Metallica rocks, but I completely agree. Metallica had like three bad albums out of nine. Megadeth had like one mediocre album… out of eleven, with the twelth looking to be the best so far.

Dom makes some seriously good points. I’m a massive fan of both bands, and I disagree with none of the ten points Dom makes. He has, however, missed the single most important point-

Metallica, when they WERE good, were better. I didn’t see them live “back in t’ day”, and Megadeth may have more top albums, but the reality is that Megadeth only have two albums that are in the same league as the first four Metallica records. Countdown to Extinction, So Far So Good and United Abominations are very, very good records (we’ll agree to disagree on Youthanasia, Dom- that record’s dull), certainly better than the Black Album or Death Magnetic. But in the all-time metal album top ten, only Rust In Peace and Peace Sells have a chance of getting in, but usually only one will. Master Of Puppets and Ride The Lightning will always be in there- usually one sitting at number one and the other in the top five. Kill ‘Em All and …And Justice will probably also make that top ten. Megadeth probably won’t have more than one in the top ten. Why? Those first four Metallica records are better records.

Rust In Peace is a masterpiece, don’t get me wrong. But there are some tracks I always skip- Five Magics is annoying, Poison Was The Cure isn’t great and Dawn Patrol is daft. The first three Metallica albums have two songs that aren’t brilliant- (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth and Damage Inc. The first three Metallica records have less duff songs between them than Megadeth’s best record alone.

And then there are the individual songs. Take a top five songs from each band. Do it for yourself now. Megadeth’s is fairly easy for me- Peace Sells, Holy Wars, Symphony Of Destruction, Tornado of Souls and Sleepwalker. I’m a little bit torn over leaving out Wake Up Dead and Hangar 18, but it wasn’t a hard choice. Metallica are different proposition.

The simple fact is that I can’t draw up a top five Metallica song list. The choices are too hard. One or Fade to Black? Seek And Destroy or Creeping Death? Master Of Puppets or For Whom The Bell Tolls? Hit The Lights or Battery? Enter Sandman or Sanitarium? I can’t do it. Let’s say then that those would be my top ten. I’ve still left out Nothing Else Matters, Metal Militia, Blackened, Harvester of Sorrow and all of the instrumentals- brilliant, brilliant songs all.

And that is where Metallica are the kings- they might have had a five year hot streak they have never recaptured while Megadeth have been a consistantly brilliant band, but in those five years Metallica recorded more brilliant songs than any band has managed in the twenty-one years since. In fact, Metallica’s army of top tunes is only rivalled in the metal world by Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. And that’s what it comes down to.

Do a ‘Best of’ compilation for both bands and see who is better. And nothing else matters. Dom’s ten reasons are all quite correct and I disagree with none of it (except I give each band one less classic record than Dom) but the most important one he ignores- who have the better songs?

Overwhelmingly, Metallica win on that count. I don’t even need to hear Endgame to conclude that- even if every song is of the class of Holy Wars or Peace Sells, they won’t outnumber Metallica’s pantheon of masterpieces.

It’s irrelevant really though. Both are simply brilliant. Nice talking point though.

Oh, and Slayer are great, but they’re not in the same league. Three great albums, lots of pale immitations.

But anyway i haven’t really listened to enough megadeth to comepare the 2. All i can say is i like Megadeths first album more than metallicas, and good mourning/black friday alone makes me like peace sells… more than ride the lightning. After that i’m not 100% sure. But as a whole atm metallica.

I love Megadeth, but it is a matter of opinion and I prefer Metallica.

As you know, Dom, I agree with your arguement. But as we discussed earlier, it isn’t a case of who is ‘better’, as it is a case of who you prefer. People always fall back on the sales arguement (hello Dave) – that Metallica have sold more albums and concert tickets, but then again, the Ford Escort was the best selling car in Britain, but it wasn’t the best car – but Nickelback have sold more singles than either band – go figure? Hetfield is a better vocalist than Mustaine, but Mustaine is a better guitar player, blah blah blah…They’re both great, as are both bands and let’s be thankful we have them both.

