as long as ac/dc are playing anything eles is a bounus for me
Well im not AMAZED thus far, although I am looking forward to ACCA DACCA and Bullet.
I think ‘Clahnload’ did hype it up a bit too much to be honest….buuuuuuuut….they still have over 100 bands still to announce! Everyone seems to forget that this is just the tip of the Iceberg.
Also…while im here…Can you PLEASE stop mentioning Manowar could be playing…your getting my hopes up too much. If they did play i would most certainly make a ‘romance explosion’ in my pantaloons.
Gill and Beez rock, keep it metal \m/
if it wasn’t so hyped everyone would love the announcement, but everyone got their hopes too high
I think its pretty decent so far and downloads never failed me before so im confident in the future additions rocking our tits off
It’s a good lineup, but it was hyped up sooo much.
A little bit disappointing really. AC/DC was an anti-climax due to ‘that’ leak, although Motorheads always a good choice they’re not particularly unexpected, and while utterly awesome Megadeth pales a bit when you know Sonisphere’s got The Big 4! and I haven’t heard a lot of Volbeat or Wolfmother, so they could be good. However, STP, deftones, BFMV & Them Crooked Vultures do nothing for me. STP especially annoys me as they’re just another ‘back together for the cash’ band.
Rock/Metal fans are so hard to please. I cant believe some people are already dissapointed by the announcement when there are a great selection of initial bands there, with over half left to STILL be announced.
And we all pretty much know Metallica are going to get announced in the next couple of days unless they announce a show of their own at either wembley, milton keynes or the O2.
Sounds like a fucking great wknd to me. Stick Alice In Chains on the bill along with Soundgarden and Down and i’m a happy man!
Great opening announcement! I’d happily watch all the bands. To anyone that feels let down, what were you expecting exactly? Everyone indulges in ‘festival maths’ and we had a pretty good idea of what to expect but even without the suprise factor it’s a very strong line up. There’s still over a hundred bands yet to announce so anyone who writes off Download this early is an idiot.
Great 1st announcement. This will be my 5 year and it’s the best 1st announcement yet. People are forgetting that there’s still two headliners yet so the big hyped annoucement might be just around the corner. Can’t wait for Megadeth and Deftones was a nice surprise, here’s hoping for SOAD!!
I was really disappointed at the download line up, ACDC will be great headliners, i saw them last year in hampden, but i mean, them crooked vultures do not fit this bil, they belong at reading/leeds. and whats with only 1 headliner being announced, we want all 3
What has happened to music festivals in this country?
Once upon a time most bands didn’t have global stardom and had to go platinum on a record to headline a festival.
Since 2003 Download has put too many 70’s/80’s bands as headliners. These bands are nothing more than a safe bet for crowds. In the 80’s and 90’s festivals were exciting and every band had a chance to be anywhere on the bill.
Now I can garauntee Iron Maiden will play mostly every year and they will headline. Motley Crue and Metallica will also always been given priority.
Maybe this reflects the age and opinions of the organising team, who mostly over the age of 30.
I’d celebrate if Download revolutionised metal festivals again and gave smaller bands with a large fan base and maybe not large sales, a chance to get higher on the bill.
The only younger bands to headline are the likes of Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance. Which just makes me feel that Download festival is more about making money than being true to its Monster of Rock roots.
The amount of hype prior to the announcement led me to assume that Andy Copping was going to bring dead musicians back to life and form some kind of superband. Needless to say I was disappointed when I found out who was actually playing. Megadave, Motorhead & Volbeat are great bands but I’m going to wait for more to be announced before I decide whether or not to fork out good money to be stuck in a field with drunk assholes for a weekend
to much hype and not enough spread of all heavier genres there. dont get me wrong all the bands are cool but they have either toured to death or are just ‘usuals’ at donnington. nothing excites me about it as yet. yet im sure it will get better after the next 2 announcements. but the hype on this one disappointed me immensely!
I was half expecting Foo Fighters and SOAD (I was half right cos of them crooked vultures), but Megadeth Motorhead AND AC/DC? Hell to the yeah!
People forget that Download is a ROCK festival too easily
Bloodstock ftw!
they may as well have just confirmed that AC/DC were playin as they’re the ones that mean the size got bumped up.
think Mustaine is doin what beze said he would do, held out for the big money just so that the big 4 wouldnt happen in the UK. Although i am still hopeful for sonisphere bringing it to the uk, “friday afternoon, i’d say thats long enough for 4 bands … i’m just sayin” lol
think we may have some fairly heritage dominated festivals this year. Can’t wait for more announcements.
haha just read your big 4 not in UK thing, well there goes my hope.
