Phil Demmel Collapses At Sonisphere Finland
Don’t worry though, the Machine Head axe-manĀ is doing well since the incident.
Machine Head guitarist and all-round top man Phil Demmel passed out onstage at Sonisphere in Finland this past Saturday, 25th July. After being helped off the stage, he quickly regained consciousness and was helped back to the stage, where he apologised to the audience “for cheating them of their last song.”
Such is the measure of the man, his instant reaction was to issue a statement to Sonisphere saying “I feel I short-changed the fans and really want to make it up for them. Thanks for all the concern.”
See, we told you he was a top man.
Phil passed out on stage at the tail end of last year on the band’s UK tour supporting Slipknot. According to information we found on Blabbermouth, Phil suffers from a rare condition called cardiogenic syncope (which means that the heart sometimes fails to pump enough blood to the brain, resulting in the sufferer blacking out).
Rumours are currently circulating that Machine Head will play their intended slot at this weekend’s Sonisphere festival.
Sonisphere will be headlined by Metallica and Linkin Park and will take place on August 1st – 2nd at Knebworth. Also on the bill will be Heaven & Hell, Nine Inch Nails, Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, Lamb Of God, Alice In Chains, Mastodon, Anthrax, Airbourne, Corey Taylor and Killing Joke.

I reckon that this incident could be in some way related to Machine Head deciding to play Sonisphere in the UK, if they are. Seems to be a bit of a coincidence.
you are really stupid, it says clearly he has cardiogenic syncope
I’m stupid? It’s just an idea, and he said he really wanted to make it up to the fans (by playing at another Sonisphere maybe?). And I’m not saying he doesn’t have cardiogenic syncope (and it’s a pretty safe bet that you didn’t even know what it was until you read about it after Phil first collapsed). Again, it was just an idea, not me trying to state a fact. Maybe you should have read more carefully…
Thats a bit harsh, suggesting he used his illness to get back on Sonisphere UK.
I think you’re missing the point. I’m saying that Machine Head MIGHT be doing UK Sonisphere to make it up to their fans, as Phil said that he felt he cheated the other Sonisphere fans, NOT using it as an excuse to get back on. Why would he use his illness to get back on a festival they no longer wanted to do? Is anyone actually fully reading and understanding my posts? There’s no suggestion from me that he used his illness to get back on, he can’t control it so how would he be able to black out on stage purposely to use that as a reason? THINK!
“he said he really wanted to make it up to the fans (by playing at another Sonisphere maybe?)”
This is what I thought, to quote Phil:
“I feel I short-changed the fans and really want to make it up for them.”
Yes, he probably meant the fans in that country who attended that particular Sonisphere fest, as opposed to all MH fans in general.
But you never know, lol I hope Fred gets his come uppence at least if they do come back xD
collapsed at Sheffield as well, poor lad.
Think the whole band need a break, been touring for so long.
*’s comments are similar to some idiot on the Kerrang site who’s going on about Phil’s condition being ‘karma’ for pulling out of Sonisphere UK. Its bloody ignorant and completely overlooks a bad heart condition.
I hope Phil recovers quickly and that Machine Head are running at full capacity again very shortly. I don’t hold anything against them for pulling out of Sonisphere.
This happens quite often, so I’m sure he’ll be fine. I agree with Pure Sincerity, a break might do them all good.
Great guy, hope its nothing serious.
yeah i was there when he collapsed at sheffield . was just at the solo in Halo , i was well gutted
but what a guy he is !!! go Phill
I know I’m probably get stick for this, but maybe he should call it a day, if not take a loooooooooooong break, I admire Phil Demmel as a guitarist and a person, but this has happened too much!!
He needs to slow down for a while before we lose another great guitarist too soon!! Take care phil!!!
What the fuck. THE MAN DESERVES A MEDAL. you arrogant fucks!
such is the man, he’ll still give it 200% the next time hes on stage…but i agree with karl, he should take a long break, the shows and performaces can wait, health comes first
Machine Head are an amazing band and Phil Demmel is an amazing person and guitarist. If he wants to continue thats his choice, and he most likely will. Its happned before and hes continued after that. He wont give up that easily!
I kinda got the impression it was to do with stress or something – the first time it happened onstage was right after Phil’s dad passed away.
People do realise this is about the 5th time he’s collapsed on stage, and that’s just the ones i’ve heard about, best was when he collapsed backstage, and landed face first on a glass ash tray
not bad.
