Roadrunner Records UK Closes
Saddening news broke yesterday evening that Roadrunner Records will be closing its UK offices. As of yet, there is no official statement from our good friends at the company, but a number of bands on the Roadrunner roster have responded with their thoughts:
“I wish I knew who or what to blame specifically, but Roadrunner records just fired some of their best employees,” commented Trivium frontman Matt Heafy via Twitter. “I don’t know if it’s corporate greed or it’s due to the fact that no one puts value in physical art and that piracy created a domino effect, But our friends who are being tossed away so quickly by the label are now out of jobs. These people helped bands get where they are today.”
“Of course I’ll be emotional when it has to do with people I love and care and respect for helping me,” he added, “The main point is that people need to remember,Internet aside-we are dealing with human beings. I feel for my friends.”
“Today is a sad day,” states Slipknot’s Clown via the band’s official Facebook. “It has been brought to my attention that many Roadrunner offices around the world have been closed permanently. This means to us, Slipknot, in my opinion that a lot of our very close friends and comrades will no longer be around to help the art and business known as the Slipknot family. You are in my thoughts and prayers now forever. I will always consider you close friends and I will make every attempt to stay in touch with as many of you as possible.”
“The RoadRunner people who handle us outside of the US have all been cool as fuck,” says Lamb Of God‘s Randy Blythe. “Today was terrible news with all the closings. The people who work at that label have always been supportive of LOG, even before we inked a deal with them. I hope they all find work soon!”
“RIP ROADRUNNER UK,” adds DevilDriver‘s Dez Fafara via Twitter. “THANKS FOR ALL THE HARD WORK AND MEMORIES!”
Cradle Of Filth frontman Dani Filth, whose band have also been on the Roadrunner roster, commented; “It feels like someone has stuck their fingers in our pie and pinched a great big slice of metal.”
“This is very saddening news, and our thoughts are with the remarkable staff there who we worked with every day,” says Metal Hammer editor Alexander Milas. “As a music fan, I can’t think of a label that’s been more central to the success of more bands in our world, and as someone who’s worked with them on a daily basis, I can say they’re simply the best in the business and true believers – their passion and drive set the bar. And it’s staggering to think how many bands they brought to the table: Sepultura, Soulfly, Type O Negative, Machine Head, Slipknot, Devildriver, Killswitch, Trivium, the list goes on. The bottom line is, this is a sad day for metal, and for a lot of very good people who worked their asses off for what they believed in. On behalf of everyone at Hammer, thank you so very fucking much. Horns up.”
The UK office’s closure comes as part of a number of Roadrunner outlets around the globe shutting down. Anyone with the tiniest knowledge of the business and of metal itself knows that Roadrunner have been a seminal force in bringing exposure to some of the greatest bands in history, with the likes of Sepultura, Fear Factory, Slipknot, Type O Negative, Lamb Of God, Trivium, Down and more finding their feet with the label, not to mention the signing of other legends like Megadeth, Korn and Slash in recent times.
Needless to say, we are all truly gutted by this news, and can only thank all our incredible friends at Roadrunner for their amazing work over the years, and wish them the absolute best of luck in their next steps. We know you’ll all land on your feet, and we can’t wait to see what you all get up to next.