BIG dissapointment! Andy Copping is an idiot! By bigging the line-up so much and using stupid publicity stunts he just builds it up to be a dissapointment! Yes ACDC are good but quite frankly after being told that we would freak out over the announcement, I can only be dissapointed unless they managed to bring Dimebag or Cliff Burton back to life!!! or the next best thing a Sepultura reunion!
The bands are quite good BUT its the publicity bull-shit that Andy Copping uses that pisses me off! I thought the Rock and Metal community were better than such idiotic stunts! Sonisphere is pure and simple! They announced the line-up ages ago even though the festival is months after Download! and they quite frankly gave a much better incentive to buy a ticket! Not only was the UK sonisphere an awesome line-up! But free Poland tickets too!!
Andy next time just announce the bloody bands, and if they’re really that good we’ll be the judge and you’ll see what people think by how many tickets you sell! Leave the stupid pointless announcements to people who have to stoop that low, like Simon Cowell!!
Anyway
Cheers
Slightly disappointed, however, there’s a lot more to come, also, its just as much about the atmosphere at download, people congregating from near and far to celebrate our sort of music. With two more headliners to be announced, who knows what andy will bring to the table.
kasia:
i think bringing back the older bands is definately going back to their roots.
new music sucks nowadays
you cant beat the old stuff. end of
I’m with Kasia. Just said to Gill that’s one of the best things I’ve seen posted on one of these discussions.
Love Megadeth, Love AC/DC…all we need now is Maiden and you have the perfect rock sandwich!!
I’m currently loving the most recent bands but i also agree smaller bands need a better chance.
probably the best example from last year was Sylosis were still pretty unknown but still didn’t open up a stage, bands like Sylosis and FFDP (preferably a British band though) who get opening sets for other bands should A) Be given a slot on main stage to give em more of a chance. And B) Some of the bigger ones that are selling out say venues of 2-3k should be given the chance to headline or sub-headline, not just have to be able to sell out Stadiums and Arena’s (such as AC/DC, Metallica, Slipknot etc).
I’d honestly love to see someone whose just really surfaced in the 00’s, such as BFMV (not for headlining yet) but someone of that sort of idea.
Like most people I’m stoked about AC/DC, but when did Download announce it was turning in to a shit year at Reading / Leeds? TCV Deserve mid way up the second stage at best, and even that’s pushing it given they’ve released almost no material and only done very few UK shows. Given how much Ghrol probably demanded to do the gig I hate to think who we may have lost out on.
Deftones? I think the only live show I’ve found more boring was Coldplay FFS! Over-hyped, self-indulgent dross. If you wanted someone inventive why not give us Devin Townsend or try to get Maynard off his arse?
BFMV were pathetic at Sonisphere last year and, I expect, will only screw up bigger the bigger stage they’re given.
A lot of the problem is that we pretty much knew AC/DC were going to be there, so all the hype, all the dangling this carrot of “the best lineup ever” was such a damp squib. There was nothing in the announcement worth getting excited about that we couldn’t have predicted. And now there’s no chance of SOAD? WTF have you been doing since last summer?
……………………….It was shit
I think its a damn good announcement. It will be interesting to see the rest of the line up but with what could be AC DC’s last festival show, maybe even Megadeths in the UK depending on how Mustains body feels then its something not to miss. Bullet will have a new album out which hopefully will be better than Scream Aim Fire, although there were some good tracks on there. Ok TCV isnt so great but chuck Sylosis, Malefice, maybe even get Machine Head and L.O.G in there and it will instantly become the best value for money this summer. (For me anyway, I am in America for the awesome bloodstock line up booooooooooooooooooooooooooo) \m/
I’m sorry, but thats what most people were thinking!
They haven’t annouced all yet; but this certainly didn’t blow me away!
Have to agree with the general overriding opinion here…too much hype only leads to disappointment. The announcement contained plenty of good bands, but was hugely underwhelming after such a build-up.
I thought Andy said that he had booked one band that would make us shit our pants in amazmenet at how he managed to get them. Who was that excactly? There are no bands here (save perhaps STP) that aren’t touring and/or festival regulars.
First off, for all the people doing the Download Vs. Soni thing. Shouldn’t we be happy? For a genre that has been snubbed by the mainstream. Looked at as the family member you never want the public to see.
