Megadeth ‘Endgame’ Track-By-Track Preview
We’ve heard the scorching new album from Megadeth and here’s our track-by-track guide to their brand new record, ‘Endgame’!
Dialectic Chaos: A truly epic 2-minute instrumental crammed with blazing solos opens ‘Endgame’! Mustaine has recently been telling all and sundry that former Nevermore and Jag panzer man Chris Broderick is the best fellow axeman he’s ever had in Megadeth and on this blistering opening (and throughout the album), the lead trade-off’s between the two are nothing short of mind-blowing.
This Day We Fight!: The instrumental segues straight into a punishing thrash riff and venomous Mustaine vocal-line. It’s a HELL of an opening one-two combo! The pace of it, the unrelenting aggression, the insane fret-work – Mustaine sounds beyond pissed-off and this is going to kick all kinds of ass when it’s blasted out live. The shredding on this track will melt your face and blow your mind.
44 Minutes: A stirring, epic intro (complete with a cop’s radio reporting a crime in progress) gives way to a jarring, stomping riff that dominates the verse and is followed by a huge melodic chorus and even more fret-frying lead guitar work. The second solo has Eastern influences but the punching rhythm guitar packs just as much of a punch as the solo itself.
1,320’: A heavily 80’s inspired opening riff is then accompanied by pounding double-time snare drums. The motorbike-themed track is riddled with suitably fuel-injected riffing and yet more unrelenting solos. Fans of the widdle are going to wet themselves when they hear this record!
Bite The Hand That Feeds: Again, the lead riff on the album is 80’s-tastic but in a way that doesn’t sound dated in the slightest. It captures the vintage Megadeth sound but Andy Sneap’s dynamic, crunching production brings it kicking and screaming into 2009. At this point, it really seems as though Megadeth have created something special with ‘Endgame’. Every single second so far has kicked every kind of ass imaginable. The outro to this tune is mega in a Motorhead-fashion!
Bodies Left Behind: The track opens at a mid-tempo pace that echoes the band’s early 90’s output. Again, it’s Mustaine’s trademark sneer that fuels this inferno. Possibly the catchiest chorus thus far and the track also has the most twists and turns thus far in terms of tempo and feeling (mid-tempo chug through to neck-snapping thrash). This one’s an absolute monster.
Endgame: “Attention! Attention! All citizens report to your district detention centres! Do not return to your homes! Do not contact anyone! Return all of your weapons!” screams a megaphone introduction to the album’s politically-charged title-track before giving way to a chugging bombardment of riffs. Chug turns to sprint after around 2 minutes as those fret-melting lead guitars take over again. “This is the end of the road, this is the end of the line, this is the end of your life, this is the Endgame!”, roars the chorus. Clocking in at just under 6 minutes, this is yet another beast of a track. We know you’ll have heard a lot of hype about this record but it really is THAT good!
The Hardest part Of Letting Go…Sealed With A Kiss: An acoustic opening and subtle strings are backed by a haunting Mustaine vocal lines. Feint lead guitars lurk in the background before crashing through the boundaries. Hard-hitting riffs combine with stabbing violin lines on this odd, hard-rocking ballad.
Headcrusher: If you’ve not heard this one by now, you had really ought to. Check it out here! It’s a Megadeth classic in waiting and if that pneumatic-drill of a riff in the chorus could bang the head of a man with no neck.
How the Story Ends: ‘United Abominations’ was a fantastic record but when you’re getting to track 10 of ‘Endgame’ and it’s giving the best tracks from that album a run for it’s money, it tells you what we’re dealing with on this album. An all-out assault of up-tempo guitar work, a middle-8 that sees palm-muted riffing combine with thunderous double-bass drums and a mammoth chorus, How the Story Ends is yet another killer track. We’re definitely looking at one of the albums of the year here, no question about it.
Nothing Left To Lose: A rumbling bass line leads us into a guttural, low-end riff and a chorus that conjures memories of 90’s Megadeth. After 3 minutes, there’s a truly heroic build-up and all hell breaks lose. Solos fly while the rhythm track pounds like a prize-fighter to the track’s end.
‘Endgame’ not only has a claim to be the best Megadeth album for over a decade (quite an achievement after how good ‘United Abominations’ was), in a year chocked full of awesome albums, ‘Endgame’ is one of 2009’s best.