I think they’re pretty equal. First four albums by Metallica are fantastic, as are Megadeth’s first five albums. Then came the 90’s. I still love the black album, but its not as good as the 80’s metallica. mustaine came out with a few shitty albums after youthanasia (*cough* risk *cough*), and metallica had their load and reload albums.

but i think both bands have somewhat redeemed themselves with their latest albums. And for those of you who think mustaines vocals suck, that doesn’t matter much as he is the rifflord #1

Middo: I’d think twice before writing that. In my opinion Dave launched Metallica’s career. Just look at the songs he contributed to this band before being sacked. The Four Horsemen, Ride The Lightning, Call Of Ktulu, these are all songs that couldn’t have been possible without him, and I think these are some of the most important songs of their early career.

I’m hearing some whining about Mustaines vocals as well, and I agree to a certain extent. Its not perfect, but does that really matter that much? I think it gives the music a certain ‘charm’ (if you could call it that) and without his instantly recognizable voice, they’d probably just fall through the cracks and would’ve been forgotten.

Both bands have had their ups and downs, made their share of masterpieces and some not-so-very-masterpieces, but they’re still fantastic bands in my eyes.

I also have to agree with those of you who don’t see the point in comparing these two bands. It’s like comparing dream theater to rush just because they’re both sort of in the same genre. If it weren’t for that single link between them, being Dave himself, there wouldn’t be anything to discuss. Some of you mention that Mr. Lawson is simply pointing out facts, and that at the end of the equation, Megadeth prevails. Still, these are all his personal opinions, and doesn’t leave us with actual proof that one is better than the other.

I hate all these people who dislike Megadeth just because they don’t like Mustaine, or they hate his vocals. Since when was metal about vocals? Listen to the effing MUSIC people! Mustaine made Metallica’s career? BWHAHAHA, wow, what ignorance, if not for metallica dave would prob be dead, after all, his obsession with copying met at everyturn kept him alive, lol. Those 2-3 riffs Mustaince whined about for years are not even close to metallicas best. Burton was way more influencial then anything mustaine ever did, if anything his self destructive ways was more of a burden to metallica.

Vocals do not matter? So slayer would still be good if the singer was ricky martin? Vocals make a HUGE difference, anyone saying otherwise os a moron who has no clue about what makes good music. Metallica at their best, the vocals made the music that much better, Mustaione always had crap vocals which at times dragged the music down.

Metallica simply made more epic, cohesive music that Mustaine could not match. Megadeth copied metallica at every turn, when metallica went mainstream, so did Mustaine, it is pathetic really how he was so obsessed with metallica after so many years.

Megadeth were a great band, but saying they are better is pure bias, from a music standpoint, Megadeth never reached the heights Metallica did, that’s a fact. As a cohesive unit, metallica were the best metal band ever in their prime, everything clicking at once, lyrics, musicmanship, cohesion, vocals.

Metallica are simpy superior musicians, better thrash at their prime, better songs, even when both bands went mainstream. Changing direction does not make a band suck, so close minded metal heads are. I hated Load/Reload, but face it, they still made great music that appealed to many, hardly makes them suck, just a change in direction, when megadeth tried it they failed.

How did Megadeth have a better career? Metallica sold more, and still made good music even when they went mainstream. Since when does showing versatility, and trying different things make a band worse? LOL, Metal heads are so close minded. metallica are simply a better band, capable of great thrash, great mainstream rock, if that makes them worse, then bash away, lol. Experimenting and trying to make different music and doing it well just show metallica are superior to Deth in every way. God forbid, a band does not put out the exact same album every few years, ignorance.

Dave Mustaine Sucks

Megadeth were and always be far superior in every way when compared to Metallica. The only thing that has held Megedeth back has been Mustaine’s need to sit down and cry every five minutes because he isn’t in Metallica any more, who cares about who he isn’t with ? Megadeth will never be seen as “bigger” than Metallica unless Mustaine starts to believes it himself, we are all behind him waiting to say “told you so”

Megadeth would be more successful than they are now if Mustaine had remained clean and not drug-riddled through the 80s and 90s. Awesome comeback, though. The man is now firing on all (1,000) cylinders and is hard to touch by any band – certainly the contribution to the metal world could never be denied.

