Marilyn Manson: “I’m just trying to make it bearable to be alive.”
We spoke to Marilyn Manson on the Rockstar Mayhem tour and he explained how so many people misunderstand his intentions and messages through music. Get the full explosive interview in the latest issue of Metal Hammer!
First Marilyn Manson speaks about the roots of goth, his interest in it, and its subsequent misrepresentation by the mainstream:
“I think that a lot of people don’t realise that goth, and for example Bella Lugosi’s ‘Dead’, is filled with sarcasm. I really vibed with Joy Division and I really identified with Bauhaus and then later with bands like the Cult. I don’t know what you want to identify as goth, but the whole goth aesthetic of dressing in black and all of the trappings that come along with it, I don’t think were ever meant to be anything other than sarcastic and an attempt, in the same ways as punk rock, to fuck with everyone around you. Somewhere along the line, unfortunately around the time that I became more mainstream and became sort of the poster boy for that and Hot Topic popped up, people started to confuse goth with being sincere.”

He then told us about how has been misunderstood by the ill-informed public:
“It doesn’t mean that what I’ve done and what I do isn’t mean with everything I believe in, but the inability to separate sarcasm from meaning something point blank…even when I wrote a song recently called ‘If I Was Your Vampire’ I think sardonic would be a better word because that’s the sophisticated way of saying it. It’s a bitter sarcasm that’s not meant to be funny. I’m not trying to be slap on the knee funny or too esoteric for anybody to understand, I’m just trying, I guess first and foremost, to entertain myself and make it bearable to be alive in a world that you more often than less you feel bitter about. Of course everyone does not like their life, but it doesn’t mean you have to be bitter and sit in the corner wearing black lipstick. That’s not the point; it’s how do you channel it and were do you wanna put it?”

He is like a child, if you keep giving him attention he will keep doing all of this bullshit, you have really wasted page space on this heap of shit, melotramatic who lost the majority of his remaining fanbase on the latest tour which was full of fan disrespect, losts of bullshit involving getting re-make up every song and oxygen.

Finally Manson says something worth reading. I was getting incredibly tired of the press he’s been getting lately. I’ve never been a fan of his, probably because of his mainstream appeal and publicity. I’ve always seen him to be the Eminem of rock. His music hasn’t been goth for many years either. Bout time he spoke about the goth culture and his image with sincerity.
Josh – Couldn’t agree me. Manson should get his face out of that coke pile of his and make a decent record for a change. He’s been garbage since Holywood and losing John 5.

Hey Hammer (and Morat in particular). I just wanted to say i thought the interview with M in this months Hammer was fantastic, both on the part of the interviewer and interviewee. I didnt know what to expect to be honest, in fact i seriously considered skipping it and read the Europe Inquisition instead…but im glad i didnt. Still doesnt make up for a dismal performance at Dowload (for whatever reason) but that was the sort of interview i expected from the MM of old.
Manson just finished the Mayhemfest here in the US headlining with Slayer and Killswitch Engage and Bullet for My Valentine etc. He put on an awesome show.