But now we have Download, Sonisphere, Hammerfest, Hard Rock Hell, Bloodstock, High Voltage. And then a few more for your more “heavy” bands. Things could never be better, we might never get the coverage Leeds/Reading and the other BBC Festivals will get. But we will keep on plugging away, sticking together and having a great fucking time while doing so.
And who said Rock N’ Roll was dead? (Metal included)
Download and Soni are always going to have to lean towards older acts though, atleast at the top end of the bill. Mainly because of the size of the festivals. The people who go see the younger bands at the “smaller” festivals might not be able to afford the full weekend at the big ones. It will be bands like AC/DC, Maiden, Metallia, KISS that sold tickets more than MCR, Linkin Park and Lostprophets.
Download had over 100 bands last year, ofcourse there is going to be alot of smaller younger bands. But putting them on the mainstage wouldn’t sell tickets. And all these things are a business. You wouldn’t put Suicide Silence in between Tesla and Skin for example. But if done right 5FDP, Black Stone Cherry, it can boost the bands popularity. In in case of the former, turn them into the “Cool to Hate” band
Where as at Bloodstock, Hammerfest you will get alot of younger bands given a chance, because its a different type of festival.
The one time we have something good going on with amount of choice, the bands coming through, and the old boys still showing them how its done. Why are we all at each others throats?
Live it, love it, embrace it. Things have never been better for al of us. Lets just make the most of it and have a good fucking time? You never know what will happen tomorrow. And go listen to some Black Spiders.
And always finish on a quote? How about some Manowar. Just for old times sake.
“Brothers Everywhere! Raise your hands into the air, we’re warriors, warriors of the world”
I was kinda hoping for a metallica or a big four thing in the UK seeing as not all of us can make it to poland to have that luxury of seeing them there. i’m not a particually huge fan of Megadeth (tho the new album is very well done) and im not a huge fan of AC/DC (one or two songs).
This annoucement hasnt made me want to fork out 180 quid to see them. altho it does seem pretty solid lineup thus far.
The bill (so far) is generally dissapointing. I think even if Download pulls out two great bands as headliners it will still seem empty compared to Sonisphere. Not forgetting Sonisphere have the greatest live band Rammstein on the line up.
Bugger. Maybe I shouldn’t of said the F word ha.
The answer to Kasia’s excellent observation is simple the orgainzers don’t care about creating a new festival experience to remember because the safest way to fill the house is to book the metal zimmerframe Inc.
Personally at 40+ I want to see ‘of this moment’ bands given their chance, celebrating 2010 festival in a 1980 time machine does not appeal anniversary or not. It saddens me that a band like Slipknot only got to headline 10 years on after they took the ‘mainstream crossover’ recording approach.
Kasia’s point is still valid for any genre and not just our own preference here. So these huge bands continue to headline even if creatively their latest output falls way short of their back catalogue. Credibility of these festivals would improve if lineup reflected recent critical acclaim. There will be many here who just want to see the Gods of metal again and again.
To be honest looking at MH top 10 albums of the year you guys don’t help the situation. Safe choices from old hands sell magazines as well as tickets it seems.
I think uts killer so far. Top quality bands. the only one i’m not looking forward to seeing is Deftones. Saw them in 06 on the family values with Korn and ‘Boring’ is and understatement. But after that its all good

MEGADETH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have many differening thoughts on this years line up most of them don’t generate any excitment or enthusiasm, however only 9 bands have been named so far.
I do agree with what has been said above – festivals now do rely on having a big name headlining in order to pull in a crowd. Unless Iron Maiden, Metallica, etc are there it isn’t a festival and it’s commonly believed that unless theres a balding man hoping he doesn’t throw out his hip as he rocks out on the main stage a festival won’t be a success.
Now, I’m not saying these old guys aren’t good – they are! They are the influence for many of the bands currently working their arses off today. However the excitement and enthusiasm for these bands goes if each summer we wheel them out of rehab to play a show.
Having said that I am actually excited to see STP, it will be interesting to see how they work together as a band these days.
I’ve never seen ACDC live and in all honesty they’ve never really interested me especially as ‘Thunder’ is the track used during one of the evil body pump exercises and now I utterly loathe them!
I don’t understand why Them Crooked Vultures are big news – they attract the ‘radio 1′ crowd of people – pretentious, over hyped, not all the musically challenging, easy listening noise that’s safe for all the family during a long car journey in which you simply pray they don’t play Lilly Allen. Aren’t they more suited to Leeds and Reading? that’s gone very indy!
I hope the next announcement involve younger bands with a lot of energy and hopefully bulging muscles covered in baby oil.
