Speaking to ArtistDirect.com, Slayer guitarist Kerry King has said: “That’s the first time ever this is happening. It’s really legendary. It’s groundbreaking. I don’t think people realize how big of a deal it is. Mustaine said something like, “It’s the biggest four metal bands from America,” and I never thought of that. I just think of metal as metal and I thought, “No shit, we are one of the four biggest metal bands in America. That’s pretty cool!”
Sonisphere Knebworth will take place from July 30th – August 1st and will feature performances from Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, The Cult, iggy & The Stooges, Slayer, Anthrax with more to be announced.

To be fair they aren’t the 4 biggest American metal bands, Trivium, Machine Head and Slipknot are all bigger than Anthrax (though not as good!!)

This would have been a much bigger deal 20 years ago but not now. Metallica are still an awesome live act but have gone more down the hard rock route than metal. And certainly not thrash. Slayer are dull to watch, so are Megadeth. And Anthrax are barely even a band anymore since they can’t seem to hold a line-up. (but then again neither can Megadeth)
Don’t get me wrong, I’d still quite like to see this but it’s not as big a deal as it could have been.
And another thing – I’d rather see Testament on this bill than either Megadeth or Anthrax. Much better band than either of them AND an awesome live act!!

its not really a big thing in a festival. in a festival they’re just a bunch of bands who happen to be playing together. if they had their own proper ‘big 4 tour’ in stadiums by themselves with equal time slots and maybe some appearances in each others bands (like king in megadeth) it would be a proper big deal. i really hope they do mk bowl or wembley since i highly doubt metallica would play soni if not headlining.
in terms of album sales metallica are far and away the biggest, dont know how much slayer have sold but obviously a lot. anthrax have sold something like 15 million albums so they are way bigger than trivium and machine head.
but on current popularity yeah anthrax have dropped off big time and lamb of god and as i lay dying are actually 2 of the biggest metal bands in america now.