I was a Metallica fan first but dropped away post-Black album. All others from metallica have been a waste of space in my book. Megadeth, too, have had a few blunders but Mustaine is flying the metal flag – Metallica isn’t. Metallica would be well-served changing personel by replacing Lars and Kirk. James IS Metallica and should re-group, IMHO. Mustaine did and look where it got him – worldwide respect and killer back-to-back records. Metallica, by comparison, hasn’t had a good back up since Puppets/Justice. So terribly disappointing especially given James’ talent. What a waste.

Metallica kick Megadeths ass ANYDAY, so what i have CTE, RIP and Youthanasia, whereas i have KE’A,RTL,MOP,AJFA,B,L,RL,S.A,DM,G.INC,S&M. Every Metallica album bar The Garage Days, the 6.98$ or whatever. Metallica are so much better, every album has great songs, Seek and Destroy and Hit The Lights, Ride The Lightning and For Whom The Bell Tolls, Master of Puppets and Battery, One and Blackened, Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman, Until It Sleeps and King Nothing, The Memory Remains and Fuel, St Anger and Frantic, and The Day That Never Comes and Cyanide. So ok, Metallica have had there bad albums, Load, ReLoad and St. Anger, but they still managed to produce some good songs off every album, whereas i dont have the same passion for listening to Megadeth, i listen to Hangar 18, Symphony of Destruction and Head Crusher/EndGame (when its out!) but having seen Metallica live, it was such a buzz and one hell of an experience, i just cant bring myself to listen to Megadeth im afraid, and Slayer, yes there heavy as f**k and FAST, and I prefer them to Megadeth, Metallica are still Metals most legendary band! \METALLICA/ !

Reply-Ofcourse the way Metallica has gone mainstream about their music why wouldn’t they do better in the selling of their records.Remember,they no longer sound heavy metal;its more of a heavy alternative rock music.And finally,Megadeth’s latest album ‘Endgame’ should put the ‘myth’ to rest that Metallica is better than Megadeth.

Therefore,my dear Metallica fans,please come back to reality and stop advocating that Metallica is better than Megadeth because one day history will judge that Megadeth’s music was far superior than Metallica’s.

Im a fan of both bands and its hard to call who’s better.
There both great but whilst metallica’s old stuff would kick the ass off megadeth’s old tracks. Megadeth’s new stuff is better than metallica’s and thats what matters. So i reckon megadeth are better

I took those facts straight from the album covers themselves so how are my facts false?

- I also love both bands but, to me Megadeth rips Metallica musically in every way! Especially since Megadeth always had such better musicians. Marty Freidman, Nick Menza Dave Ellefson, Chris Broderick, etc…

- The only album that holds any technical prestige over Megadeth is “…And Justice For All” but then “Rust In Peace” is such more intricate and interesting album. No thrash band guitar duo was better than Marty Freidman and Dave Mustaine.

-Endgame is such a great album compared to the cut and paste feel of “Death Magnetic” But either way I understand why people have so much love for Metallica, yet refuse to deny how much gay they really become.

It all goes down to opinion. Its a childish debate tbh. Some people are gonna like Metallica, others will like Megadeth. Whos to say what makes a band better or worse? Personally I think they both kick ass. but I prefer Metallica.

Personally, I think Metallica are better due to their contributions to the metal genre, they pulled it out of the underground and into the light for all to see. Metllica were also Megadeth’s greatest influence, Mustaine formed Megadeth to spite Metallice, ergo: If Metallica never existed, Megadeth wouldn’t either.

METALLICA IS BETTER THAN MEGADETH BY FAR.i dont think they sold out because Death Magnetic is a great album and they at least tried to get back to their roots. the only point i think that any REAL metal fan that likes a wide variety of metal bands, and not just one like an asshole, would say that Metallica did not live up to expectations when they made load reload and st anger. STILL THE MOST SUCCESSFUL METAL BAND OF ALL TIME THOUGH. The End. PERIOD. nuff said. there will no more discussion about this because megadeth will never be better than metallica maybe come close but never will beat them because mustaine is too much of a baby. Besides who has better vocals=metallica,drums-metallica-,bass-metallica, guitar is a hard decision but it goes to hammett because of his awesome use of the whammy(although occasionally over does it but who gives a fuck its awesome). but you have to give to give mustaine credit because his guitar playing is just straight shred, yet it is somewhat sloppy. also, he did a great job on kill em all, a couple of songs with megadeth. other than that not impressive at all. METALLICA WINS
