Mastodon In Time Magazine’s Top 10 Albums Of 2009

cracktheskye_90You know you’ve created a masterpiece when it reaches this level of public acclaim, right?

Time magazine, the American news magazine that’s basically a US institution, have included Mastodon’s ‘Crack the Skye’ in their top 10 albums of 2009! The album rides high at number 3 in their top 10 albums of the year (a whole 7 places above Lady Gaga), with the magazine describing the album as “sonically unforgettable”. Get the full description here!

In case you were wondering, the number 2 slot was taken by Dirty Projectors (nope, us neither) and number 1 was Brad Paisley. We believe he plays two types of music, country and western.

Hey Beez! You were saying that Crack The Skye wasn’t great the other day…
Just a reminder ;)

I roubdly accept that I’m wrong on this one. Knowing me, the penny will drop in about 2 years or so.

am i the only person who thinks that everything else mastodon have done is alot better

this isn’t a bad album, it’s just there weakest

I agree with you Beez and jack. Just before you played ‘Blood and Thunder’ and you said about playing Mastodon I was going to mute the radio cos I thought you were going to play a track off ‘Crack the Skye’. I gave my copy away on Saturday cos I don’t like it much but I like their others. Nice LoG track off ‘Ashes’.

I agree with Jack. It’s cool, but it sounds way too different to their older stuff and a lot more radio friendly. Plus it sounds way too artsy-fartsy prog-rocky for my liking. Oblivion is pretty cool though.

i agree as well. the new album has some good moments but i just love their early material from Remmission and Lifesblood EP. they were some of the best choices ive made in trying out a new band (when they were released)

There is the same sort of buzz goin around about the new Baroness album at the moment. The blue record is ok but there other stuff is awesome yet only now are people talking them up.

I have a few ideas why this happens every now and then but I don’t want to seem like a bitchy/grumpy internet commenter!

So Merry Xmas and of course ‘up the irons’ for next summer x

wtf are you all on about, sure it’s not their best album but HOT-DAAAAAMN is it awesome,Remission is my personal fave and then it’s BM and then Crack The Skye but i love everything they have done

I like this album a lot, but I also like the older stuff, but to me this article doesn’t seem like it should centre about which of their albums are better. It should be about the fact that they have been recognised as an excellent band by a magazine that is not metal-orientated! I, personally, am just chuffed that a metal band has been given such a prestigious award in a Top 10 populated by ‘mainstream’ bands. It’s kinda like Maiden and the Brits all over again!!

true say bob :D

I feel like the only one who thinks this album isnt actualy that great…. especially compared to Leviathan