This really is major let down, it was built up so much, now its just meh! I know loads of you will hate me for this but I actually do not like either AC/DC or Motorhead (except like one or two songs) all the songs sound EXACTLY the same it is as boring as hell. No matter how hard I try I just cannot get into them. Megadeth and BFMV are awsome the others arent too bad
where the fucks soad
where the fucks soad man, or soundgarden
What is wrong with you people…… it’s AC/DC and Megadeth….. the forums have been buzzing for months wanting to see these bands then their announced and everyone bitches and moans, I for one can’t wait!!!!
Bulging Muscles with Baby Oil, you need Belligerence on the Line-Up!!
I do get the impression that Download has only booked Megadeth in a bid to stop Sonisphere making history by getting the Big 4 to play together in the UK for the first time.
Sonisphere has certainly caught the attention of the masses – Rammstein, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Anthrax, Fear Factory, Alice Cooper etc is a lot better than Wolfmother, Them Crooked Vultures, Stone Temple Pilots and a bunch of bands people don’t actually care about.
Apart from AC/DC, Megadeth and Deftones, it is a really bad first announcement.
Andy Copping is his own hype machine.
lukewarm. take deftones off and it becomes stone cold
To be fair it was a pretty average announcement, nothing shocking and nothing that would make me want to go yet. 3 bands I hate, 6 bands im not bothered about either way and 1 i love but have seen 6 years in a row already….
I’m quite dissapointed that Mr. Copping hyped up the announcement so much and then announced the headliner that everyone already knew was playing. Also, Why are Megadeth and Motorhead so low down on the bill?
Sonisphere has more of a WOW factor so far me thinks. Though AC/DC is a MASSIVE result and they will sell SHEDLOADS of tickets.
What people are failing to realise is that if you buy a ticket for Download, you will probably only get to see 6 of the bands announced because of clashes etc. This has always been Download’s strength – they put up a shit load of bands and you the punter has the right to choose which bands you want to see. In reality, you’ll probably only see a quarter of the bands announced anyway.
Now if everybody who is pissing and moaning about this band or that band playing picked their 6 favourite bands out of that line up, they’d have very little to complain about.
I have also not read anywhere that this was Andy’s big reveal (although AC/DC is a pretty big fucking deal in my book!). Last year the big reveal was saved until last and I reckon Andy will do the same this year.
Everyone is happy that Megadeth are playing, but aren’t they a long way down the list?
not surprise about download everyone i know has seen AC/DC so noth big let! the sonisphere is still better but cant wait for the rest of the lines up for both festivals
I want MANOWAR and myself to headline it.
Its the best opening announcement download have had for a while
But in my opinion, no matter how famous its members, TCV dont really look right being that high up, with only one album to their name.
Would have thought Megadeth and Motorhead woulda been higher as well….maybe that just shows the strength’s of the TBC acts…
Its not great in comparison to Sonisphere, but, if you look at last years festivals Sonisphere had more bands that were worth seeing Download had the big announcements (FNM, Journey, ZZ Top et al) This year is sort of a role reversal. Its a tough choice but i can’t really see anyone with common sense making a decision just yet cause with so many more bands to be announced for each its far too early to tell
Iron Maiden and Alice Cooper Vs. AC/DC, TCV and Motorhead, there’s no choice really.
Summer is going to end up costing a bloody fortune.
in one word …PANTS!
No matter what the final lineup will be, people will always have something negative to say, because their personal music tastes have not been met…if your not statisfied with this years line-up don’t go…nuff said
im sorry, but if ACDC will be there, i sure wont. rest of the bands are pretty sweet, but ACDC ruins it all for me, skipping Download this year.
Well it didn’t exactly piss all over Sonisphere did it?
Fucking hell the only good bands are AC/DC, BFMV, Motorhead and Megadeth. Why the hell has copping booked friggin Them crooked vultures they suck more than a prostitue sucking a cock. I actualy prefare the sonisphere announcment im going to sonisphere this year. Screw download. Lets hope its better next year.
cant believe people r moaning bout how fookin dissapointed they r with the lineup… for fucksake acca r the biggest rock band in the world..and ur gonna get loads more yet..moaning little fookers !
The thing that’s frustrating is that if AC/DC wasn’t leaked and the announcement was the first that people had heard of it, everyone would have creamed their pants and hailed copping the god of rock!!!
Maiden, Rammstein, Slayer, Motley Crue. Who needs Download this year ! Plus Sonisphere major pull, is that no two bands on the main stages play at the same time, therefore no clashes and no one misses out on any of the bands.
