Scott Ian: “Corey Taylor was in Anthrax!”
Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian reveals to Metal Hammer that Slipknot/Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor was 100% part of Anthrax!
Scott Ian, holding a copy of the new issue of Metal Hammer, has spoken to the Metal Hammer podcast about how Corey Taylor was genuinely going to be a part of Anthrax on his downtime from Slipknot/Stone Sour, prior to new ‘thrax vocalist Dan Nelson joining the band.
““Corey Taylor was in Anthrax!,” Ian told us. “We just said “bummer, we don’t have John Bush” but it was pretty cool that we were going to have Corey Taylor on the record and for three months, it was actually happening. It was for real, it was not a joke.”
Come back to Metal Hammer this Friday to join Gill and Beez for the Metal Hammer podcast to hear Scott tell the full story of how the whole incident played out!
The new issue of Metal Hammer (on sale June 3rd) sees us going behind the masks to discover the insane story of Slipknot’s decade of destruction, plus all-new features with Killswitch Engage, DevilDriver, Steel Panther and Gallows, a free Battle Metal CD, a double-sided poster of Iron Maiden and Blooodstock and much, much more!
Check out our track-by-track guide to 4 of the brand new Anthrax tracks that will be included on the band’s forthcoming album, ‘Worship Music’!

I’m curious as to what exactly Scott means by “Corey Taylor was in Anthrax!”, was Corey thinking about quiting Slipknot or was it just a temporary fill-in situation? He goes on to say that he was cool to have Corey on the album and for three months (that would be a tour, I’m guessing) but I’m not sure that would have been a great move for Anthrax as a band. I’m a big fan of Slipknot and it would’ve been great to see what Corey would bring to the table but I have to say I’m on with Anthrax and it’s better that they’ve got a proper full-time member with them now. In any case, no way would Corey have quit ‘Knot to join Anthrax, it wouldn’t make any sense for his career.
Skumbo::
a while back Corey was rumoured to be doing the vocals on Anthrax’s album, as they didnt have a vocalist at the time. He apparantly was in the band for a few months, i not sure if they recorded anyhting or not with him, but yeah – he also was only doing whilst not busy with Slipknot or StoneSour, not leaving them =] .
i think thats what the story was anyway.
Slipknot sucks ass. So glad this did not happen. Would have killed Anthrax for me.
Corey was going to sing for Anthrax and obviously did so for three months to write and record for them but Roadrunner Records (Slipknot/Stone Sour’s label) stamped it all out as Corey has other committments within Slipknot and Stone Sour. I believe Corey wrote and recorded a few songs for Anthrax to use on this new album but didn’t join the band fulltime as was intended due to RR’s hissy fit.
(personally, Corey can front ANY band, he’s my favourite singer and I don’t care who he plays with. Slipknot are my favourite band and I don’t ever want to see them end…)
Holy, holy, holy crap!
That would have been Caught in a Mess, Meduseless, I Am the Laff, Taking the Music Back to the Stone Age…
Honestly, Slipknot would be kings if they’d only get rid of that guy.
OMG this issue is gonna be sick. i thought the last Battle Metal CD was awesome and cant wait for my ears to bleed with this one!! I Love MetalHammer
Looks like a great issue.
But I mean c’mon – another Maiden poster?
As much as I – and most the people who read your mag – love Maiden, enough is enough!
Just about every issue or every other issue there’s been a Somewhere Back In Time poster and I’ve got at least 3 or 4 now!
I knwo it probably makes sense what with their recent successful tour, but show some other bands some love poster wise!
I’ve got enough Maiden on my wall as it is!
COREY TAYLOR fronting Anthax would have been AWESOME!!! ANYTHING he puts his touch on always comes out FABULOUS! BUT, I’m glad they got someone else to front. COREY…You NEED to focus on your SOLO album now!!! Can’t wait, I LOVE YOU!!!
I know just about everybody is going to disagree with me but I think Corey Taylor is a better metal vocalist then Joey Balladonna. Joey is good, but is to melodic for metal let alone thrash metal.
YO,Studdman? You know your shit!!! ; ) And of course I AGREE with YOU!!! COREY TAYLORs voice is BAD ASS!!! And you know thisss! Yes, Joey has a good voice…BUT… COREY kicks ass!!!!!!!! He can do it ALL!!! I LOVE HIM!!! HE’S AWESOME! =) You know a great voice when you hear it!!!
Corey Taylor is the best metal vocalist of his generation (perhaps ever), irrespective of what you think of the bands he’s been in. His clean tones are supreme and his rough tones have more range and versatility than anyone elses. That’s just aural fact.
RIGHT-ON, Omerta!!! COREY TAYLOR………. YOU DA MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!KEEP UP THE GREAT VOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!=)
I would never listen to Anthrax again if he joined the band.
