There was a time (well a couple of months ago) when it was only A-listers that anyone bothered to impersonate on social networking site Twitter but now not even underground prog-death metal bands aren’t safe.

Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt is furious that a person has been impersonating him asking his fans to “tell him to fuck off”.

He said: “OK, good people, time for another boring post about some retarded little boy that thinks it’s fun to pose like me and write ‘fun’ posts about new Opeth album titles etc.

“To be honest, I’d be surprised if anyone actually believed it was a page run by me. It’s so silly that it’d take an enormous amount of ignorance, or booze, to actually fall for this hoax.”

Mikael said he would prefer that his fans simply ignore the page.

In the same post he revealed that Opeth had been offered a spot supporting Tool on their tour of the US but had been unable to take up the offer.

Mikael joins a group including George Bush, actor Christopher Walken and Transformers star Megan Fox, who have all had their identities faked on the site.

In June, Twitter introduced an account verifying system to try and combat fake accounts claiming to be those of well known figures.

Fear not though metal fans, no one could fake the solid steel quality tweets that spill forth on the Metal Hammer Twitter account.
