Of course Judas Priest are metal, they were the pre-cursors to the ‘NWOBHM’ in the 80s, inspiring loads of great metal bands of the time, as well as being one of the first bands to really define the “metal and studs” look that metal bands still use today.

There’s no point in comparing their style in the 70s to today’s metal bands, because that’s an irrelevant point. They’ve been going before the genre of ‘metal’ even really existed, just because they’re not as heavy/thrashy/shouty as more contemporary bands of today. You could say Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden aren’t metal bands either (you could, but you’d look like a dick)

Tbh, I don’t mind a bit of MCR. I also don’t mind Paramore, Muse, Fall Out Boy, Kings of Leon, HIM, The White Stripes (and even Taylor Swift!) and loads of other bands that have somewhat more mainstream acceptance than your average metal band. I am a metal fan, totally, but I don’t close my mind and ears off to certain things just because I may get some abuse from idiots like you on metal internet forums.

Metal is all about being true to yourself and not being at all ashamed of who you are or what you like. While I like the above bands, I would rather listen to the likes of Iced Earth, Emperor, Dream Theater, Nile, Testament and, of course, Judas Priest.

I hate it when people believe that if it wasn’t for {insert metal band name here} there would never be metal. That’s stupid to believe and I’ll tell you why. If Judas Priest never came to be, some other band would’ve played something which we would be calling metal right now and would be obsessing over.

Plus, the fact that they were one or the first band to play the genre, doesn’t mean no one else could’ve done it. Simply, they just got the chance first.

Why did they get famous then?
I’m guessing due to the smaller number of metal bands and new/ different genres to choose from. A new band came out, they had so many things to try out no one had ever attempted before. Like… tune up your shit and make something Metal… and bam! you’re famous. And maybe overrated… but I won’t say that cause we all like our different shit.

I prefer the modern stuff where the vocals sound cleaner, better, better sounding guitars

IDK… I can’t find much in older music.
Modern music take what is great about the old, but apply modern shit, which I believe is to blame for the greater sound that at least I like in modern music. Except for the Iron Maiden “These Colours…” solo… an older band performing one of my favorite solos. Usually my fave solos are done by newer bands like Atreyu. Anyway that’s enough about modern/older music.