Megadeth is great. I very curiuous to listen to Endgame. If it is better than Countdown to Extinction i dont know. The only thing i know is that this will be the album of the year.
I’m a big fan of both metallica and megadeth. But I’m sorry, just from hearing “headcrusher” it’s easy to see, who’s winning the metal war in the year 2009. Metallica seems to be aging too fast, they can’t play their old stuff (music that dave help write..) live anymore! But dave, holy shit, YOU ARE A METAL GOD.

I have hated Megadeth since they turned their backs on thrash w So Far. Dave is a GODLY player but the writing has been hard rock at best. THIS sounds like Dave may have actually gotten some piss-and-vinegar back in his blood? I sure as hell hope so.
Megadeth has done nothing but improve since the release of Risk, this is sure to be awesome, If Head Crusher is any indication this will be sick !

This sounds promising though I can’t agree with the suggestion that ‘United..’ was a great record.Let’s be honest it was disorganised, inconsistent and had a huge amount of re-cycled riffs.

UA was not that good, not sure where people get that, it had 3-4 good songs (2 of them great), after that a very avg album, seems megadeth get a free pass on metal hammer. I hope ENDGAME is better. Way too much recycled filler on UA.
Megadeth winning the 90’s? LOL, deth’s albums have been from bad to average, with way too much recycled material and rock lyrics, Ua was a decent step in the right direction, but still very inconsistent. metallica had 1 bad record (Anger), load and reload were good, just not Metal, but there is music outside metal. Magnetic was very good, lets hope endgame is to, at least better then UA. Mustaine must have nude pics of Metal hammer staff as blackmail.

To say death magentic is a good album and that UA is not is ridiculous.
I had high hopes for death magnetic, but if failed to produce –very disconnected with no songs I really enjoyed. I spun it a half dozen times and as much as I tried I could not get myself to tolerate it, definately off my playlist.
UA on the other hand had at least a handful of solid tracks, dispite the at times bordering ridiculous politcal lyrics.
I really need to hear it, I can’t wait any longer… It sound even better with this review!

Outside the first 2 tracks, and 1-2 more whats the hell is so good about UA? Please, mustaine lovers, metallica sucked until magnetic, Megadeth has sucked this decade as well, whats the problem? Endgame sounds good, but come on, UA still has a lot of Mustaine EMO 90’s lyrics and rock, 3 good tracks does not an good album make. Megadeth has been as bad as metallica since the 90’s, but Mustaine gets a pass because it’s trendy. Funny, people bash metallica because they got trendy, yet they are guilty of being trendy themselves.

UA was a very mediocre record. The first 4 tracks were great and the last 2 were pretty good…but I can’t help but skip everything in between. I actually liked TSHF better. That was a great album. EG sounds pretty promising.

im hoping this album is better than abomination. im a lifer megadeth fan but i preferred the world needs a hero over abom. anyday. headcrusher sounds more in line with abom. so im not thrilled yet. ‘ll still buy it but it may stay in my cd case while i continue to wear out peace sells and twnah. see ya at namm dave. you can hate me then. lol
Burnt Ice was better than the entire Magnetic album. The only metal band that has been true to their roots and still kick ass is the best band out there. I’m talking of course of SLAYER. Who cares about the Megadeth and Metallica beef anyway? Just agree that in their prime they both were thrash pioneers and both did great things for metal as a whole. If you want to talk about being versatile and not just metal then don’t listen to Metallica, you should be listening to Black Label. Pride and Glory is one of the most beautiful albums ever and puts tears in my eyes to this day.
