Nathan Biggs Chats To Jussi 69 Eyes!
Our man on the Swedish ground, Sonic Syndicate’s Nathan Biggs, has been giving us a Brit’s-eye-view of metal in Scandanavia. This time round he’s been chatting to Jussi from the Helsinki vampires, 69 Eyes!
N: Ok. So we’re sat here in the Backstage Bar in HELL! So whats the difference between this and Green Room for all those people who haven’t been here
J69: Well. Bakkari is open whenever you want it to be open for a beer. Green Room is the night club upstairs. We’ve got lots of wide screen TVs up there, a stage and shit… some of nights we’ve had recently have been the premiere of the Lemmy movie, Bam Majera’s Where The Fuck is Santa xmas Mayhem party (the snow machines, a mrs christmas babes wearing stuff that left nothing to the imagination were a lot of fun), and COB’s world premiere record release party… just to name a few
N: Ok. This is a weird interview dude. Basically trying to explain to the readers in the UK and the world that this one of the most awesome metal clubs i’ve been too. You and me have had some pretty insane drunken nights here….
J69: I’d like to think that we have the same kind of vibe here as some of the cool places i’ve hung out at around the world, like the Rainbow in LA, all you fucks in the UK should know The Crowbar in London, Rok Rok in Osaka Japan… basically we wanted to take little bits from these places which made them awesome… i think we’ve really achieved that……. we like to keep it comfy so you feel at home right away… but basically it is pretty raw and sleazy too… if you are into rock and metal then you’ll never want to leave
N: Dude. We were here at the weekend and there were a bunch of chinese dudes with cameras taking photos of the wall? Your collecting quite a lot of signed memorabilia
J69: Yeah, I know. Earlier today there were a load of Australians who had come here just to see Alexi’s guitar in the “hate lounge” upstairs
N: A pretty important thing here is the music right?
J69: Well. Kind of. We usually play all the metal and rock imaginable… but this one night i remember my dear friend Bam was DJing here… All he brought with him was one track single “:Die Antword – i’ll be your samurai” which he intended to play on repeat for his whole night… But it turns out he burnt the wrong CD and brought one of his old porn DVDs… So we put it in to play and all this nasty-ass stuff comes on all the flat screens through the whole club… We did the only thing you could do in that situation. Left it playing and carried on drinking.
N: A lot of people are calling this the Rainbow of Helsinki. How do you like that title?
J69: Its an honor and i can relate to that. Cuz i’ve lost countless nights in the Rainbow myself. If you’ve ever been there or heard stories thats exactly what we are trying to do here… not in super rock star way … only that legends of are generation know they can come here and drink and chill and party … this is Alexi’s place to hang when COB ain’t on tour…
N: Yeah man… everyone is here…. and your like the Godfather or something just sitting in the back! … I remember just 2 weeks ago when Slipknot were here. You spent the night talking about going to learn real tribal drumming in africa with Joey Jordisson, and for some reason I was talking about buying a holiday cottages with Sid.
J69: Yeah was a classic! Pretty much the highlight of the year so far! Defintely the craziest after party yet! Slipknot are some of my favorite guys to bring here. That night we had In Flames and Sonata Artcica also.
N: Ok. So for a budding rockstar stalker how would one go about getting a job in GR so they can perve on all these legends?
J69: A good start is to make up a story that they had sexual dreams about me…. Then if she’s cute enough I’ll lock you in a room with Dragen (Backyard Babies) while he talks about his lawnmower obsession… TRUE STORY…… however if your a guy it kind of comes down to your tom cruise cocktail abilities.
