Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine: “We’ve Gone From Having A Great Relationship With The UK To Losing It, To Gaining It Again.”
Hammer’s US correspondent Chaos spoke to Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine and asked when he’d be back in the UK, to which the reply was more insightful than we’d bargained for.
So when can the UK expect to see Megadeth return?
“2010. That’s one of the things we were concerned about. We’ve gone from having a great relationship with the UK audience to pretty much losing it, to gaining it back again. I don’t think that’s something to be pinned on the English audience. I think it’s 75% me and maybe 25% them. In respect to the 25%, it has to do with people getting older – and people change. The 75% on my side, I believe that I wasn’t keeping my end of the bargain.”

“I got caught up in drugs and drinking. I expected the fans to accept that. I’m a different person today. I really enjoy who I am right now, my early years weren’t that good but my later years sure have been. I didn’t start very good, but I’m certainly going to finish much better. When I get on stage my one goal is to get you to walk away shaking your head and never want to pick up your guitar again,” he says, laughing.

“One thing I dig about heavy metal fans in general is that they are smart enough to forgive people, if those people are honest enough to admit they made a mistake. It’s been a considerable amount of time since I did anything REALLY stupid, but you know, I’m not one of these musicians who try and hide their human side. I think that’s what makes people either love me or hate me. There are a lot of musicians who would rather have the illusion that they are so different from everybody else.”
Some bands/artists like to stay elusive to their fans because they think it keeps the mystery alive…
“Well, it’s not like seeing the bride before the wedding, people are porking the bride before the wedding these days, ya know?”

Hating Mustaine, like Eddie said, is such well organized business. Like selling that Nike shoe that gives you the blister. The fools rush into it … like fools do.
Just think about the songs he made. Consult a music teacher for once, about the complexity of his songs. Think Schoenberg and Wagner(RS once upon a time compared him to Wagner).
Also, when you are at it ask a literature prof about the lyrics. Don’t forget to look for his interpretations of Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and Sartre in his songs. And don’t forget Byron and Rilke influences too.
True. He is really bad at playing one of you, cos he never was one of you. But there are other bands, BIG ones, who are good at that. Love ‘em all!! They really are one of you!

It’s not as if he’s only just started rambling about things is it?
But you can’t deny the guy has been as big an influence on metal as many of his peers.Yes he’s an arrogant son of a bitch but fuck he writes some good tunes.
Mustaine will always gain hatred and love in equal measures but as long as he keeps writing and playing killer metal then I know which side of the love/hate divide i’ll be on.
