Shawn Crahan: “I Hate Touring!”
The Clown makes his feelings known on hitting the road in the latest issue of Metal Hammer, on sale now!
Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan has spoken to Metal Hammer about how he hates touring, despite loving hitting the stage with the Des Moines noise terrorists.
“It’s simple: I hate touring,” says Clown. “I hate everything to do with it! I hate this fucking room that looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in twenty years, I hate the catering, I hate all the jackasses hanging around and all the kiss-ass, suck-dick, bullshit that goes with getting to do one thing, which is the only reason I do it…to play live! I play live because I have pain that is unidentifiable to anybody else but myself and the release comes through live performances.”
This is just one of a series of massive revelations as we go behind the masks of Slipknot in the latest issue of Metal Hammer! Get your hands on a copy of the new magazine for the full, unflinching story!
Slipknot headline the Saturday night of the Download festival next weekend.

I hope Clown quits after the 10 year mark that way we can have rid of his whinging and bullshit. Twat!
I hope he doesnt quit the band otherwise it wouldnt be the complete slipknot without him. But after reading this months issue, it really sounds like he doesnt want to be a part of slipknot anymore
Clown may whinge and moan but slipknot wouldn’t be slipknot without him plus give the guy a break with him just having to go though losing his mum!! You twat!!
I gotta say Hammer
I’m getting a bit sick of Clown. I know it makes me a douche, and god knows the guys got problems, but I mean, come on. Nobody feels sorry for someone who feels so sorry for themself.
I love Slipknot to bits, I’ve grown up listening to them, and I’m not out to attack him. I just think someone needs to tell him to get right the fuck over himself. My friends and I sat reading the interview and we couldn’t believe some of the stuff he was saying.
Granted, life on the road has gotta be tough, especially when you’re a father and husband to a seriously ill wife, and yeah, I do feel sorry for him for that. But it’s not like he’s even complaining about that.
In the interview he complains about there being barely any maggots left, about how nowadays people just turn up to see the big rock show.
Well, y’know what Clown?
It’s your own. Fucking. Fault.
As someone who thinks AHIG is easily the weakest of the ‘Knot’s albums, I have no sympathy with him for this.
Slipknot chose to make AHIG more commercial, less awesome and altogether a bit more wank than their previous efforts, so obviously you’re going to get a more mainstream audience coming to shows.
I apologise for the essay I just wrote, but this has been pissing me off since I read an interview with him like years ago, and I’ve needed to get it off my chest.
No doubt I’ll incite a fucking massive shitstorm of “SLIPKNOT RULZ!!!” and “SHUT THE FUCK UP, CLOWN IS AWESOME” comments.
He is awesome, Slipknot do rule. But I’ve wanted to say that for ages.
Again, apologies for wasting valuable webspace for this, but there you go.
Commence shitstorm
all clowns are bollocks – he just further proved it.
back in your clown car, big nose… and fuck off.
I certainly agree with you there Callum.
this guy kinda seems to hate everything.
some of the things ive seen been said by him have been a little contradicting on themselves
this whole slipknot love/hate aura is pretty gay.
why cant it just be A BAND. make album, play music for people, not so mysterious. yes, live performances are a way to get release. ok. we get that, everyone does. end of.
ive been able to see them many times, and it just not personal or exciting at all, way better to go see a great band in a small club.
Hey Callum. Im a big Slipknot fan and have been since…well, long before Iowa anyways, but i agree with a shitlot of what you just said, and disagree with others. Please dont get me wrong,I have massive repect for Slipknot as a band, a live act and as musicians and Shaun i think is integral to the band. However he is starting to come across as somone who is moaning and pissed off at everything for no reason.
I love the band (and although i agree AHIG isnt their best album by a long shot i still think ts brilliant) and im glad they have become so big and get a new following of fans. As a fan for those 10 years some of that interview feeled like a slap to the face, and not in a ‘maggot’ kinda way.
Still love him tho.
Totally agree man. Like I said, I’m not out to attack Clown, or Slipknot, or anyone.
I just think that sometimes people need brought back down to Earth.
Also, I think you know a friend of mine, but I’m not sure
Whereabouts you from?
They are a pretentious bunch of twats and it beats me how 9 so-called musicians only succeed in making a noise!!!! Say what you like you wont convince me they are the most over-rated twits ever-no wonder they dont show their faces.
heres an idea get clown to write the yrics for there next album he seems to be the only one that still has problems and can put proper emotions into the lyrics instead of preaching out to the world like corey has back to iowa corey was fucked up and you could tell and they made brilliant music now if you put shauns emotions into it hopefully it will have the anger of old days slipknot
also slipknot rule
I have to agree with a lot of your points Callum, especially about AHIG, there are a few great songs, Sulphur being a stand out one, but it does seem watered down compared to the rawness and pain of the first album that saw maggots born to the earth.
hopefully the rumours are true and they will play the first album all the way thorugh as part of their set @ Download.
I was disappointed that they didnt play Eyeless on the last tour, especially after I saw them twice, but to be honest i think it will be last time i`ll get to see them: unless their next album, if they do one, switches back to the rawness and metal of their first, which is unlikely but not impossible, and they need to get anger and passion in their music back and transform that to their performance……
Slipknot are my favourate band without a doubt, but it breaks my heart to hear him say stuff like that
He just sounds like whiney 16 year-old.
Their new album is not as power full as iowa or before, but i must say its better then Vol:3, they have gone to the more softer side of metal, but still are very away, if you dont evolve as musician then your not a musician, there are always new paths to follow, and staying at the same style of music is just the same shit over and over, and may seem awesome for fans, but really to keep on playing the same heavy stuff is kinda sickening. i love their self titled album, and also all hope is gone, i just think they need to make more of a mix between both.
and as to clown complaining, i get it, it would suck being away from your kids and family all the time.
Stay SIC maggots
That just sounds like the most whinny ass shit i’ve ever heard. No disrespect for slipknot mind but to whine about venues at this stage of your carreer is just asking to be called a bunch of bitches.
Should shawn be used to this by now?
I respect peoples desisions in life and if you love slipknot to the very core then you’d agree with him, All hope is Gone’ was a good record, better albums have been released though, Iowa still kills it for me.
Like many good artists (musical and other) he can be irritating, maudlin and hypocritical but without this attitude Slipknot wouldn’t be what it is.
i wood die whitout clown or any other of the nine gods
