowds were fantastic ! We never learn – the club shows are always the best ! And you know to hear Italians, Argentininians, Chilians singing the riffs was pretty amazing !
5. Why Bloodstock?
They asked (again), this time they said “pretty please” and it’s part of our continuing campaign of playing north of the Watford Gap !
6. Do you have anything special planned for the Bloodstock show?
We haven’t really though about it….all I can say is we didn’t have our complete slide/video show working at Leeds as the laptop caught a virus ! There’s some pretty nasty images that didn’t get shown ! So bring a barf bag!
7. Is there any chance of a proper UK tour before you go your separate ways again?
Never say never….if we hadn’t of been offered Bloodstock we would have definitely tried to fix something up at Brixton Academy with the right bands to sell it out….we’re still playing this by ear to be honest – at the moment we have nothing set in stone after we play Moscow in September…
8. Do you have any musical plans outside of Carcass?
Well the ARCH ENEMY machine has woken up and is starting to roll again so Mike and Daniel (filling in for Ken Owen) are pretty busy, Bill has a new FIREBIRD album coming out on Lee Dorrian’s Rise Above label and he’s currently gigging, and I’m still involved along with Shane Embury and Adrian Erlandsson in BRUJERIA -in fact, I’ve a few shows after these 3 CARCASS dates supporting MAIDEN in Mexico with that band.
